That nice lull between fall and summer TV has finally come to a close. I hope you enjoyed the break, because the summer primetime gridlock resumes again starting tonight, with at least four returning/new shows added to the schedule and many more to follow next week. Because of that, we’ve got some suggestions to help you navigate tonight’s busy primetime highway.
Tonight, Syfy kicks off its new Thursday lineup with the return of Defiance, followed by the series premiere of Dominion. Dominion is a small screen spin-off of the 2010 film Legion. In the movie, God ordered his angels to bring the Apocalypse to Earth, but the archangel Michael rebelled and helped the humans. The series takes place 25 years later in a town called Vega (formerly Las Vegas), where the war between the angels and the humans still rages on. However, the hope of the humans lies in the prophesy of unknown “chosen one,” who has yet to be revealed.
Tonight’s extended premiere will air with limited commercial interruption. I was able to see a rough cut of the episode, and I really enjoyed it. It’s an action-packed hour that jumps right into the ongoing war, but also sets up the interesting political dynamics of Vega. I look forward to seeing how the battles both outside and inside the walls of Vega play out over the course of the season. It looks like Syfy will have a great block of sci-fi on Thursday nights!
On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” a soldier learns he is the “chosen one,” destined to lead humanity and end the devastating war with the angels once and for all.
Check out the 90-minute series premiere tonight on Syfy at 9/8c.
I’ll also be watching/recording Rookie Blue, Undateable, Gang Related, Defiance, and Rectify.

It’s time for Rookie Blue to return for its fifth season, and let me tell you, it’s an amazing season so far! I’ve been lucky enough to live in Canada and already be a couple of episodes into the season. When we left our favorite police division last episode, Sam had just been shot when he distracted a shooter from shooting Nick. Andy was in the ambulance with Sam and professed her love for him, which made me a little stressed because I really like Nick and Andy together. It’s being set up to be an amazing season, and if you aren’t in love with this show already, this will be the season that does it.
On the first of tonight’s double episodes, “Blink,” Andy and Dov end up in a tense diner hold-up, and Nick ignores being needed at the station and tries to track down Sam’s closest relative. Then on the second episode, “All by Her Selfie,” Andy trains Division 15’s new rookie, but she must quickly show him the ropes or risk him compromising a homicide case.
To see how the division deals with all the hoopla coming their way, tune in to ABC at 9/8c.
I’ll also be watching Hell’s Kitchen, Gang Related, Chopped Canada, and Dominion.
