If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/25/11

The season finales this year have been pretty good so far, with a few misses or confusing moments. I was happy with the Glee finale, and I really enjoyed the season finale of The Mentalist. Let’s see what finales or shows you should be watching tonight.

It’s been a strange season on American Idol, and I have to say that the only two contestants that I actually really enjoyed are in the finale, so I’m happy. It’s not that the other contestants were bad, just off. I do however think that James should have stayed around longer and had actually expected it to be James and Scotty in the finale, but oh well. James will have a great recording career regardless, as is the case with both Scotty and Lauren.

Last night, they sang their hearts out to win the title of American Idol, and tonight, we’ll find out who is the champion.

One of my favorite comedies this season by far has been Modern Family. They make up one big family, comprised of different types of relationships, from the traditional heterosexual/2.5 (*snicker*) kids of Phil & Claire, to the May/December romance of Jay & Gloria, to the gay couple of Mitchell & Cameron. It’s hard to pick a favorite, and depending on the episode, I think my favorite varies every week. I can always find something to love about each of them, though, and that’s what makes this show so fantastic.

On tonight’s season finale, Jay wants nothing more than a quiet birthday spent fishing on his own, but the family scrambles to put together a big celebration. Claire and Mitchell wind up trapped. Phil runs into his old college nemesis. Cameron gets into some hot water.

It’s really hard to say goodbye to a show that’s been a complete knockout all season long. Thankfully, it’s just the season finale, so all we have to do is say see you next season! The Middle has delivered consistent laughs and zany situations for the Heck family, and viewers have just gobbled it up. What could seem like just a dysfunctional family, has turned into a family that’s just as normal as you or your neighbor, but with a lot more quirks. What sets this show apart from others is that the family dynamic may not be perfect, but in the end, they truly love one another through all of their mayhem.

Tonight’s season finale has Brick writing a daily journal for school, and if he doesn’t, he might be held back (last year he had to turn in an overdue library book). Axl has time left to take care of for his community service requirement, and Sue must prove that she’s had perfect attendance all year.

I have to admit, I went into Happy Endings with very low expectations. There aren’t a ton of big names, the concept is…fairly similar to others we’ve seen (some with success, but others with huge failures – Traffic Light, anyone?), and I just wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But like (almost) always, I went into it with an open mind, determined to give it a shot. Now, at the end of season one, I’m so very glad I did. Yes, it’s about a group of friends, all in different stages of their lives, relationship-wise, but I really enjoy the humor the show brings, regardless of whether or not the concept itself is unique. I’m very glad it was renewed for next season. If you haven’t seen it, check out the finale tonight so you’ll see what you missed and will know to turn in next season!

Tonight, the sudden invitation to the wedding of an old friend, who was a slacker, has some unexpected consequences. Brad and Jane make a shocking discovery about their marital status. Penny convinces Derrick to pose as her fiance. Alex is considered a jinx.

The season finale airs tonight on ABC at 10:30/9:30c. Learn where to find episodes online of Happy Endings @ Clicker.

These beloved bumbling neighborhood misfits of the cul-de-sac crew on Cougar Town have really stepped up their game this season. Whether it was Bobby fulfilling his golfing dreams, Laurie moving on from a relationship, Jules trying to get Grayson to open up, Ellie being her snarkiest, or Andy dealing with family, this most definitely has been a season to remember. The writing has been on point, and there is now a new fad of Penny Can players. It really seems like this show is going to be an unstoppable force, and a show we wait with baited breath to watch on Wednesday nights.

Tonight, on the season finale, after Travis abruptly moves to Hawaii, the group decides to head there on vacation. Grayson tells Jules that he does want to have kids, while Laurie tries to lure Travis back home using her guile.
