Tonight is the series premiere of Reign on The CW at 9/8c. Hidden between the lines of the history books is the story of Mary Stuart, the young woman the world would come to know as Mary, Queen of Scots. Queen of Scotland since she was six days old, the teenage Mary is already a headstrong monarch – beautiful, passionate, and poised at the very beginning of her tumultuous rise to power. Arriving in France with four close friends as her ladies-in-waiting, Mary has been sent to secure Scotland’s strategic alliance by formalizing her arranged engagement to the French king’s dashing son, Prince Francis. But the match isn’t signed and sealed, it depends more on politics, religion and secret agendas than affairs of the heart. Prince Francis is intrigued by the fiery Scot, but like most young men, he resists the idea of settling down into marriage, especially when he has a history with a lady of the court and his own point of view on the wisdom of an alliance with Scotland. Still, an attraction between Mary and Francis is ignited. Further complicating things is Bash, Francis’ roguish half-brother, who has a history of his own – despite his illegitimate birth, Bash is his father’s favorite. And now that Bash has caught Mary’s eye, a royal triangle may be forming. While at French Court, fierce foes and dark forces conspire to sabotage Mary’s marriage to Francis and even threaten her life, until a mysterious shrouded guide becomes her ally. With danger and sexual intrigue around every dark castle corner, Mary rallies her ladies-in-waiting and steels herself, ready to rule the new land and balance the demands of her country and her heart. The series stars Adelaide Kane (Teen Wolf) as Mary, Toby Regbo (One Day) as Prince Francis, Torrance Coombs (The Tudors) as Bash, Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables) as Queen Catherine, Alan Van Sprang (The Tudors) as King Henry, Celina Sinden as Greer, Caitlin Stasey as Kenna, Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) as Lola, and Jenessa Grant (Cyberbully) as Aylee.

Tonight is the series premiere of The Birthday Boys on IFC at 10:30/9:30c. IFC’s new original sketch comedy series showcases the silly-meets-smart humor from the popular comedy troupe of the same name. With a nod to absurd yet intelligent legacy sketch shows Monty Python, Mr. Show, and Kids in the Hall, the series appropriates familiar scenarios and classic TV, film and sketch archetypes with a fresh take. Drawing from the unique collaboration between Odenkirk and The Birthday Boys as writers, directors and performers, The Birthday Boys features both stand-alone and multi-act sketches that poke fun at real-life moments and cultural touchstones. From Steve Jobs and the rise of the personal computer, Lance Armstrong and the prevalence of performance-enhancing drugs, to the hardships of trying to keep up with too many shows on your DVR – the series takes a hilariously skewed perspective on everyone’s shared experiences.

Saturday

Saturday is the series premiere of Dancing on the Edge on Starz at 10:05/9:05c. The tuneful five-part drama stars Golden Globe(R) Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years of a Slave, Salt, American Gangster), Matthew Goode (Stoker, A Single Man, Brideshead Revisited), Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R) Award nominee Jacqueline Bisset (Joan of Arc, Two Jacks), and Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R) Award winner John Goodman (The Monuments Men, Inside Llewyn Davis, Monster’s University). Inspired by true accounts of the phenomenal Duke Ellington Band mingling with the future Duke of Windsor Edward VIII in Europe, the mini-series takes place in London during the early 1930s. The story illustrates the journey of a group of Black jazz musicians – the Louis Lester Band – as they steadily rise to stardom, a result of performing at various elite social gatherings hosted by London’s aristocrats. Although Britain’s climate was flourishing with extraordinary social change, much of the upper-class loathed the idea of Black musicians performing in polite society. Still, the city’s more progressive socialites (including members of the Royal Household) befriend the ensemble and introduce them to posh life. The blissful eminence surrounding the band abruptly changes when the band members are entangled in a murder conspiracy.

Tonight is also the season premiere of The Graham Norton Show on BBC America at 11/10c, with guests Harrison Ford, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jack Whitehall, & singer James Blunt.

Finally, it’s the season finale of The White Queen on Starz at 9/8c.
