This Week on TV – 8/2/09-8/8/09

Welcome to a new week of TV! Another busy week this week. Sunday, especially, seems incredibly packed with 3 season finales, 2 series premieres, 5 specials PLUS 20 other new episodes! That’s crazy, people! Luckily for me, I only have 9 things I need to watch/record. *gulp* Let’s get to it and see what days are your busiest! Jump with me to view this week’s schedule!

Sunday is the 120-minute season finale of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? on BBC America at 8/7c, followed by the 1-hour ‘When Joseph Met Maria’ Special at 10/9c.

Tonight is also the season finale of The Next Food Network Star on Food Network at 9/8c and the 1-hour season finale of Kendra on E! at 10/9c.

There are 2 series premieres tonight. First up is the 2-hour series premiere of Defying Gravity on ABC at 9/8c. This sexy, provocative space thriller is set in the very near future against the background of our solar system, in which eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering eight billion miles. Hurtling into the vast challenge of infinite space, the eight astronauts and the ground personnel who support them are on a mission that has a powerful and awesome mystery at its core. The intimate and interconnected relationships among the astronauts and the ground crew, as well as their past actions, have a strangely karmic effect on the present. Episodes are divided between the present, as the Antares travels towards Venus, and the past, with flashbacks to earlier years when the astronauts were in the grueling selection and training process. It stars Andrew Airlie (Reaper, Saved), Christina Cox (Blood Ties, Nikki & Nora), Karen Leblanc (Runaway), Laura Harris (Women’s Murder Club, Dead Like Me), Malik Yoba (Raines, Thief) & Ron Livingston (Standoff).

Tonight’s second series premiere is Megan Wants a Millionaire on VH1 at 9/8c. Blonde bombshell and “celebreality” vixen, Megan Hauserman is looking for love — but not with any average Joe. Megan has her eye, mind and heart set on one type of man… a millionaire! Unfortunately, Megan’s had her heart broken by Bret Michaels in Rock of Love 2 and lost out on the million dollar check in I Love Money. But now she’s back with vengeance to find both love and money with the goal of becoming the ultimate trophy wife. This summer, Megan will put 18 millionaires to the test as they compete for her affection.

There are 4 specials tonight. First up is the 1-hour special on ABC at 8/7c called Ty’s Great British Adventure, starring Ty Pennington from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. What happens when you send America’s most energetic and enthusiastic makeover king to a sleepy village in England to help revamp the historic town park? For Ty, the opportunity to mobilize an entire community was very enticing, but the challenges were greater than he’s ever faced a village he’d never heard of full of people he’d never met, all of whom are expecting him to pull off a miracle. With his passport in hand and his reputation on the line, Ty crossed the Atlantic and embarked on the journey to the seaside town of Portreath in southwest England.

The second special is Legally Blondes on ABC Family at 8/7c. This is the third and newest installment of the Legally Blonde franchise. In this movie, Reese Witherspoon is the producer and according to ABC Family, she passes the blonde-baton to British twin sisters Becky and Milly Rosso, who play Elle’s cousins, Izzy and Annie Woods. The Rosso twins are most recognizable from The Suite Life of Zack & Cody on the Disney Channel. Leading into the premiere of this special will be the first two movies, with Legally Blonde at 4/3c and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde at 6/5c.

The third is Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV at 9/8c with a 1-hour ‘Top 10 Performances of All Time’ special.

Finally, the fourth special is the 2-hour part 2 of the 2-part miniseries The Storm on NBC at 9/8c.

From the inventor of the BillyBob Teeth who grew up dirt poor to the pioneer of the Infomercial who peddles goodies like Obama coins and “Mr. Mardi Gras” who still lives in the same house as when he came into his riches to a Telecommunications tycoon who built an empire by starting out going door to door selling cordless phones and takes Joan on a tour of the place he now calls home the Versace Mansion, all of these millionaires made their money in the most unexpected and interesting ways.
