This Week on TV – 4/28/13-5/4/13

Welcome to a new week of TV! Welcome to “May Sweeps,” which started officially (as official as these things can be…) on Thursday of last week. Lots of shows are back this week, which means the schedule’s pretty full, and there should be some great eps because this is when shows try to put out their best in order to gain advertisers for next season. So enjoy them now because pretty soon, all our favorites will be gone for the summer (and some, unfortunately, will be gone forever…).

Don’t forget to comment or Tweet @tvismypacifier to let us know what YOU are planning to watch this week!

Tonight is the series premiere of Family Tools on ABC at 9/8c. Jack Shea (Kyle Bornheimer) has never had much luck when it comes to his career. In the police academy, he accidentally shot himself. In the Army, he accidentally shot someone else. And seminary school didn’t work out so well when he started suggesting “punch ups” for the Bible. But Jack is forced to put his constantly-changing dreams on hold when his dad Tony (JK Simmons) has a heart attack and is forced to retire from his hometown handyman business. Now, armed with big dreams, power tools and a slacker assistant, Darren (Edi Gathegi), Jack becomes the new Mr. Jiffy-Fix. But it’s not easy: Jack has a tendency to bite off more than he can chew and it doesn’t help that his dad is always looking over his shoulder. But if Jack can find his sea legs, with a little help from his family including his forceful and outspoken Aunt Terry (Leah Remini), his teenage cousin, Mason (Johnny Pemberton), and Darren’s flrty sister, Stitch (Danielle Nicolet) he just might finally make his father proud.

Tonight is also the series premiere of The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius on Discovery Channel at 10/9c. The show will feature a seemingly impossible engineering challenge to be solved by the contestants each week. Competitors will have just 30 minutes to come up with a solution using their own intellect to complete the challenge. Based on logic and design, the expert panel of judges will determine the best engineering concept and select two captains to lead their team to execute the project. The team with the best design will remain safe, but the losers will face the judges who will determine which member will be eliminated. The cameras will not only capture the tension and pressure in the design workshop, but will also go inside the living quarters where all the competitors must reside – dealing with each other’s quirks and habits. The winner of the competition will earn $50,000 and a one year contract to work at WET, the industry leader behind some of the world’s most innovative water-based designed environments and experiences including the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas. The show is hosted by actor and producer Kal Penn. He is joined each week by judges Mark Fuller, President and CEO of WET and Dr. Christine Gulbranson, a nanotechnologist and renewable energy innovator.

The Guadagnino family has cooked up the perfect recipe to ensure celebrities feel right at home as they let their guard down and have a meal and candid conversation. Each week, Vinny invites celebrity guests into his home so they can experience the hospitality and Italian cuisine prepared by his ultimate hostess mother, Paola, and the antics of the party boss, Uncle Nino, and more. The stars paying visit to the Staten Island, NY home turf this season include Mark Wahlberg, Lil Wayne, Ke$ha, Jenny McCarthy, A$AP Rocky, Whitney Cummings, Scott Disick, Anthony Mackie, Ciara, Austin Mahone, Brittany Snow, Kat Graham, Red Foo, Iggy Azalea, Perez Hilton, Victoria Justice, The Saturdays, Jenna Marbles, Erica Mena, MGK, Bella Thorne, Mindless Behavior and Tyler The Creator.

The series follows Zach, who hires a camera crew to film him throughout his daily life as a part of his quest to become an over-night celebrity – even though he possesses no real talent. From Zach’s attempts to become a celebrity chef or a ring-tone recording artist to purposefully going missing, he’ll try any avenue to get noticed and stop at nothing until he reaches fame.
