Welcome to a new week of TV! Lots of good stuff on this week, but a lot of shows are off, too, which makes the week SLIGHTLY more bearable! Unfortunately, this Tuesday is the State of the Union on all the broadcast networks, which means nothing great on TV. Ah well!

Don’t forget to comment or Tweet @tvismypacifier to let us know what YOU are planning to watch this week!

Wednesday

Wednesday features 4 series premieres. To read more about each of those, click the link below. Otherwise, check out tonight’s schedule!

Tonight is the series premiere of Sons of Guns on the Discovery Channel at 9/8c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 9:30/8:30c. “If you can dream it, we can build it” is the motto at Red Jacket, the nation’s most unique weapons business. Owner Will Hayden and his eclectic crew of Baton Rouge, Louisiana gunsmiths and historians rise to the challenge daily on Discovery Channel’s world premiere series SONS OF GUNS, creating one-of-a-kind custom weapons. The show fires off on Wednesdays at 10PM ET/PT, starting January 12. As a straight shooter and an avid historian, Will is a trusted expert to handle the requests of Red Jacket’s major clients – law enforcement, military and collectors. From guns to knives to swords to cannons, Will sells, trades, buys, builds and customizes them all. While weapons manufacturers are making attachable silencers for AK-47’s, Will takes it a step further — creating internal silencers that help police departments be even more stealth in threatening situations. If someone needs to restore a WWII flamethrower to make it operational, Will can do that too. And when the sheriff’s department needs to turn two guns – a shotgun and a rifle – into one, they call Will.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Desert Car Kings on the Discovery Channel at 10/9c. The McClure family is passionately restoring American glory, one classic car at a time. Their family business, Desert Valley Auto Parts, houses over 10,000 rust-free vehicles over 100 sun-baked Arizona acres. Not content with merely providing original parts for thousands of car collectors and restoration junkies each year, the McClures and their rag-tag crew are constantly on the hunt for cars to restore — seeking them out in backyards, barns and even on their own massive lot. Their goal? To restore these classic American cars to their original glory and get them back on the road, while discovering the unique and historically significant qualities of each car — and of course, to make a fair profit at auction.

The third series premiere tonight is Face Off on Syfy at 10/9c. Go inside the imaginative and creative world of special effects make-up artistry with Syfy’s new reality competition series. The series will introduce 12 up-and-coming make-up artists who will face off in Los Angeles in a series of elaborate challenges that will determine just who has the steady artistic hand to be the country’s next great SFX artist. For their first spotlight elimination challenge, the contestants are tasked to imagine an entirely new species, a human/animal hybrid, based on one of three exotic animals that are brought into their workspace lab — a beetle, an ostrich or an elephant. The contestants must work in teams of two to execute their creative visions, utilizing specialized skills including molding, sculpting, prosthetics and an involved application process on live models. Future elimination challenges include application of full body make-up to nude subjects, conceptualizing a creature that would inhabit a newly discovered planet, creating an original horror villain and transforming a “bride” into a “groom” and a “groom” into a “bride.”

The last series premiere tonight is The Traveler’s Guide to Life on the Travel Channel at 10/9c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 10:30/9:30c. Travel. Love. Family. Life is a journey and sometimes we need help navigating. Using interviews mixed with on-screen animation, The Traveler’s Guide to Life features amazing stories from dozens of extraordinary individuals who share their insight on the things that matter most. Along the way, these seasoned storytellers discover perfect moments that capture universal truths. You’ll see people like astronaut Buzz Aldrin describing what he learned on the moon, actress Charlyne Yi talking about her joy of sleeping under the Christmas tree and Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek learning the real meaning of winning.

Tonight is the 1-hour series premiere of Working Class on CMT at 8/7c. CMT’s first scripted sitcom stars follows Carli Mitchell (Melissa Peterman, Reba), a single mom from a rough and tumble background, trying to give her three kids a better life by moving them to an upscale suburb. She quickly finds that making the transition to “the good life” is harder than she thought. She’s unwittingly befriended by her cranky neighbor, Hank (Ed Asner, The Boondocks, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Mary Tyler Moore), her only “career” prospect is a glorified deli job at the local grocery store, and the man she falls for not only already has a girlfriend – but he’s also her boss, Rob (Patrick Fabian, Big Love, Veronica Mars). With her ladies-man brother, Nick (Steve Kazee), to help her out (when he’s not acting like one of the kids himself), Carli faces the challenges of parenting, dating, and making friends in her new community by doing more with less, staying true to herself and approaching each day with a touch of working class.

Saturday

Saturday is the series premiere of Kidnap & Rescue on the Discovery Channel at 10/9c. The show is a provocative new series about kidnapping and the rescuers with the courage to go where no one else can – risking violent reprisal to reclaim innocent victims, inside our borders and beyond. Whether it’s a high-profile executive being held for ransom, a child sold overseas or a DEA agent taken by a vengeful cartel, the hope of every victim lies in the hands of the few with the training and dedication to bring them home. It takes Discovery Channel viewers deep into a shadow world of astonishing cruelty and terrifying extremes. Each unforgettable story, told across 10 episodes, unfolds through first-hand accounts and cinematic reimaginings of the kidnap, the planning of the rescue and the recovery itself, to outcomes both triumphant and tragic. To fight the evolving threat, Kidnap & Rescue firms specialize in securing “high net worth” clients, providing cutting-edge surveillance on the U.S./Mexico border and orchestrating the collapse of human trafficking rings. Regardless of the mission, the motivations are the same – get everyone back alive, regardless of the danger.
