I can’t believe that San Diego Comic-Con is just 4 weeks away—I have so much to get done before then, and the flood of summer TV shows this week has kept me really busy. This evening’s primetime lineup is a bit lighter than the fast few days, so either catch up on your DVR backlog from earlier in the week, or check out these recommendations Megan and I have for you tonight.
Last week, Defiance returned for the start of its second season, and things were in a bit of a dark place 9 months after the season 1 finale. Alak has taken over running the family “business” while his father is in the prison camp (along with Doc Yewll). Meanwhile, Rafe and the other mine workers aren’t happy about the nationalization of the mines, which had led to them being overworked and underpaid. Elsewhere, Nolan tracked down his lost daughter, Irisa, though something doesn’t seem quite right with her, as she is having visions of herself killing her father. And Amanda decided to accept the Chief of Staff position from the Mayor, but is unaware that he is obsessed with her and has been spying on her using a hidden camera in her bedroom.
What is going on with Irisa? Will Datak get out of prison soon and reclaim his role as the head of the family? Is Kenya dead, and if so, how will Amanda react when she finds out the truth? It looks like this will be a darker, but still very interesting season, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
On tonight’s episode, “In My Secret Life,” Irisa is arrested upon her return to Defiance, but Nolan can arrange her release by capturing those responsible for an explosion that nearly killed Mayor Pottinger. Meanwhile, Stahma decides the only way to stay in control of her family’s criminal enterprises is by ensuring that Datak stays behind bars.
See if Nolan can get the bad guys so Irisa goes free tonight on Syfy at 8/7c.
I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Rookie Blue, Undateable, Defiance, and Dominion.

Rookie Blue is an emotional rollercoaster this season so far, and I’m not sure I can take it. In the first hour of last week’s double episode, Dov and Andy wre at a diner that got held up while they were just there trying to unwind a bit from the hospital. The hold-up was eventually resolved, but unfortunately, it was because of the death of one of the shooters. Meanwhile, Chloe was taking a turn for the worse at the hospital, and Dov wasn’t answering his phone. He finally got the message and raced to the hospital, where she was shocked back to life, and he apologized. Andy admitted to Nick that she told Sam she loves him and that she meant it. Wow. Nick spent the episode searching for Sam’s next of kin, finally locating his sister and bringing her to the hospital. It was an emotional rollercoaster that ended with Frank handing over his badge to keep the heat off the other officers for the whole debacle that went down with the shooting in 15.
The second hour of the episodes had Oliver stepping in as staff sergeant and Andy getting a rookie to train. This rookie, Duncan, is useless. He was snapping selfies and tampering with evidence—it’s a nightmare, and I’m sure this is headed somewhere bad for the division. Chloe admitted to Dov that Wes was controlling, and she’s embarrassed of how she let herself be controlled, which is why she never mentioned it. Sam’s sister warned Andy that he’ll never change and he’ll just keep hurting her. Andy heeded the warning and told Sam she just needed some time to take things slow. I’m not sure where any of this is going, but I’m ready for them to figure out one path or another—either she loves Swarek, or she doesn’t. Personally, I liked her better with Nick, but maybe that’s because I think Nick is incredibly good-looking and like him having more screen time. (Jenny, meanwhile, is exactly the opposite and is totally rooting for “cutie-patootie” Sam and Andy—her words, not mine. 😉 )
On tonight’s episode, “Heart Breakers, Money Makers,” Division 15 is none too pleased to be seizing items that were bought with money earned illegally. Andy and Nick go to a gambling house and arrest the homeowner, but after a suspicious confession, they must get to the bottom of what’s going on.
To see if they can find the truth, tune in to ABC at 9/8c.
I’ll also be watching Hell’s Kitchen, Gang Related, Chopped Canada, and Big Brother.
