This Thursday at midnight, another season of the hilarious Adult Swim series Childrens Hospital comes to a close. Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to participate in a press conference call with series writer/creator (and Dr. Blake Downs himself), Rob Corddry. Right from the start of the call, it was easy to tell how gracious and appreciative Rob was of the show’s loyal fans. Rob talks about the series and previews what fans can expect in the season finale.
Kyle Nolan: Could you talk a little bit about the craziness we can expect in the season finale and the challenges or benefits that you found making a double-length episode?
Rob Corddry: Well, it was â€“ yes, basically, the same challenges that would come with making any episode increased by 50 percent. It was a lot. We were really kind of under the gun, and we always are when weâ€™re shooting. And this episode, in particular, we were writing right up until the minute it was shooting downstairs, and sometimes even during, because, you know, we got cocky after last season. We won an Emmy. Itâ€™s sort of like, oh, we got this. We can throw these three episodes away and just write some more as we go.
And so we were just writing a lot. And I was literally writing a scene for two days in the future. I was looking over notes that David was rewriting for a scene that was going to be done next while I was writing a scene that was actually shooting downstairs with Erinn Hayes that was a complete circus.

Kyle Nolan: Is everything pretty much scripted, or does the cast also improvise?
Rob Corddry: Yes. I mean, we have some of the best improvisers working in comedy today, so it would be silly to say you have to â€“ you have to say every word. And also, itâ€™s not really the trend these days, is that this is the idea. If I want something [inaudible] particularly want something stressed, then say it that way, but, you know, for the most part, itâ€™s just an idea.
And usually, the common way to do it is, for all movies and TV shows, is to like you do it on the script, and then you have your fun with it, but weâ€™re just lucky that we have some of the best working right now, you know, who are making up â€“ I mean, Huebel is like â€“ he is like the Big Pappy of Childrens Hospital â€“ always hitting grand slams.
Kyle Nolan: Last year, you had done the Newsreaders spinoff. Do you have any other spinoffs or crossovers with other Adult Swim shows planned?
Rob Corddry: No, we â€“ not really. Like, we had a little thing this season with NTSF as the [inaudible], where we both found ourselves with episodes that had to do with face swapping, so we are like, â€œOh, we both canâ€™t do that, can we?â€ Well, I guess, we can, but we have to connect them a little bit, so we put a fake commercial in between the two.
But thereâ€™s no â€“ none planned. You know, Robot Chicken, every time I see those guys, meet the staff like Iâ€™ll â€“ weâ€™ll talk about it. But there really isnâ€™t. Thereâ€™s not even a lot of crossover with Newsreaders in Childrens, although it came up a lot this year in the writersâ€™ room for Newsreaders. So some of those characters, the actors who play the characters, the quote, actors, unquote who play the characters in the show Childrens Hospital might show up this season of Newsreaders. And also, theyâ€™re going to show up on tonightâ€™s episode.
I donâ€™t know if we will have time to â€“ at least thatâ€™s for all of you to know that tonight is sort of one of our behind-the-scenes episodes.
Kyle Nolan: Do you have a favorite character that you like to write scenes for or a certain character that you particularly like to do scenes with?
Rob Corddry: Oh, man. Thatâ€™s a great question. Iâ€™m really, really hard-pressed to choose. And I have no problem picking favorites. Believe me.
Let me see here. God, thereâ€™s like â€“ any of them like have their â€“ like, â€œOh, yay, I get to do a scene today with so and so.â€ One thing stands out off the top of my head. Every year, every season, Huebel and I have a scene where it seems like we really like enjoy the fact that weâ€™ve been improvising together since â€™97 and really get into it. And so thatâ€™s always kind of fun like, â€œOh, this will probably be the theme.â€ To me, you know, we just really like we improvise it, and itâ€™s really funny.
And I would also have to say Chet is pretty funny to write, because Brian Huskey is a maniac and so easy to channel. And I think I find it very hard to write for Reverend Jewy McJewJew, that David does that almost exclusively.
Who else? Erinn is such a great â€“ I mean, I canâ€™t think of â€“ Iâ€™m really trying â€“ Iâ€™m trying to pick the favorite here.
Kyle Nolan: Well, Iâ€™m really looking forward to these last two episodes of the season. Thanks.
Rob Corddry: Thank you. I hope you like explosions.
And here’s what the rest of the folks on the call asked about…
You guys have an all-star cast. What do you think attracts theses talented folks to an 11 1/2-minute show?
Rob Corddry: Mostly just because I think we have a good reputation for being a fun show to work on, which is the only reason weâ€™re able to keep this all-star cast and also have the same crew for five years because, you know, nobody gets paid a lot and it doesnâ€™t take a lot of time and â€“ proportionately. And itâ€™s just â€“ it is a fun place to work.
And also, Iâ€™m like, my philosophy in life is basically just do cool stuff with people who arenâ€™t dicks. And so, you know â€“ and then you end up just kind of conducting your whole life that way and not being a dick yourself and then attracting â€“ I find myself surrounded by wonderful people all â€“ you know, most of the time. And it just seems to like happen that way. Everybody is a bit pretty supportive community these days kind of blocking the reputation that comedy has for all being broken jerks.
The script and story lines can be just ridiculous. How much of it would you say is original and how much is really inspired by hospital dramas? I recently revisited that musical episode of Greyâ€™s Anatomy [and it was] asking to be mocked.
Rob Corddry: Oh, god. Every year, somebody is like you really have to do a musical episode. And over my dead body that will happen. Itâ€™s just too on the nose. You know what I mean? We donâ€™t â€“ I think after the probably the first or second season, we stopped drawing from that specific genre and just started basically, you know, using TV as our â€“ you know, parody in TV in general, TV shows and TV show conventions.
And most of the jokes are about like kind of messing with television conventions that the casual viewer will also understand or understand by watching it. And like â€“ you know, and thatâ€™s also just being a 15-minute show helps that. But I agree like I canâ€™t watch â€“ I canâ€™t watch any of that crap, I really canâ€™t. And I donâ€™t think David Wain has ever seen an episode.
Is there a specific scene that didnâ€™t make it into the season that you really wanted to or any other story lines that you maybe didnâ€™t do this season that you would like to maybe move into next season?
Rob Corddry: Oh, my goodness gracious. [These are the] worst questions, because I canâ€™t remember what I had for lunch yesterday. But I â€“ just looking over it right now like a document that Iâ€™ve got, no, not really. I mean, the only thing I can think of is that sometimes when we are writing or when weâ€™re getting Michael Cera in to record the P.A. announcements, weâ€™ll pour over. We have this master doc from years and years.
But really, like I did this with my to-do list as well. If you have something on your to-do list for more than like a month or so, youâ€™re not going to do it. Get rid of it. And like itâ€™s the same with â€“ the same with these jokes like this is a joke weâ€™ve been on â€“ itâ€™s been on the joke sheet for three years. Weâ€™re not doing it. Letâ€™s kill it. And so there are those episodes that keep coming up.
But itâ€™s also interesting that I canâ€™t even think of them right now. Theyâ€™re that uninteresting.
How did winning an Emmy change everything for you guys?
Rob Corddry: It changed â€“ it changed nothing really in terms of money. You know, there is that like sort of rumor and maybe this happens in Network TV or something where you get an Emmy and immediately your price tag goes up. That does not happen on a show like this.
But you know, but purely because also they are like, â€œWell, go do something else, man. Weâ€™re having as much fun as you are.â€ You know, like I said before, if youâ€™re in this for the money, youâ€™re doing the wrong show. But I think mostly…
Do they give you a pizza party or something?
Rob Corddry: I think they are â€“ they give us very nice gifts like some really nice [bottles of alcohol]. But like I think â€“ I think what has changed the most is that in a larger sense, if the industry is now at least recognizing this kind of â€“ not just short form comedy in a â€“ as a category, but also just like that whole idea of what my sort of family â€“ our family of comedians are doing right now. You know what I mean?
Like thereâ€™s â€“ itâ€™s weird because you see us all over the place on TV, but no one can say, â€œOh, thatâ€™s Adam Sandlerâ€™s group or thatâ€™s Will Farrellâ€™s group or thatâ€™s, you know, thatâ€™s sort of comedy family,â€ because thereâ€™s no real centerpiece of it. And so I think because now I think Emmyâ€™s and articles start acting as a centerpiece for a group that people can go, â€œOh, that is also an entity,â€ even though itâ€™s more of a like community than it is spearheaded by someone.
And so like I think â€“ I think itâ€™s a map. I think itâ€™s drawn more attention to our â€“ and itâ€™s our comedy, but itâ€™s â€“ and it went on time because, you know, [inaudible] by early 40â€™s. Itâ€™s almost over. Itâ€™s almost over for me.
Are you already looking ahead to next season?
Rob Corddry: Yes, yes, in a very general way. Weâ€™re â€“ you know, itâ€™s going to be â€“ weâ€™re going to wait, and usually we shoot it in December and January, and weâ€™re going to wait until next â€“ the beginning of next summer or spring to start writing it just because â€“ I think if we cranked another one out right now right after we finish the first one, I mean, this last one that I really feel like maybe weâ€™re â€“ weâ€™ll be tapped. And Iâ€™m just afraid of that. And so weâ€™re going to wait a little bit and get excited. Weâ€™re going to get excited to do it again.
And then weâ€™ll â€“ then the ideas really start coming. But now we just have like wouldnâ€™t it be cool if dot dot dot, you know, conversation going.
How did both the real-life set change for this past season and also the fictional venue change to Japan help in freshening up the show a little bit or at least sort of making things different for you guys?
Rob Corddry: Well, it certainly did that. You know, the genesis of that was that we, of course, lost our second hospital. We are â€“ if you want your hospital torn down, let us shoot there, because it will be torn down within the year after we wrapped.
And so we found a hospital. We could have easily rented and shot in a hospital, but they â€“ well, there was always a catch and, you know, either theyâ€™re too expensive or the thing for me was they are often too far away. And if this, as I keep stressing, like a show where people do it every year to have fun, I donâ€™t want to do anything consciously to take away from that like make some travel an hour and a half before, you know, before â€“ (inaudible) dark every morning.
So I think â€“ I think it just is a luxury of doing something like that. Like we thought, â€œWell, why donâ€™t we just do something different like this and like setting the show on an RV base in Japan? Weâ€™ll just get a different set.â€ So I donâ€™t take care of that. But also this is like the only time in our career that weâ€™ll have the freedom to do something this stupid.
And itâ€™s also like the spirit of the show. Itâ€™s like this â€“ I said this before the second season. I was going to just make it Childrens Lawspital and have the same characters, same names, but theyâ€™re lawyers and thereâ€™s no explanation and would do the law â€“ if theyâ€™re to be a law show parody. And thank God we didnâ€™t do that. It just turned into like one episode in Season 4 or Season 3. But, you know, itâ€™s just we have the freedom to like kind of take those â€“ to see we can leap over those sharks.
Last season’s finale had a huge, a huge death with far-reaching implications. Do you expect some more major developments along those lines?
Rob Corddry: Yes, yes. I â€“ one of the working titles of this episode was â€œThey All Die.â€ However, you know, weâ€™re not necessarily going to â€“ weâ€™re not necessarily going to do like do that. But it is a â€“ it is â€“ itâ€™s definitely something weâ€™ve never done before. It is, you know, shocking insert of every way we â€“ there are moments that â€“ I guess, itâ€™s this â€“ it embodies the spirit of the show.
And that like thereâ€™s moments where youâ€™re like why and how are they doing this. Itâ€™s directed by The Daniels, a very, very visual, technical-oriented, young directing team. And a lot â€“ and if you want to have any idea what tonight might be like, go check out some of their stuff on YouTube or something or tomorrow â€“ Thursday night, you know.
So you were up against an Emmy with Ken Marino this year. Was that a friendly competition and was he angry that he didnâ€™t win?
Rob Corddry: It was friendly â€“ absolutely friendly. And I truly would have been just as happy if he had won. Maybe even like â€“ I think thereâ€™s something more satisfying to him winning because for one, I think itâ€™s an amazing show and bring love, and the parody television like Childrens never did. Itâ€™s so funny and so specific. It looks so good, you know, that thatâ€™s the kind of thing I was talking about before like that weâ€™re being recognized. Itâ€™s sort of like a way you can do comedy. And for two of us to get an Emmy as well, that would have been awesome. So it was a little â€“ you know, it was just kind of bitter sweet.
The one [thing] about it was that we were â€“ we were all getting pictures taken as a cast in that big like sort of pic. And one of the photographers was like, â€œOh, Ken, can you go stand near Rob?â€ And I was like, no, thatâ€™s really lame. You just won â€“ youâ€™re trying to like get a picture of us together. You see you can go, you know, [inaudible] story. But I understand it. I was just â€“ that bummed me out.
But, yes, I know he was definitely bummed out, and I would be, too, and Iâ€™m bummed out. And Childrens wouldnâ€™t be what it is if it werenâ€™t for him. And I know that Iâ€™m one of his biggest influences. He idolizes me, so weâ€™re good.
I mean, Iâ€™m akin to him. Make sure you put that in there.
