If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/20/11

Holy crap, it’s cold! We got hit with another bout of snow yesterday, and by 5:00, they had cancelled school for today. I’m inside, and I can’t stop shivering! What will warm me up? Well, a blanket or the heater, but new TV does a lot, too. 😉 It’s a pretty busy night tonight, with lots of great stuff on. What do we think you should watch? Check it out now!

Since Megan is doing USA’s new drama, and Lisa is doing my favorite comedy on TV right now, (I could have picked NBC’s new comedy, Perfect Couples, but I’ve not heard much about it, and I’m not sure I trust a brand new comedy on NBC without seeing it myself first!), my choice is one I adore and I think more people would like if they gave it a chance. The Mentalist from CBS is a great drama with some fantastic moments of amusement. Aussie Simon Baker plays a brilliant Patrick Jane, who is honestly one of my favorite characters on TV. He never fails to entertain.

On tonight’s episode, Jane and the CBI team butt heads with a scientific criminal profilers in efforts of solving a double murder. Both Jane and the profiler compete to try to prove to each other that their methods are far more superior than their mutual counterpart in solving the case.

Well, the profiler will be no Derek Morgan, but it still should make for a great episode! Don’t miss it tonight on CBS at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of The Mentalist @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’m going to go with a new show that’s premiering on the USA network. Fairly Legal is a show that focuses on Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi, Life) and her journey through her complicated life. Kate used to be a lawyer, but after realizing that the law isn’t always fair, she decided that she wanted to find a way to make a case end in a win-win instead of always having a loser, so she became a mediator. Sounds like your average legal show? It’s not. Take my excellent word for it and know that it’s worth watching. I’ve seen the pilot, and I can honestly tell you that it’s worth watching.

On tonight’s episode, after the sudden death of her father, San Francisco mediator Kate Reed must work with her stepmother (Virginia Williams) – who is the same age – to keep his firm alive by resolving a dispute between a clothing magnate (guest-star Ken Howard) and his son (guest-star Patrick Gilmore – Stargate Universe), who is due to inherit the business, and hiding a dark personal secret which could ruin an innocent boy’s life.

Tune in to USA at 10/9c for the 75-minute premiere. Learn where to find episodes online of Fairly Legal @ Clicker.

Jason’s Choice

With Grey’s Anatomy on ABC taking a break this week with a repeat episode, and The Vampire Diaries on The CW not back with new episodes until next week, I would’ve normally ended up on Community as my top pick on the night. It returns with new episodes, along with the rest of NBC’s new three-hour comedy block. So, what’s my pick tonight?

Well, Royal Pains on USA Network returns to resume its second season tonight with a very fun episode, but alas, it’s not it. The new series Fairly Legal premieres following Pains, and while it’s fun, too, it won’t be making my top pick tonight, either. Even after spending a day on set last summer with Megan and a few others.

My pick tonight is Parks and Recreation on NBC. It’s been gone all too long. Yet, with all the hype surrounding the third season premiere, I’m hoping that too high an expectation hasn’t been set that I end up disappointed. I, like most, didn’t care for the first season. Tried to watch the second season, but six or so episodes in, and I was out. But then I started to hear from some trusted voices that the show was markedly improved. The word “great” was being bandied about. So, I started watching again in the second half of season two and something clicked for me too. They finally figured out what to do with these characters to make me care about them and most importantly, actually make me laugh.

Well, I’ve been hearing the same things from the same people about the greatness of the first few episodes of the season three. So, I’m onboard. Hopefully, I haven’t been steered wrong and subsequently done the same thing to you.

Tonight, Leslie tries to get Ann to help her persuade Ben and Chris to give more money to the parks department. Ron and Andy are coaching a youth basketball team. And April has some big news to share.

Parks and Recreation plays tonight on NBC at 9:30/8:30c. Learn where to find episodes online of Parks and Recreation @ Clicker.

Lisa’s Choice

Another new episode airs tonight of The Big Bang Theory, one of the most entertaining and endearing shows on TV. Coming off a Golden Globe win (well deserved, at that), Jim Parsons continues to charm with his quirky and off beat personality as the lovable but annoying Sheldon Cooper. While in high school, you more than likely didn’t want to hang out with the nerds, now after tuning in to The Big Bang Theory, it’s opened up a whole new perspective and has made geek, chic! This band of geeky compadres will have you transfixed to the CBS network week after week, if you just let them weave their spell on you.

Tonight, tensions start to run high when everyone is coincidentally staying at the same hotel for a scientific event; Bernadette runs into her ex-boyfriend (played by guest star Rick Fox!), which causes Wolowitz to worry that he won’t be able to measure up to him. Sheldon is the one to plan the actual car ride to the event, which should make for funny on all its own.

Watch an all new episode on CBS tonight at 8/7c. Learn where to find episodes online of The Big Bang Theory @ Clicker.
