TV News – So You Think You Can Dance Result Show Cancelled

Yesterday, Nigel Lythgoe, Executive Producer for So You Think You Can Dance, took to his Twitter to announce FOX’s decision to cut the weekly results show.

Lythgoe said that the cancellation of the results show will mean he’ll have to change how the show is done, but he’s still happy they have a 9th season. In my opinion, this is a very dumb move and will probably contribute to this being the last season for the show.

I’m not disputing that there are a lot of really bad reality programs. So You Think You Can Dance is not one of them. These dancers are very talented and deserve their 15 minutes of fame way more than some other dancing programs – ie. Dancing with the Has Beens … I mean, Dancing with the Stars.

I get that results show can drag on and seem pointless – I’m looking at you American Idol and The X Factor – but this is one of the few reality type shows where the results show really does play a part in the outcome. If you are unfamiliar with the format (and after 8 seasons, it’s hard to believe you could be), the bottom 3 dancers are given a chance to dance for their lives to remind the judges why they deserve to be there. Then the judges ultimately make the decision of who should go home from who America placed in the bottom 3. This has worked wonderfully for the last 8 seasons. Why change it now?

A less drastic, and overall more intelligent choice by FOX, would have been to cut the results show from 1 hour down to 30 minutes, remove the filler crap of guest performances, and just keep it simple. Unfortunately for all of us who actually like So You Think You Can Dance, FOX didn’t think like that, so we’re going to have a new format that we probably will end up hating.

Sound off below and let me know what you think about this big change.

I agree, most result shows are bloated and useless. 30 minutes is more than enough to reveal results and do a dance-off. No need for special guests, etc. The one thing I like about this is perhaps other shows will do the same–shows like American Idol don’t even need 30 minutes to do their results–they could easily do this in 5 minutes or less at the start of the next episode or online.

Last year Fox presented plans to cut back the AI result show to 30 minutes, only to come back and give AI an hour anyway. And what a utter waste of time those group-numbers and dragging-out-of-the-results are. And I can imagine Fox isn’t to happy with the ratings for the results of SYTYCD, but I don’t think other original programming will do better over summer. And the SYTYCD results were actually entertaining.

But on another note, maybe a creative look at the format will inspire them, because the all-stars haven’t been as amazing as I hoped beforehand. And the dwindling numbers for a stale and unchanging format like AI (and SYTYCD as well) prove that they should take a critical look at what works and what doesn’t.

If this causes a great creative change, I’d be happy, but I’m not hopeful. This is one of the few reality shows I actually enjoy the result shows for, and I hate to think that the new format will rush the dancers anymore. I guess we’ll have to see when the new format is released.

Some of the all-stars haven’t been as amazing, but there are those (Neil, Ade) that I don’t mind seeing all the time. 🙂
