If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/19/11

It’s slim pickings this week in television as we count down the final days until Christmas (Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, as well 🙂 ). That said, we’re TV addicts, so of course we’ll find something for you to watch. It’s like our cosmic duty or something! Let’s see what we are guiding your remote to tonight.

I don’t usually go the TLC route, but Next Great Baker is an incredibly amusing show. Not only do you have the very funny Buddy, the Cake Boss himself, but you get a bunch of bakers trying to impress him. He’s a hard person to impress, considering his cakes are always amazing. So far, one of my favorite contestants is Heather, because she’s just too sweet for words.

On tonight’s episode, “Bakers on Ice,” the bakers split up into teams to make a holiday-themed cake for the Valastro Christmas party.

To see whose cake earns a gold star, tune in to TLC at 9/8c. Learn where to find episodes online of Next Great Baker @ Clicker.

I love Rizzoli & Isles. It’s always so much fun. Last week, we saw Jane go back to school for her high school reunion, and while there, one of her classmates started to ask her for help. When he was pulled away, he said he’d call her. Shortly after that, the man was killed. After everything, it turned out to be the wife of the man’s boss that had killed him. The man’s company had designed a heart valve, and it was defective. The dead classmate was going to go to the police with the information he’d uncovered, but the killer got to him first. It was a really good episode! It was sad, though, because Jane was supposed to be going with the Army guy, Sgt. Major Charles “Casey” Jones, but he was held up doing Army stuff. They Skyped several times, though, so it was good to see him!

On tonight’s episode, “Don’t Stop Dancing, Girl,” the world of competitive dance turns deadly when the mother of a star performer is stabbed to death at a competition. Jane and the team search for clues, but they soon realize something is off about the woman’s history. Korsak has his hands full when his stepson is accused of shooting a cop. Guest star Lolita Davidovich returns as Korsak’s ex-wife Melody.

Don’t miss it tonight on TNT at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Rizzoli & Isles @ Clicker.

Tonight is the 2-hour season (and possibly series) finale of Terra Nova. Last week, Jim discovered that Skye was the Sixer mole. Meanwhile, Lucas solved how to make the portal to 2149 go both ways and tells Skye not to go back to Terra Nova, because his employers, the ones who hired the Sixers, are coming to take over Terra Nova by force. However, Skye’s dying mother tells her she needs to go back and tell Commander Taylor everything. Upon hearing about Lucas’ achievement, Taylor rushes to the Stargate—err portal—but cannot stop Lucas from going back to 2149.

It should be an exciting finale tonight. What is this mysterious group that wants to take over Terra Nova, and what is their plan? Who will show up when the 11th Pilgrimage arrives? Will the colonists be able to defend their home? I just hope we get some sort of resolution, in case there isn’t a second season. Oh, and lots of dino-chomping action (of which there was none last week)! 🙂

In tonight’s 2 episodes, “Occupation” and “Resistance,” the 11th Pilgrimage reaches Terra Nova, the Phoenix Group moves ahead with their plan with help from Lucas and Mira, Taylor and Jim unite against the Phoenix Group, and a life-changing decision is made.

See the 2-hour finale tonight on FOX at 8/7c. Learn where to find episodes online of Terra Nova @ Clicker.

On the last episode of The Closer, Brenda’s parents came for a visit, and she learned that her father has thyroid cancer. Brenda struggled to come to grips with this and deal with the horrible mood swings that her father would lash out with. Brenda also investigated the death of a man who was murdered after the FBI filmed him getting beaten up. It was really hard for Brenda to focus on the case, but she got some great advice from Buzz, who had a relative who had thyroid cancer. I think with the information she learned from Buzz and the coroner, along with her dad’s promise to work on his control of his emotions, Brenda will be able to take her father’s diagnosis in stride.

Tonight, on an all new episode, the Major Crimes Division investigates a case of a hit and run murder of a girl on a bicycle. Also, Brenda uncovers a scandal.

Tune in to TNT at 9/8c for another gripping episode! Learn where to find episodes online of The Closer @ Clicker.

Tonight is the premiere of Who’s Still Standing? on NBC. This is a new and unique trivia show that keeps the contestants and viewers on their toes by dropping contestants through the floor. It’s hosted by Ben Bailey (Cash Cab) and is based on the Israeli format, Still Standing, that offers players the chance to win up to $1 million while competing in head-to-head trivia battles.

At the start of the competition, there is one main competitor and 10 challengers. The main competitor chooses one of the 10 challengers to go head-to-head against in a trivia battle for a high-stakes pot that can lead to a $1 million dollar jackpot. If one of the two players answers a question incorrectly, he/she will be dropped through a trap door and is out of the competition. It continues until there is one person left standing.

In the premiere, “Country Strong,” a volleyball coach from Arkansas battles 10 opponents.

To see if this gameshow stands a chance to stay on your schedule, tune in to NBC at 8/7c. Learn where to find episodes online of Who’s Still Standing @ Clicker.

Next Great Baker is a show that I would probably love…if it wasn’t hosted by Buddy. I never liked his other show–always felt like a low-rent Ace of Cakes, staffed by the cast of the Jersey Shore. If they ever change hosts, perhaps I’ll give it a watch. 🙂 For now, I’ll just stick with the cake episodes of Food Network Challenge.

Didn’t realize the host for Who’s Still Standing? was the Cash Cab guy–may actually be pretty good then. I’ll probably watch the first episode just to check it out, but I suspect it’s going to be yet another 30 min game show stretched to fill an hour.
