If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/14/11

Well, it’s official. The new Fall shows started last night, with the series premiere of Ringer and season premiere of 90210. There’s more tonight, both premieres and finales, so check out what we think you should be watching!

Jenny’s Choice #1

My top pick tonight has to be the two new episodes—including the season finale—of Melissa & Joey on ABC Family. I have loved this show from the very beginning. There is something ridiculously endearing about Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence, and together, the two are extraordinary. Off screen, they both seem like genuinely nice people, too, which makes the show that much easier for me to love. (I follow them both on Twitter: @MellyJHart & @joeylawrence.) There are two episodes tonight, including the season finale, which I’m sad about. The show WILL be back for a 2nd season, though, so that helps take away some of the sadness.

On tonight’s first episode, “Do As I Say, Not As I Did,” Mel helps Lennox get ready for her school dance but has a difficult time discussing teenage pressures with her. After she catches Lennox’s boyfriend making an adult purchase at the pharmacy, she enlists Joe’s help in getting through to Lennox. Back at home, Ryder finally finds the courage to stand up to his bossy girlfriend, Holly.

Then on the season finale, “The Settlement,” Joe finds himself coming into some money owed him by his previous employer, which allows him to pursue other interests, so he quit his “manny” job. With Joey moving out and no longer her employee, Mel and Joe realize they may have more than friendly feelings for each other. And the leaky ceiling in Mel’s house proves to be a larger problem than Joe anticipated, leading to some very unexpected destruction.

Tonight is the season finale of Big Brother, and once again, no one I hoped would make it to the end did. There aren’t even two people left that I’d like to see win any money. From the start, I really wanted a “newbie” to win, because I can’t stand these people who turn reality TV games shows into a career.

So I am hoping that Porshe takes home the big prize. Adam has done nothing all game, so as much as I dislike Rachel, I am hoping that she comes in second. Although, I think both Rachel and Porche would be stupid not to take Adam with them to the end. Everyone knows he did nothing, and they will not make him the winner. I hope next year, someone more deserving will make it to the finals and win the prize.

Jenny’s Choice #2

One of the shows I’ve been looking forward to most since seeing the first info & trailer for new Fall shows is the new NBC comedy, Up All Night, starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett. I absolutely adore Christina in everything I’ve ever seen her in, and while I haven’t really liked any of the shows I’ve seen Will in, I like HIM. And as a parent, the premise of this just cracks me up. This show is a modern take on parenthood that shows the challenges of balancing a career, marriage, and a new baby. Applegate (Samantha Who?) stars as Reagan, a successful public relations executive, and Will Arnett (Arrested Development) plays Chris, Reagan’s supportive, stay-at-home husband. The two have just become parents—a surprise that has set their lives on a new path as responsible adults…for the most part. Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) stars as Ava, Reagan’s outlandish boss and best friend, whose whirlwind social escapades serve as constant reminders of Reagan’s former carefree life. James Pumphrey (High Road) portrays Brian, Reagan’s socially awkward hipster assistant. The previews have had my husband & me both cracking up, so I have high hopes for the show.

On tonight’s episode, determined not to compromise her career or cool reputation to the cliches of motherhood, Reagan Brinkley adjusts to life with a baby and returns to work with the support of her stay-at-home husband, Chris. As if motherhood weren’t enough, as a talk-show executive producer, Reagan must also tend to the endless needs of her friend and boss Ava, an ambitious but vulnerable talk-show host. Nick Cannon stars as Ava’s charismatic co-host Calvin and Jennifer Hall stars as Ava’s long-suffering assistant Missy. Matt Lauer guest stars.

Catch this (hopefully) funny series premiere tonight on NBC at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Up All Night @ Clicker.

Megan’s Choice

Tonight is the series premiere of the new comedy, Free Agents, which stars Hank Azaria (The Simpsons) as the recently divorced Alex, who is missing his kids and trying to keep himself together. Alex’s co-worker Helen (Kathryn Hahn, Hung) thinks she is holding it all together after her fiance’s untimely death, but she’s been drinking too much. It’s not a surprise when these two hook up and then have to deal with the awkward morning after. I’m also interested in watching the pilot because Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is starring in it as the boss. That alone is reason to check it out!

In the premiere episode, we watch the fateful meeting of Alex and Helen, as well as learn the ropes of the characters.

Tune in to NBC at 10:30/9:30c to find out if this new comedy is for you. Learn where to find episodes online of Free Agents @ Clicker.

  1. Kyle says:

I’m also looking forward to Up All Night–really enjoyed Applegate’s Samantha Who and Arnett on Arrested Development and Running Wilde.
I’m a little apprehensive of Free Agents. I watched the original 6-episode UK series and it really wasn’t very good. (BBCA is planning to air it starting October 8.) Hopefully they can pull a The Office and make the US version better than the UK one (although the UK The Office actually started out great).

  2. Jenny says:

I love Kathryn Hahn, so I’m hoping I enjoy it. The previews have been pretty funny. heh
