This Week on TV – 7/12/09-7/18/09

Welcome to a new week of TV! There is a lot on this week, including the premieres of Drop Dead Diva & Dark Blue and the return of a fan favorite, Dirty Sexy Money. So let’s get to it! Jump with me to view this week’s schedule!

Sunday is a new episode of Expedition Africa on the History Channel at 10/9c, followed by the season finale at 10:30/9:30c.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Drop Dead Diva on Lifetime at 9/8c. The one-hour, comedic drama tells the story of a shallow model-in-training who dies in a sudden accident only to find her soul resurfacing in the body of a brilliant, plus-size and recently deceased attorney. Television newcomer and stage actress Brooke Elliott (Wicked, Taboo) stars alongside Margaret Cho (Notorious C.H.O.), Jackson Hurst (The Tree of Life), Kate Levering (Cashmere Mafia), April Bowlby (Two and a Half Men), Josh Stamberg (Lie to Me), Brooke D’Orsay (How I Met Your Mother) and Ben Feldman (The Perfect Man).

Finally, tonight is the 2-hour part 1 of a 2-part miniseries called Meteor on NBC at 9/8c. Two massive rocks, tumbling debris older than the solar system itself, collide in space. The course has been altered. The target is Earth. In a remote observatory, Dr. Lehman (Emmy winner Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future), discovers a meteor approximately three times the size of Mount Everest barreling its way towards Earth. His devoted young assistant Imogene O’Neill (Marla Sokoloff, The Practice) feverishly types in the coordinates only to find the previously identified meteor named Kassandra is headed their way. It’s only the beginning of their troubles as showers of smaller meteorites begin to lay waste to major cities around the globe. The impending disaster brings out the best and the worst sides in people as they cope by either lending a helping hand or taking advantage of the situation. In a small California town, a Police Chief (Golden Globe Nominee Stacy Keach, Prison Break) struggles to calm a panicky group of citizens. Miles away, his son Jack, a detective (Golden Globe nominee Billy Campbell, Once and Again), finds himself caught in the middle of the most difficult arrest of his career with the ill-timed transfer of a very dangerous psychopath named Stark (Michael Rooker, JFK). Then there’s the skeptical Dr. Chetwyn (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Jason Alexander, Seinfeld) who may be the only chance Lehman and O’Neill have to get their findings to the proper authorities in time to deflect Kassandra.

Wednesday is the season premiere of Leverage on TNT at 9/8c.

Following that is the series premiere of Dark Blue on TNT at 10/9c. This fast-paced, undercover police drama from prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Without a Trace) stars Golden Globe winner Dylan McDermott (The Practice, TNT’s The Grid), Logan Marshall-Green (The O.C.), Omari Hardwick (TNT’s Saved) and Nicki Aycox (Supernatural). The series follows the exploits of a crack undercover team of police officers so covert, many of their own colleagues don’t even know they are involved. Leading the group is Carter Shaw (McDermott), a deeply wounded character who has lost his wife and much of his former life as he struggles to bring down bad guys through complex undercover assignments. His team includes Ty Curtis (Hardwick), a recently married cop who struggles with personal relationships he has developed while undercover; Dean Bendis (Marshall-Green), a shoot-from-the-hip officer whose activities make fellow team members wonder if he has gone over to the bad side; and Jaimie Allen (Aycox), a green patrol cop brought in because of her excellent skill in lying and a shady past.

Another series premiere tonight is Michael & Michael Have Issues on Comedy Central at 10:30/9:30c. BFF’s or worst enemies? Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter banter and bicker in this new show. It puts a new twist on narrative and sketch comedies that features the long-time comedic partners as the hosts of their own fictitious sketch show. In the seven episode series, sketches will be interspersed throughout the narrative thread of each episode. Behind-the-scenes of the show-within-a-show, viewers will get a first hand look at issues, both big (in an attempt to broaden their appeal, the guys turn their show into a frat house spectacle) and small (the two Michaels fight over the approval of a teenage intern writing an article about them for his high school newspaper) that the two misguided stars wrestle with as they confront their own issues of insecurity and jealousy as each attempts to undermine the other. Other issues in the series include roommate rivalry when the “Michaels” secure a college gig, playing Cupid for an unlucky-in-love co-worker and what birthday gift to give the boss who has everything.

Saturday is the season premiere of The Bill Engvall Show on TBS at 9/8c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 9:30/8:30c. I really enjoy this show. It’s far from my favorite, but for the most part, it’s a nice, clean, funny show that I don’t have to put away until my 11-year-old goes to bed so he doesn’t hear or see something innappropriate.

Tonight is also the return of Dirty Sexy Money from hiatus on ABC at 10/9c.

Finally, there is a 1-hour special on Comedy Central tonight at 11/10c, John Heffron: Middle Class Funny. John won Last Comic Standing a few years ago and I really, really love him. So I can’t wait for this one! Check it out and let me know what you think. I doubt you’ll be disappointed!
