This Week on TV – 2/28/10-3/6/10

Welcome to a new week of TV! This is a much busier week on TV than it has been lately, because the Olympics are finally over. There is the series premeire of Parenthood (YES!), the season finale of Burn Notice (NO!) and much more. So check it out! Jump with me to view this week’s schedule!

Sunday

Sunday is a special preview, but really the series premiere, of The Marriage Ref on NBC at 10:30/9:30c. Jerry Seinfeld is back and in the producer’s chair for a funny and revealing comedy panel series about the unpredictable and hilarious institution commonly known as marriage. Seinfeld describes it as “a comedy about situations in reality.” Married life takes center stage as disputes between real-life couples are revealed, examined — and ultimately judged. For the first time, audiences will be able to look at these fights, analyze them and declare a winner. These marital tiffs will run the gamut of disagreements — quirky, funny, relatable — all with the signature Seinfeld tone. At the center of the action and making “the call,” is popular comedian Tom Papa (The Informant!, The New Adventures of Old Christine). Papa will serve as the actual Marriage Ref and will have the final say in determining the victor of each spat. Papa was personally chosen by Seinfeld for this role. For the past eight years, Papa has been on tour with Seinfeld. The couples that present their problems will be given a call by the Ref, just like in sports. Wife is right, husband is wrong. Wife wins the prize. Advising and influencing the Ref’s decision will be a rotating panel of “experts” comprised of top celebrities, comedians and sports stars who will weigh in and offer their own wit, wisdom and unique opinions.

Tuesday

Tuesday is the series premiere of 2 shows. First up is the premiere of Parenthood on NBC at 10/9c. The show is inspired by the box-office hit of the same name. Sarah Braverman (Lauren Graham, Gilmore Girls), a financially strapped single mother, is packing up her Fresno apartment and uprooting her two inconvenienced kids, Amber (Mae Whitman, In Treatment) and Drew (Miles Heizer, ER), to make a big move back home to Berkeley to be closer to her family. On the home front, Sarah is greeted by her larger-than-life, headstrong father, Zeek (Craig T. Nelson, Family Stone, Coach), and pillar-of-strength mother, Camille (Bonnie Bedelia), who are privately dealing with their own marital issues. Meanwhile, Sarah’s sister and complete antithesis, Julia (Erika Christensen, Traffic) is a successful corporate attorney trying to juggle work and motherhood, alongside her stay-at-home husband, Joel (Sam Jaeger, Eli Stone). Commitment-phobe Crosby (Dax Shepard, Baby Mama), Sarah’s younger brother, must suddenly contend with accepting adult responsibility when an old flame Jasmine (Joy Bryant Antwone Fisher) shows up unexpectedly and he must re-evaluate his priorities. However, it’s Adam (Peter Krause, Six Feet Under), the oldest Braverman sibling, who must relinquish his preconceived expectations about what constitutes a “normal” family when he, his wife Kristina (Monica Potter, Trust Me) and teenage daughter, Haddie (Sarah Ramos, American Dreams), learn that their eccentric son and Haddie’s little brother, Max (Max Burkholder, Brother and Sisters), is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Although each sibling and family has its own share of life to grapple with, perhaps this reunion is the push they need to help each other pick up the pieces and focus on the everyday challenges that families face while raising children and starting over.

It’s also the series premiere of Madman of the Sea on Animal Planet at 10/9c. While most people’s aspirations are grounded firmly on land, Matt Watson’s dreams are purely of the sea. Since childhood, the water has been his true home. At only the age of seven, Matt became the skipper of his own dinghy, eventually becoming the captain of his own commercial fishing vessel while still in his teens. Today, Matt is dubbed the “fish whisperer” by his peers for his ability to lure the biggest, fastest, baddest sea creatures that lurk beneath the surface. He feeds off adrenaline and travels the uncharted seas looking for that next great catch, and he’s willing to do anything to find it. Matt completes such extraordinary stunts as jumping from a hovering helicopter into the ocean to wrestle a giant marlin and becoming an instant Internet video sensation, faking his own death by shark attack and even capturing a fierce great white shark with only a hand line. And if the stunts aren’t deadly enough Matt and his team risk life and limb to get the action on film, up close and under the water. The six-part series takes the best footage from his recent adventures shown Down Under and packages them for an American audience.

It’s also the season premiere of Southland on TNT at 10/9c.

Finally, there’s a 1-hour ‘The Winners’ Story’ special for Last Restaurant Standing on BBC America at 9/8c.

Mia Wasikowska (In Treatment) is one of the guests on the Late Show with David Letterman, on CBS at 11:35/10:35c.
