If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/10/11

I just have to get through the next 9 days, and I’ll be on a plane to San Diego, getting ready to cover Comic-Con. It’s going to be a lot of fun, but it’s also an easy whirlwind of activity. Another exciting note is that it’s my birthday on the 19th, so Happy Birthday to me! A trip to San Diego, to see some of my favorite television stars. 🙂 Oh happy days! Enough about me. Let’s talk about this insanely busy week of television shall we?

You know what show is deliciously addictive? True Blood, of course. It doesn’t matter how many episodes I see of this show, or the fact that the show is not exactly like the books, I’m in love. The first two episodes of this season have been amazing, and I can’t help but want MORE.

On tonight’s episode, Eric and Sookie work out an agreement, while Bill renders advice and guidance to Jessica. Meanwhile, Jason becomes the hero, and Tommy, once again, becomes estranged from Sam. Pam instructs Lafayette that if demands aren’t met, retaliation may be in order. Marnie sets out to give her new powers a try. Eric upsets a get-together.

There are a lot of good shows on tonight, but no matter what else is on, my first pick of the night to watch AND to recommend is always going to be The Glades. I have a HUGE crush on Matt Passmore as Jim Longworth. One of my girl crushes for years has been Kiele Sanchez, so having her playing Callie opposite Jim is just too good for words! That’s a good enough reason for me, but I realize most people watch shows based on more than who is in them. If I felt like this show only had my pretties going for it, I wouldn’t recommend it. But the stories each week and the characters keep me coming back for more, regardless of who is playing the characters. The show is a combination of a lot of different shows, in my opinion, but it puts its own spin on things to keep it interesting and entertaining. It’s my #1 Must See TV each week.

On tonight’s episode, some accidental foot contact in a men’s restroom at a truck stop enrages one of the men to give the other a piece of his mind. What he discovers in the next stall is a man beaten to death. Longworth follows the trail of clues to a luxury rehab center. In the meantime, Carlos’ attention is pulled between the crime scene, helping a sexy former colleague he has a “history” with, and his daughter’s quinceanera. Callie and Jeff struggle to keep it together as a family during Ray’s absence.

The Diva is back and better than ever! Drop Dead Diva has returned for an all new season, and it’s chock full of drama, humor, and emotion. Jane and BFF/sidekick Stacy make for one hilariously unique duo. Couple them with neurotic angel Fred, and you’ve got plenty to watch. But that’s not even all. There’s Jane’s obnoxious boss Parker, disgruntled assistant Teri, and former work nemesis Kim. Roll all of this into one, and you get a show that should be on your weekly watch list!

Tonight, Jane ends up representing a woman in a suit against a sperm bank that she used to conceive her son. Grayson lands a brand new client, and Fred enlists a coworker to pretend to be his mother. Also, Parker continues his fight and struggles to get Kim to return to the firm.

Expectations were incredibly high for TNT’s latest drama, Falling Skies, and in my opinion, it’s lived up to or surpassed every single one. The aliens have a creepy good look to them, the angst and drama is so heart wrenching (especially about the missing/kidnapped children), and the way the survivors come together every week is just completely touching. The show is an easy enough watch that my 13 year old can watch it, but intricate enough that it keeps us entertained and glued to the TV every Sunday night. It’s a great show for families, for date night with your significant other, or for you to curl up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and watch alone. However you do it, as long as you are watching, that’s all that matters!

Tonight, Hal comes up with a risky new plan to rescue captured teenagers from the aliens, but it might require putting someone at risk. Meanwhile, a sudden tragedy causes Anne to make an enormous discovery that proves instrumental to Hal’s risky plan.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s eighth season premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm. In the show, Larry David, the creator of Seinfeld, plays an exaggerated version of himself, who always gets himself into awkward situations that result in even more awkward “solutions.” I first caught an episode of this show one night back in 2000, when it aired after The Sopranos. At that time, I thought it was terrible and shut the TV off after 5 minutes. A couple years later, when HBO Comedy was airing reruns every night, I tried the show again and loved it! I had assumed last season’s Seinfeld Reunion themed episodes (which aired almost two years ago) would be Curb’s final season, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover this show was coming back!

Much like Seinfeld, each episode features multiple story lines that inevitably come together by the end in some unusual (but always awkward and amusing) way. You can tell that parts of this show are improvised, but that gives some great authentic reactions between the characters. Curb Your Enthusiasm is so much fun, and Larry David makes you so frustrated that you love to hate him!

This season, the show moves from California to New York. In tonight’s premiere, “The Divorce,” Larry learns that his divorce lawyer is not kosher; Larry cancels a Girl Scout cookie order.

I promised myself I wouldn’t choose more than 2 shows at the most per night, and that I would choose shows that I truly believed were can’t miss. Tonight, though, there is a third show that I think is worth the mention. Leverage is a great drama with some fantastic comedic elements. Tonight’s episode specifically, though, is one I wanted to recommend you watch when I first heard about it last week. The tension is sure to be high, which will make for a great episode.

On tonight’s ep, Nate cleverly comes up with a plan to take down a public relations consultant by building up his reputation in the business as a bona fide hero, so that he will be able to destroy the man’s entire career by giving him a taste of his own medicine.

See the promo below to learn why I think it will be a tension-filled episode, and then watch tonight on TNT at 9/8c. Learn where to find episodes online of Leverage @ Clicker.
