If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/6/11

(From Jim:) Was it really just last week, I had downtime, was sleeping in, watching TV for myself and not work, and actually reading a book?? Well, it seems like that was a hundred years ago, because this week kicked off the TCAs. The Television Critics Association happens in January and July in Los Angeles, and all the networks (cable and broadcast) trot out their new shows, talent and hold panels, receptions and mixers for journalists like myself to mingle and chat (with digital recorder in hand in case any scoops come up!). Yesterday, I sat at a panel for TV Land’s Hot In Cleveland and it’s just a WOW moment every time you see Betty White. Amazing. I’ll be tweeting throughout today on Turner’s upcoming offerings as well as the OWN Network (yes, Oprah will be in da house!). But once I finish my day, I’ll be watching this…

Remember that really bad shooting over at Seattle Grace last Spring during Grey’s Anatomy’s season finale? Well, after a ho-hum sixth season, that shoot-out must have woken up the writers, because season 7 has been back to great form of interesting cases, lots of breakups, makeups, and overall great drama. The cast is clicking together like never before. While I wasn’t excited to have to see Cristina (Sandra Oh) go through her post-traumatic stress disorder by tending bar and then going on a fishing trip with Derek (Patrick Dempsey), the writing was sharp and fresh and the scenes were perfectly crafted.

In tonight’s episode, a shooting at a school finally snaps Cristina out of her funk for good and gets her back where she belongs – the operating room. I strongly suggest if you’ve let Grey’s slip over the last year or two, quickly return and watch some great TV.

It was hard for me to pick tonight, because there are so many great shows to choose from! I can eliminate Megan’s & Lisa’s choices–although I highly recommend you watch those, too–and tell you if you’re into hilarious fun, don’t miss the season premiere of Wipeout on ABC, but it really just comes down to a show that has been really really great this season. I’ve been a fan of The Mentalist since Day One, and it continues to make me glad I watch each week.

On tonight’s episode, Jane and the CBI step into the world of professional mixed martial arts when a woman with ties to one of the fighters is found dead at a match; LaRoche focuses his investigation on Rigsby, who in turn asks Cho for a huge favor.

Seeing as it earned the top spot in my top ten countdown, my pick for tonight is an all new episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I simply cannot get enough of this drama these days. Whether it’s watching Cristina try to fight her way back from the edge, or the emotional rollercoaster that is the Callie/Arizona relationship, I’m always glued to my TV.

On tonight’s episode, a mass shooting at a nearby college reopens some not-so-old wounds at the hospital, and Arizona returns to a welcome that’s less than warm.

It’s bound to be a fabulous episode filled with laughs and tears, so tune into ABC at 9/8c to see how it all plays out. Learn where to find episodes online of Grey’s Anatomy @ Clicker.

Lisa’s Choice

“…It all started with the big bang!” And it continues to resound with one as well. Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, and Howard are the geek best friends you can’t help but tune in to weekly. Add in the adorability, and gullability, of Penny and you’ve got a whole cast and show full of funny! The writing is smart, unique, charming, and very dead on with its pop culture references. If the writers can keep going strong with this golden goose, we viewers will be in pure heaven!

On tonight’s episode of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard and Sheldon’s friendship gets tested and becomes strained when the two fight over an idea for a smartphone application.

Catch an all new episode on CBS at 8/7c! Learn where to find episodes online of The Big Bang Theory @ Clicker.
