If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/19/11

This is my 2nd busiest night of TV this week, and it truly is crazy again. Therefore, we’re giving you extra again. I’m giving you 2 choices, Megan is giving you 2, and Lisa & Jason will also be chiming in with their recommendations. No need for applause. We’re generous like that. 😉

Jenny’s Choice #1

While I wish I could recommend my wonderful Criminal Minds tonight (Watch! It’s a big episode for Reid!), or the new Restaurant Impossible with Robert Irvine on Food Network, or the fantastic comedy block on ABC, I can’t. My first choice? The season premiere of TV Land’s original, Hot in Cleveland. The ladies on this series are brilliantly funny, including the incomparable Betty White, who is as funny now as she was in Golden Girls years ago. This is a fun little comedy, with some great storylines, great chemistry between the cast, and I love that it comes from TV Land, a network not known for its original shows. On last season’s finale, Elka was arrested for having stolen goods in her cellar.

On tonight’s season premiere, the ladies try to bail Elka out of jail; the INS delivers a letter to Joy, who has a shocking encounter with one of her neighbors, Melanie dates a policeman who makes a negative impression on her friends; Victoria’s financial worth plummets.

Don’t miss tonight’s season premiere on TV Land at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Hot in Cleveland @ Clicker.

Megan’s Choice

It’s that time of year again, when young hopeful singers everywhere flock to be judged. I’m talking about American Idol. Tonight is the season premiere of the hit show, but it’s going to look a little different. Simon is gone, and so is Kara. In their places, we have Steven Tyler (lead singer of Aerosmith) and Jennifer Lopez.

Jenny has seen select auditions, and she said not only are there some fantastic singers headed our way, but the new judges do a great job! Much better than she’d anticipated.

Tune into FOX tonight at 8/7c to see the audition process begin, and see how you feel about the new judges. Learn where to find episodes online of American Idol @ Clicker.

Lisa’s Choice

One of the funniest shows on TV that isn’t getting the attention that it deserves is The Middle. Patricia Heaton was a hit in Everybody Loves Raymond, and she would have a hit with this one, too, if the viewership was there. There is a charm and uniqueness to the show that really should be known by many. This family driven show about an offbeat clan will keep you in stitches if you just give it a chance. Frankie does her best to try to keep her head above water, while working and trying to take care of her family. Frankie’s husband Mike just wants to be left alone. Daughter Sue can’t catch a break, son Brick is more than a little odd, and their brother Axl is your typical jock with one thing on the brain: himself! Break the mold and give yourself the chance to love this wonderful show!

Tonight, in preparation for the upcoming Super Bowl, Brick decides to some research on football, and Mr. Ehlert asks Frankie to be his guest at a managerial seminar.

Jason’s Choice

It’s nice to have a midweek break, and that’s what Wednesday is for me. After those last couple nights of TV, I could use a night to catch up. Yet, there are a handful of shows worth checking out, and no, the season premiere of American Idol on FOX isn’t one of them. That short list consists of Modern Family, Cougar Town and Off the Map on ABC, and Criminal Minds and Blue Bloods on CBS. But don’t worry, the craziness returns tomorrow night.

Modern Family is probably the best overall show on the night, but my pick is Cougar Town. They are both consistently funny, but I’d want to hangout with the Cougar Town crew and play some Penny Can. On tonight’s episode, while the guys argue that men are loyal friends and women will abandon their pals at the drop of a hat, one thing is certain — everyone has each other’s backs in the cul-de-sac crew. Although Laurie may be the worst houseguest ever, Jules is there for her when she needs a place to stay; Laurie helps Jules to realize she doesn’t need to change for others; and when Bobby is jealous that Travis has gone to Grayson for advice, Grayson comes through for his buddy.

Cougar Town plays tonight on ABC at 9:31/8:31c. Learn where to find episodes online of Cougar Town @ Clicker.

Megan’s Choice #2

Well, seeing as tonight is full of fabulous television, Jenny and I decided that we’d bend the rules for today. My second choice for tonight is Blue Bloods. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon for this show yet, then you are missing out. Not only is it a great new twist on a police drama, but the family drama that is involved is always exciting and interesting. We also can’t forget the adorable Donnie Wahlberg (New Kids on the Block), who does a great job of being a tough NY detective.

On tonight’s episode, Danny and Jackie investigate the murder of a high-end escort after the victim’s body is found in a river. Meanwhile, Frank reopens a cold case from 25 years ago when a missing boy’s remains are discovered.

Tune into CBS tonight at 10/9c and fall in love with this new drama like we have. Learn where to find episodes online of Blue Bloods @ Clicker.

Jenny’s Choice #2

My second choice tonight is the series premiere of Retired at 35 on TV Land. When I first saw the title, I thought, “Oh no, a silly reality show.” Then I read about it, and no, it’s a new comedy from the same network that brought us last season’s hit, Hot in Cleveland. What? That’s not enough of a recommendation to get you to at least give this one a chance? How about this? George Segal (Just Shoot Me, Murphy’s Law) stars as David’s father, Alan, and Jessica Walter (Arrested Development) stars as Elaine, David’s mother. That’s an impressive set of parents, is it not??

The show stars newbie Johnathan McClain as David, a man who leaves his executive job in New York to join his parents in their Florida retirement community. The move is meant to give him a new outlook on life, but the situation becomes more complicated when his mother decides to leave his father.
