This Week on TV – 2/21/21-2/27/21

Welcome to a new week of TV! It’s another great week of TV, so make sure you check it out so you don’t miss anything!

I decided to take out the episode numbers. There are several reasons. One, they are a PAIN to keep up with. Networks don’t change (usually), times don’t change (well, occasionally), but episode numbers change weekly. With approximately 300+ shows to cover each week, it requires a significant amount of time and effort to check multiple sources. Also making it more work are that there are a variety of ways the networks & shows format their episode numbers. CBS does letters before the numbers, some with a hyphen & some without. TruTV does “V” before the numbers. Freeform does things like 3001 for the first episode of season 3. There’s not a lot of rhyme or reason in them all, and unfortunately they don’t always just go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. The episode number is usually the number an episode is filmed, not necessarily the episode that airs. Granted, most of the time (in scripted shows), they are sequential. But others? Not always. So it isn’t just a case of we can simply plug in the next higher number. So…to make it faster & easier on myself AND on those who have volunteered and are helping each week, I just decided to leave them out. 😉

Yearning to find their perfect partner with the help of friends, family, dating coaches, events and apps, will these hopeful romantics’ love lives be hot and steamy or cold and lonely?

Overnight was also the series premiere of 90 Day: The Single Life Pillow Talk on Discovery+. Familiar faces and franchise favorites will return to watch and comment on the splashiest moments in each 90 Day: The Single Life episode, all from the comfort of their own home. And this time around, there will be some familiar faces from the singles’ past dating lives, as a handful of ex-partners provide their own special commentary on the events of each episode.

Overnight was also the series premiere of Mountain Monsters: By the Fire on Discovery+. The AIMS team gathers around a rip-roaring campfire to watch fan-favorite episodes of Mountain Monsters. The bearded brothers add colorful commentary, swap hilarious behind-the-scenes stories and share never-before-seen footage and bloopers.

Originally on the schedule for last week, tonight is the series premiere of Cherries Wild on FOX at 7/6c. Hosted by Jason Biggs (American Pie, Outmatched), this fast-paced half-hour game show will feature two rounds of pop culture trivia gameplay — during which a team of two contestants will try and “Solve the Slots” in hopes of getting one step closer to winning the $250,000 jackpot. At the end of each episode, when they spin the reels on the enormous slot machine, contestants will attempt to capture all five Wild Cherries to win the ultimate prize.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Boiling Point (#101) on BET at 8/7c. Have we come to a moment of reckoning, an overdue awakening on systemic racism? Sparked by the horrific death of George Floyd, protesters took to the streets across the nation, demanding accountability and change in policing. Yet, the current movements against police brutality, voter suppression, segregated schools, environmental racism and mass incarceration unfortunately are not new. For decades, Black Americans have been fighting for America to live up to its ideals. This six-part series, Boiling Point, will explore these powerful through lines that bridge our country’s past and present with each episode exploring dramatic flashpoints in American history — George Wallace’s Stand in the Schoolhouse Door, Bloody Sunday in Selma, the Attica Prison Uprising, L.A. Riots, Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the killing of George Floyd. These events set the stage for the current civil rights battles of today.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Allen vs. Farrow on HBO at 9/8c. A four-part documentary series that goes behind decades of sensational headlines to reveal the private story of one of Hollywood’s most notorious and public scandals: the accusation of sexual abuse against Woody Allen involving Dylan, his then seven-year-old daughter with Mia Farrow; their subsequent custody trial, the revelation of Allen’s relationship with Farrow’s daughter, Soon-Yi; and the controversial aftermath in the years that followed. Once celebrated for their on and off-screen partnership, Farrow and Allen’s lives were irrevocably fractured and their sprawling family torn apart with the public disclosure of the abuse allegations and the vitriolic disputes that followed.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Disrupt & Dismantle on BET at 9/8c. The show follows Soledad O’Brien as she tackles injustices across the nation affecting the Black community, from police brutality to redlining to school to prison pipeline, to the infant mortality crisis fueled by systemic racism, this timely new series will take an active and hard-edged approach to chopping away at the roots of racism. The series focuses on REAL people with REAL problems, looking for REAL action. Through gritty reportage and true vérité moments, as well as raw emotional interviews, and rarely seen archival photos and footage, this series will offer invaluable insights and truly bring viewers along on O’Brien’s journey. In each episode of Disrupt & Dismantle, O’Brien will identify an issue within a particular community, then she will go out into the field and investigate. She’ll immerse herself in the community, identify the problems and the problematic people, then speak truth to power. And, she’ll continue to stir the pot until she not only gets the critical answers but also finds action items that the audience can look to put into motion in their own communities. In addition to extensive on the field interviews with O’Brien, the program features insights from activists, journalists, politicians and thought leaders.

Finally, tonight is the series premiere of Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6IX9INE on Showtime at 10/9c. A provocative docu-series profiling hip-hop artist Tekashi 6ix9ine’s epic rise to notoriety and spectacular fall to convicted criminal. In the three-part series, director Karam Gill (Ice Cold, G-Funk) examines manufactured celebrity through the lens of 6ix9ine’s controversial artistry, personal demons and mastery of social media, as a reflection of our times and the complicity of culture today. The series is narrated by Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul, The Mandalorian).

Tonight is the 90-minute series premiere of Superman & Lois on The CW at 8/7c. After years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world’s most famous superhero, the Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, Teen Wolf) and comic books’ most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, Grimm), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever — dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society. Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, Little Fires Everywhere) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, The Peanuts Movie) could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, Entourage), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark’s first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, Graceland). The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville, as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, Wander Darkly). Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’s father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, Nip/Tuck) looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’s return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when both a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, All American) and impassioned self-made mogul Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner, Tyrant) enter their lives. Following that is a 30-minute “Legacy of Hope” special. The special features sneak peeks and interviews from the cast and executive producers of the new series, plus special guests discussing the legacy of the Man of Steel.

Tonight is the series premiere of Assembly Required on History Channel at 10/9c. Tim Allen (Last Man Standing, Home Improvement) reunites with Richard Karn (Pen15, Home Improvement), both of whom will serve as series hosts and executive producers, marking the 30th anniversary of the pair’s original television debut. Additionally, the duo will be joined by woodworking do-it-yourself YouTube star April Wilkerson who will act as the series’ own resident expert. In this new hourly, 10-episode competition series, Allen and Karn spotlight the best and brightest makers from across the country, as they compete head-to-head, to create mind-blowing builds — everything from a dual all-season ice melter/leaf blower and all-in-one riding comfort mower to a do-it-yourself jacuzzi and BBQ bicycle — which not only pushes each builder beyond their limits but challenges their inner fixer and inventor to build it bigger, better and more powerful.
