This Week on TV – 2/8/09-2/14/09

Welcome to a new week of TV! This is a BUSY week! If you don’t believe me, check out Sunday! So let’s get to it, shall we? Jump with me to see this week’s schedule!

Sunday is the series premiere of Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory on MTV at 9/8c. After the success of Rob & Big, ingenious skateboarder Rob Dyrdek is ready to become the Willy Wonka of Skateboarding. The Fantasy Factory is a 25,000 square foot industrial-complex-turned-funhouse designed to expand the reaches of Rob’s skateboard empire, known as Dyrdek Enterprises. The heart of the Fantasy Factory is Rob’s office that sits atop the world’s first indoor concrete skate plaza — a place where anything Rob imagines can become reality. Rob continues to chase down his dreams in his own outlandish way, whether strapping on bouncy stilts to take on Lakers’ Lamar Odom in a game of one-on-one basketball(a potential investor for Rob’s co-owned restaurant), or enlisting longtime friend and skateboarding superstar Danny Way to help break the world’s land-speed record on a skateboard. Rob’s cousin Drama returns as Rob’s nave, beat-upon whipping boy and personal assistant. As Rob fills his new digs with zip-lines, foam pits, skate ramps, and a “T Rex” (a cross between the Batmobile and a Stormtrooper), Rob will also look to fellow action sports friends, including Travis Pastrana, Paul Rodriguez, Steve Berra, Ken Block and Danny Way, to help him on his journey to make as many fantasies as he can come true.

Tonight is also the series premiere of The CollegeHumor Show on MTV 9:30/8:30c. What happens when that “real world” our parents warned us about never quite comes to pass? This is a new scripted comedy series written by and starring the actual staff of When they’re not creating some of today’s most popular Internet comedy, the staffers are turning their workplace into a chaotic, not entirely mature, play land — with a functioning ball pit. Based in CH’s actual New York office, the show combines the energy and absurdity of their online videos with all-new office storylines, bringing all of the best things about the site to the big(ger) screen.

Also tonight is the series premiere of 1000 Ways to Die on Spike at 10/9c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 10:30/9:30c. It combines the science of living and the randomness of death with a dash of Darwinism. What actually happens when a rattlesnake’s venom enters the bloodstream? How do Nitrogen bubbles affect the body after long exposure under water then immediately to 2 miles up into the sky? These questions will be answered in glorious CGI effects. Forensic experts, pathologists, toxicologists, herpetologists, and other experts offer eloquent explanations of mortality.

The last series premiere tonight is How’s Your News? on MTV at 10:30/9:30c. First conceived at Camp Jabberwocky, the nation’s oldest sleepover camp for people with disabilities, How’s Your News? began as a series of short films with the members of the camp serving as reporters. Our 6 episode series has the adventurous spirit of Jackass, combined with the music and quirky comedy of The Monkees. In their customized tour bus, our team of reporters drive across America documenting their experiences, which includes everything from covering the red carpet at the Grammys and performing at the SXSW music festival, to learning to make cheese balls with Amy Sedaris in her apartment. During the course of the show, we learn more about this unique cast and their outrageous sense of humor through man on the street segments, musical performances, behind the scenes adventures and celebrity interviews.

Tonight is also the season premiere of HGTV Showdown on HGTV at 9/8c, the 2009 NFL Pro Bowl on NBC at 4:30/3:30c and The 51st Annual Grammy Awards on CBS at 8/7c.

Finally, tonight is the first part of two of the miniseries, XIII on NBC at 9/8c. It stars Val Kilmer, Stephen Dorff, Stephen McHattie and Jessalyn Gilsig (Heroes). The adrenaline-charged miniseries begins dramatically as the first female U.S. president is shot dead by a sniper during her Veterans Day speech. Three months later, a wounded man is found tattered in a forest with no memory of his identity. The only clue is a tattoo on his neck — “XIII.” Could his lightning-fast reflexes and killer instincts betray him as the presidential assassin that the U.S. is desperately searching for? Submerged in a far-reaching conspiracy, which threatens to overthrow the entire government, XIII’s identity becomes the key to unraveling a complex and dangerous secret that will shock and excite. From the first bullet, this gripping action-thriller will leave audiences gasping for more. Ted Atherton, John Bourgeois, Greg Bryk (ReGenesis), Lucinda Davis, and Caterina Murino also star.

At the very apex of his career, he’s facing up to 30 years of jail time for an arrest stemming from his earlier life. However, as part of a deal worked out between his lawyers and the federal government, if he completes an amazing 1000 hours of community service during the year ending this March, that sentence may be reduced. At 27, finding himself at the very high- and low-point of his adult life, he’s seeking redemption in helping others avoid the mistakes he made. In the new docu-series, cameras follow T.I.’s efforts to save himself by saving others. In order to communicate his message, he has to give each teenager a tough love lesson in life and show them the consequences of what could happen if they continue down the wrong path.

It is created & produced by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly etc) and stars Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica). Echo (Dushku) is an “Active”, a member of a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined to a secret facility known as the “Dollhouse”, Echo and the other Actives including Sierra (Dichen Lachman, Neighbours) and Victor (Enver Gjokaj, The Unit) carry out engagements assigned by Adelle (Olivia Williams, X-Men: The Last Stand, Rushmore), one of the Dollhouse leaders. The engagements cater to the wealthy, powerful and connected, and require the Actives to immerse themselves in all manner of scenarios romantic, criminal, uplifting, dangerous, comical and the occasional “pro bono” good deed. After each scenario, Echo, always under the watchful eye of her handler Boyd (Harry Lennix, Commander in Chief, 24), returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings and experiences are erased by Topher (Fran Kranz, Welcome to the Captain), the Dollhouse’s genius programmer. Echo enters the next scenario with no memory of before. Or does she? As the series progresses, FBI Agent :Paul Smith (Penikett) pieces together clues that lead him closer to the Dollhouse, while Echo stops forgetting, her memories begin to return and she slowly pieces together her mysterious past. DOLLHOUSE revolves around Echo’s blossoming self-awareness and her desire to discover her true identity.
