I spent two summers working at a resident camp in my early twenties, so I have a lot of stories. A favorite memory, however, would be the time we had an alligator in camp. The unit I ran had six cabins near the river, but we usually never saw anything except birds. One morning, two counselors and I were on our way back from brushing our teeth when one spotted the gator just on the bank. He was mostly hidden from view, thanks to a screened area we had for activities. The girls were getting dressed and doing their morning chores so I told each counselor to take half the girls and leave for breakfast ASAP, using a back trail instead of the one we would normally take to meals. I went and walkie’d a “code green” and stayed in the screened house while the group headed off to breakfast. The gator had slid back into the water before backup arrived, and we never saw him on the property again, but it was certainly an exciting fifteen minutes!
I never got to do summer camp, but i did run one in college. My boss was this really racist old woman who was 20 years past retirement. During training, she told us to watch for the black kids because they can’t swim as well as the whites, due to the fact that their brains are smaller. I was appalled. One day she showed up to work not fully dressed. I did not make it through the whole summer, only until I got food poisoning because she packed week old food on our fourth of July outing. When I was able to get out of bed, I packed my things and left.
didn’t go to camp; heard from a friend the water races were fun
Loved sleep-away camp in Santa Cruz. One year, we colored our fair with a permanent red marker, & the counselors made us wash our hair until it came out. It took a really long time.
We went to camp every summer. Lots of great memories, swimming, new friends, games. The best part was seeing old friends every summer. Lots of pranks too. My best memory was when I was 13 and my group all girls competed against an all boys team. The losers had to be the winners assistants for the day. We ended up winning and I learned 2 great lessons that summer. Girls can beat boys and it is fun to have people cater to you. The birth of my love of winning and of mani~pedis!
One summer, my friend was told by her friends and family she should lose a couple pounds. And her parents agreed. One morning, she was awoken by a bugle her mother found when she went to Wal-Mart. She said “I signed you up for ‘Camp Green'”. She thought that this was a camp geared towards saving the planet, when in reality it was a camp focused on healthier eating. The bus soon arrived, and she left.
The bus driver looked as if he was in the marines for a few years. His name was Sgt. Larry, or that’s what he wanted the campers to call him. In the end it was the best two weeks of my friends life. She lost weight and turned out Sgt. Larry had a hot son, they are soulmates and happily married now.
