TV News – 7/8/10

Instead of a regular news post I opted to talk about the big news of the day, i.e. the Emmys. Today the Emmy nominations were announced and there were a few surprises. I was pleased with some, excited about others, and upset over others. Check out my thoughts and please feel free to comment below with yours.

I’ll go by category and tell you what I’m happy about and who I think is missing.

Outstanding Drama:

Breaking Bad
Mad Men
True Blood
The Good Wife

My Thoughts: I love that True Blood and Lost made the category. For once, I actually think everyone in the group deserves to be there. Would have been nice to see Friday Night Lights there too.

Outstanding Actress in a Drama:

Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Mariska Hargitay (Special Victims Unit)
Glenn Close (Damages)
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
January Jones (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)

My Thoughts: I was thrilled that Connie Britton got a nod for Friday Night Lights, she deserves it. I was also pleased with Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife and Glenn Close for Damages. I thought that the category was well balanced and I really don’t have any complaints about it. I just hope Connie Britton wins.

Outstanding Actor in a Drama:

Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Matthew Fox (Lost)

My Thoughts: I’m so happy to see Matthew Fox nominated for Lost, it was much deserved. I also thought that Kyle Chandler being nominated for Friday Night Lights was fabulous and made the whole category great. My only qualm is where is the love for Timothy Olyphant from Justified? He deserves it just as much as the others.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama:

John Slattery (Mad Men)
Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Martin Short (Damages)
Terry O’Quinn (Lost)
Michael Emerson (Lost)
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)

My Thoughts: Martin Short really? I think if anyone should have gotten a nomination from Damages it should have been Tate Donovan, his portrayal of Tom Shayes was flawless. I was also wondering where Jorge Garcia’s nomination was? He deserved it for Lost.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama:

Sharon Gless (Burn Notice)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Rose Byrne (Damages)
Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men)

My Thoughts: I was shocked to see Sharon Gless in the category, but equally pleased. Christine Baranski was a good nomination as well. Where was Regina King for Southland? She deserves it too.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama:

Beau Bridges (The Closer)
Ted Danson (Damages)
John Lithgow (Dexter)
Alan Cumming (The Good Wife)
Dylan Baker (The Good Wife)
Robert Morse (Mad Men)
Gregory Itzin (24)

My Thoughts: In my opinion the category belongs to John Lithgow, he was amazing in Dexter and made me start watching again.

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama:

Mary Kay Place (Big Love)
Sissy Spacek (Big Love)
Shirley Jones (The Cleaner)
Lily Tomlin (Damages)
Ann-Margret (Law & Order: SVU)
Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost)

My thoughts: I can’t really think of anyone at the moment who’s absolutely missing, but I love that Elizabeth Mitchell got a nod.

Outstanding Comedy:

Modern Family
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Nurse Jackie
30 Rock
The Office

My Thoughts: I am thrilled with the nominees, except I feel like The Big Bang Theory and Community deserved nods. As did Cougar Town, Ugly Betty and Chuck. That aside, hello Glee! Way to go!

Outstanding Actress in a Comedy:

Lea Michele (Glee)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Toni Collette (The United States of Tara)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)

My thoughts: That’s a huge honor for Lea Michele, especially in the first season. As much as I love Glee I don’t think she should win the category, my vote is for Toni Collette.

Outstanding Actor in a Comedy:

Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Matthew Morrison (Glee)
Steve Carell (The Office)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Tony Shalhoub (Monk)

My Thoughts: Tony Shalhoub? Give me a break. 😉 So happy about Jim Parsons and I hope he wins it. Congrats to Matthew Morrison for his nomination, but frankly he’s not as deserving as Parsons or Larry David.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy:

Chris Colfer (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
Ty Burell (Modern Family)

My thoughts: How awesome is it that Chris Colfer got a nomination? He deserved it more than anyone on the show, he had some intense story lines and I’m so impressed with him. That said, the question is, ‘Where’s Ed O’Neal’s nomination?’. He deserves one so much more than Jon Cryer. So sorry for him.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy:

Jane Lynch (Glee)
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)
Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men)

My Thoughts: The award should go to Jane Lynch, but the category was missing some love for Ugly Betty.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series:

Mike O’Malley (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (Glee)
Fred Willard (Modern Family)
Eli Wallach (Nurse Jackie)
Jon Hamm (30 Rock)
Will Arnett (30 Rock)

My thoughts: Mike O’Malley deserves this, he was fabulous this season on Glee and his story line was fierce.

Outstanding Reality Show Host:

Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race)
Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars)
Heidi Klum (Project Runway)
Jeff Probst (Survivor)

My Thoughts: My vote goes to Phil from The Amazing Race.

Outstanding Reality Show Competition:

Project Runway
Top Chef
The Amazing Race
Dancing with the Stars
American Idol

My thoughts: My vote goes to either Top Chef or The Amazing Race.

Outstanding Reality Program:

Antiques Roadshow
Dirty Jobs
Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List
Undercover Boss

My thoughts: I’m going to go with Jamie Oliver for the win, because he’s actually trying to change the world. Good on him.

Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series:

The Colbert Report
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live
The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien

My Thoughts: Conan deserves this after all the crap NBC put him through.

Miniseries or Movie:

The Pacific
Return to Cranford

My Thoughts: The Pacific for the win.

Outstanding TV Movie:

Endgame (PBS)
Georgia O’Keeffe (Lifetime)
Moonshot (History)
The Special Relationship (HBO)
Temple Grandin (HBO)
You Don’t Know Jack(HBO)

My Thoughts: I haven’t actually seen any of these yet but I’m hoping to before the actual Emmy night.

That’s all for the nominations for now, but be sure to tune in to the Emmy show on August 29th on NBC.
