The theme for tonight’s top 12 is songs from the year the contestants were born. Let’s hope they don’t absolutely destroy the classics.
Naima Adedapo
What’s Love Got to Do With It (1984)
My Thoughts: What a terrible start to the night, it was horrible. She is not Tina Turner material, and I’m hoping this is not an omen about how the night is going to go.
Judges: Steven is a little off his rocker saying he loved it. Jennifer admitted she was pitchy, and Randy agrees.
More reviews after the jump.
Paul McDonald
I Guess That’s Why They Call it The Blues (1984)
My Thoughts: It wasn’t the worst he’s done, but I didn’t love it. I don’t know why but I just can’t seem to get on board with his voice. I love this song, but I didn’t love him singing it.
Judges: I can’t watch Steven Tyler when they cut to him while the contestants are performing, he’s like a bobble head that just keeps bouncing along. Jennifer thinks it sounded good and that he has a lot of soul. Randy thought he was a little pitchy. Steven thinks he defines a cool dude.
Thia Megia
Colors of the Wind (1995)
My Thoughts: She has a beautiful tone to her voice, and this song always makes me nostalgic for the classic Disney movies. I didn’t hate it, but I found it a little sleepy.
Judges: Randy thought it was just okay and he found it boring. Steven thinks she has a beautiful voice. Jennifer loves the quality of her voice, but thinks she’s being a little safe.
James Durbin
I’ll Be There For You(1989)
My Thoughts: He’s a bit of a show off with the microphone, but I have to say I actually really enjoyed this performance more than some of his others. One of these days he’s going to trip over his tail though. If nothing else he did Bon Jovi justice.
Judges: Steven liked it, but doesn’t want him to get “poppy”. Jennifer loved it, and Randy think he did it justice.
Haley Reinhart
I’m Your Baby Tonight(1990)
My Thoughts: Holy crap, that was torture. Hailey just killed that Whitney Houston song. It is time for her to go home because that was painful.
Judges: Jennifer thinks she’s a little too tense on stage. Randy is a little confused at what kind of artist she is. Steven wants to hear more blues from her.
Stefano Langone
If You Don’t Know Me By Now (1989)
My Thoughts:It was decent but I wasn’t jumping out of my seat. Although considering some of the huge train wrecks we’ve already had tonight, it was a good performance. I think the judges and audience were a little over dramatic about how good it was.
Judges: Randy thought it was the best performance of the night. Jennifer was way too over zealous with her “ten, ten, ten”. Steven thought it was over the top.
Pia Toscano
Where Do Broken Hearts Go (1988)
My Thoughts: Her outfit was hideous! I think she found it in her mom’s closet from 1988. The horrible fashion choice aside, she did this Whitney song a lot of justice. She was fierce tonight. I was impressed.
Judges: Steven thinks she nailed it. Jennifer thought it was perfect for her. Randy thinks Pia is in the competition to win it.
Scotty McCreery
Can I Trust You With My Heart(1993)
My Thoughts: I love Curious George. 😉 No really, every week he delivers solid vocals, and I haven’t heard such a natural talent in a long time. His voice reminds me of the adorable country singer, Paul Brandt. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Judges: Jennifer thinks he’s growing in the competition. Randy thinks he did Travis Tritt proud. Steven thinks he just needs to keep knowing who he is and he’ll go far.
Karen Rodriguez
Love Will Lead You Back(1989)
My Thoughts: The dress she’s wearing looks like something a stripper onThe Jetsons would wear. What is wrong with wardrobe this year? It was a good performance, but I wasn’t blown away. I think she can do better.
Judges: Randy thinks she eventually found her place. Steven loves the Spanish part. Jennifer thinks she did a good job hiding her nerves.
Casey Abrams
Smells Like Teen Spirit(1991)
My thoughts: Seriously, Shrogen (ie. Shrek + Seth Rogen), Nirvana? Really? I didn’t feel it at all. I don’t see him as the disaffected youth that rocked out to that song back in the day. He did however bring it on the bass. All that aside it was a risk, and we’ll see if it pays off.
Judges: Steven loved it. Jennifer found it a little screechy. Randy loves that he likes to take risks.
Lauren Alaina
I’m the Only One(1994)
My Thoughts: I really liked this performance, and that’s saying something because I love Melissa Etheridge. Lauren really stepped it up from last week, and she should be proud.
Judges:Jennifer thought it was really nice, with some country edge. Randy thought it was really good. Steven thought it was great.
Jacob Lusk
Alone(1987)
My Thoughts: Matthew Morrison and Kristin Chenoweth did a great rendition of this song on Glee, Jacob did not. My daughter said it hurt her ears. I don’t hear a Heart song and think of Jacob Lusk. The judges are all smoking something wacky because that was horrible.
Judges: Randy thought it was a very nice performance. Steven loved it. Jennifer loves how completely he gives himself to his performances.
I wasn’t overly wowed by the performances tonight and my bottom three this week are Naima, Haley and Jacob. Tune in tomorrow night for the results and see if I’m right. 🙂
My bottom 3 is exactly the same as yours, I think Naima should go home, I really don’t like her at all.
