I had the honour of interviewing the lovely, Joelle Carter, who plays Ava Crowder on the new FX drama, Justified, in a one-on-one phone interview. So this time ALL the questions are mine 😀 . Joelle has been in many films , such as High Fidelity and American Pie 2. As well as TV shows like Wonderland and CSI: Miami. If you haven’t had the chance to watch Justified yet you don’t know what you are missing, it’s FAB-U-LOUS!
Justified is focused on Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). Marshal Givens, is as old school as one can get these days with a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, and carrying his weapon in his side holster. He only shoots when he has too, and he shoots to kill because he believes that’s the purpose of a gun. After a shooting in Miami, where his actions drew too much attention from his superiors, he was sent to his home town in Kentucky to work as a Marshal there.
Kentucky holds a lot of history for Raylan, and he’ll interact with a few people from his past, including Ava Crowder (Joelle Carter), who was the high school cheerleader he had a crush on as a young man. The sexual tension between these two now is amazing, and it makes for both serious and comical moments.
There are some inspiring talents behind the screen as well with the show written/produced by Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty), the great crime novelist, and produced by Graham Yost (Boomtown), Michael Dinner (Sons of Anarchy, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (Kidnapped). This show will keep you both on the edge of your seat with the suspense and laughing at the characters. I believe this is one of the best new shows in a while so don’t miss it, Tuesday nights at 10 pm on FX.
Now that we have some background on the show, let’s get to the fun part… the interview.
First let me say that the show is wonderful, Ava is a great character. What drew you to this role?
“That Ava is great. *laughs* She’s sweet, sassy, southern and unpredictable.”
In what ways are you like Ava?
“We both have Southern flavour. It’s nice to be able to use my own accent. I’m also a bit unpredictable, and we both have an interesting core, hid behind our exterior.”
Can you give us some hints about where the relationship with Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) and Ava is going?
“Lots of good journeys. We’re still going to see lots of flirtatious, sexual tension. We go somewhere, then we go somewhere else and then somewhere else again. I don’t want to give too much away.”
[Note from Me: I love Raylan and Ava together, the sexual tension is explosive.]
Speaking of sexual tension, the chemistry between you and Timothy is amazing, was it like that immediately or did you have to work at it?
“It was immediate. We just instant chemistry.”
Have you ever had to fake chemistry with an actor?
“Yes. *laughs* My acting teacher always told me to find something you love about that person. Maybe it’s their nose, you love their nose, it’s the best nose. You just have to focus on that, because you’re supposed to appear in love with that person. That’s when the hard acting starts.”
[Note from Me: I was trying so hard not to crack up laughing because of the nose comment, so cute and funny.]
What’s been your favorite scene so far?
“It’s actually from the pilot, where Raylan comes to Ava’s door and while it’s for a serious reason, they are so playful. The two are so connected and familiar. “
[Note from me: That was a wonderful scene, I couldn’t stop watching these two actors together are intense. Joelle’s talent and experience come through in this role and make it a pleasure to watch.]
What’s the mood on set like?
“Very relaxed. Tim is a great leader. I for one felt like they let us play on set and just relax.”
If you could tell people why they should watch this show, what would you say?
“It’s gritty, and has a different flavour. It’s set in Kentucky which gives it a different feel and it has really meaty characters that people can love.”
You’ve acted in both films and television shows, is there one you prefer doing?
“I really enjoyed filming this show because it’s been more of a movie feeling on set. It’s also great that FX is so loyal and creative. But overall there is nothing like film, because you get more time with the characters, it’s more of what you studied to do. TV is a marathon.”
Can you tell us a bit about your new movie, To Be Friends? When will it be released and what’s it about?
“It’s about friends and their journey. More of an art house film, with 2 characters. Todd Stashwick (Heroes) plays my friend and my character helps him embrace life. Look for it at film festivals in the future.”
Any shows that you’d like to guest star on that you haven’t already?
“I think Breaking Bad. Anything on HBO or FX. I also think that Modern Family would be a fun show to work on.”
[Note from Me: Oh my goodness, I could totally see her on something like True Blood or maybe a cousin for Claire (Julie Bowen) on Modern Family, she’d be fantastic.]
Could you share one interesting fact about yourself with the readers?
“Interesting…hmm. I love toasted bagels with peanut butter and chocolate, with apple sauce to dip in.”
[Note from Me: She had me until the applesauce. LOL.]
What interests you besides acting?
“My husband. Bike riding with my husband, he introduced me to it, and we love it. He’s an avid Lance Armstrong fan. Also our Golden Retriever.”
That’s it for the interview, it was enjoyable to do and I hope you enjoy reading it. Check out the video below and don’t miss Justified , Tuesdays at 10 pm on FX.
