This Week on TV – 10/20/13-10/26/13

Welcome to a new week of TV! Last week was busy in terms of cancelations & pick-ups. On the pick-up list were: Mom, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, & Brooklyn Nine-Nine (which also got the coveted post-Super Bowl spot!), Franklin & Bash (yes, it’s a summer cable show, but hey, it got renewed, so yay! 🙂 ), and with an order for additional scripts but not full-season pick-ups (yet) are The Goldbergs & Trophy Wife. On the flip side of that, the newly canceled shows are: Ironside & Welcome to the Family, both from NBC. There’s still plenty on, though, so settle in, get your remotes handy, and check out what’s on this week. 🙂

Don’t forget to comment or Tweet @tvismypacifier to let us know what YOU are planning to watch!

Tuesday

Tonight is the series premiere of Ravenswood on ABC Family at 9/8c. The show will center on a town, not far from Rosewood, PA (the home base of Pretty Little Liars), which has suffered under a deadly curse for generations. Five strangers suddenly find themselves connected by this fatal curse and need to dig into the town’s mysterious and terrible history before it’s too late for each of them. Tyler Blackburn (Caleb, Pretty Little Liars) will star.

Tonight is also the series premiere of American Daredevils on History Channel at 10/9c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 10:30/9:30c. The series allows viewers to ride shotgun with a dying breed of uniquely American heroes. From the dirt tracks of America’s heartland to the bright lights of the country’s biggest speedways, the show brings to life the stories of the men who proudly carry the torch lit by Evel Knievel. These daredevils travel the country performing live death-defying acts without the luxuries of rehearsals or second chances. They launch themselves through the air in cars and motorcycles, light themselves on fire, jump off tall buildings and risk their lives in countless crash and burn stunts all for the freedom of making a living while doing what they love. These are the last of the daredevil breed and as their lives unfold, it becomes clear that “the stunt” is only part of their story.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Chasing Nashville on Lifetime at 10/9c. The oft-attempted rocky road to country music success is met with tears, rivalry, and intense scrutiny. Through extensive access to the home and budding professional lives of four ambitious teen singers from Appalachia, the series will follow the high drama and competition they encounter like no other singing show as they, and their equally determined families, lay everything on the line in pursuit of fame and fortune in country music. For decades, countless hopeful young singers have struggled to fight their way from the hollers of Appalachia for the opportunity to be plucked from obscurity and rise to the top of the music charts. Many have tried, while only a select few have succeeded. Chasing Nashville delves into the real lives of these four young singers as they embark on the uncertain path thousands of others have sought for the rare chance at securing a recording contract. The pressure mounts onstage as they are coached and recruited for high-profile showcases by some of country’s best scouts, including renowned Grammy(R)-winning producer Keith Thomas (Trisha Yearwood’s You’re Where I Belong) and respected writer/producer Deanna Walker (The Dixie Chicks). But behind these budding stars are their cutthroat stage moms and dads who take competition seriously – maybe too seriously – as family dreams ride on their daughter’s success. The girls are committed to make a better life for themselves by attempting to scale to the top of the mountain in the music world.

Finally, tonight is the series premiere of Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host on TBS at 10:30/9:30c. This is the only game show in which contestants have to contend with a pair of dueling hosts determined to deceive them at every turn. In each episode, D.L. Hughley and Michael Ian Black each present a single contestant with a bizarre and seemingly implausible fact, one of which is true, the other of which is not. The contestant must then choose the true fact to be rewarded in the game. The players who prove themselves to be super-human lie detectors will go home with a pocketful of cash.

Grammy Award-winning music producer Pharrell Williams, international model Erin Wasson, and Rihanna’s personal stylist, Mel Ottenberg, will mentor these contestants as they push their creative boundaries to the max. Each week, the designers will be presented with a different challenge, each aimed at creating a new look to define the celebrity guest’s image, and in turn battle it out in the sewing room. However, only half of the contestants selected by the mentors will get to showcase their new design for the client and have a shot at winning. The other half will be placed up for elimination. The stakes are high because the grand prize is life-changing: $100,000 cash, a fashion feature in Glamour magazine and the chance to become the next member of Rihanna’s design team.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Dracula on NBC at 10/9c. Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) stars in this provocative new drama as one of the world’s most iconic characters. It’s the late 19th century and the mysterious Dracula (Rhys Meyers) has arrived in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. He’s especially interested in the new technology of electricity, which promises to brighten the night – useful for someone who avoids the sun. But he has another reason for his travels: He hopes to take revenge on those who cursed him with immortality centuries earlier. Everything seems to be going according to plan…until he becomes infatuated with a woman who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. Victoria Smurfit (About a Boy), Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong), Jessica De Gouw (Arrow), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Mr. Selfridge), Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones), and Katie McGrath (Merlin) also star.

Finally, tonight is also the series premiere of Strike Back: Origins on Cinemax at 10/9c. This is a compelling story of betrayal, glory, redemption and revenge played out through the interlinking lives of two former soldiers: military hero Major Hugh Collinson and discharged veteran John Porter. On the eve of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Porter leads a Special Forces Unit on a daring hostage rescue mission into the heart of Basra, culminating in a disastrous turn of events for him and Collinson. Porter bares the burden of guilt, with the repercussions haunting him for years, until an opportunity presents itself to return to Iraq and redeem himself. After seven years apart, Porter and Collinson’s lives are about to collide once again… Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton star. The returning cast also includes Rhona Mitra and Michelle Lukes; new cast members include Robson Green, Milauna Jackson and Dougray Scott. (This is technically season 1 of Strike Back that Cinemax skipped, so…)
