TV times 3 (TVx3) Podcast Ep.204

Early this week, I was part of the TVx3 Podcast with Jason (@theTVaholic) & Amrie (@mytakeontv). We talked recent TV news, then chatted about episodes of The Blacklist, Elementary, Ground Floor, Raising Hope, Almost Human, and The Mentalist. Then Amrie talked reality, with me jumping in about one of my favorite reality shows of the last few months, MasterChef Junior. You can listen to it here.

Jason does these podcasts once a week with different hosts joining him, and this was my first time. It was a lot of fun! Kyle & Megan have both done it several times. You can check out the TV times Three site here, with all the previous podcasts. Be sure to check them out! TV times Three.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 11/7/13

I’m still not used to this hour change from Daylight Savings—it’s pitch black by 5pm now! As the days get shorter, at least we have Thanksgiving and Christmas to look forward to. I can’t believe I already started my Christmas shopping earlier this week. At this rate, I’ll be all done before Black Friday! Now that it’s November, that means Sweeps month, with a packed primetime lineup every night, so we’ve got some suggestions to help you decide what to watch.

thereturned117smallLast week, Sundance Channel premiered the new zombie import, The Returned, which originally aired as Les Revenants in France (and is an adaptation of a 2004 film of the same name). In a small mountain town, people who died are suddenly returning as though nothing happened. In last week’s premiere, teenager Camille shocked her mother when she suddenly showed up at the door four years after the bus she was on drove off a winding mountain road. Camille’s parents had separated after the accident but are now forced back under the same roof, and Camille’s twin Léna, with whom Camille seems to share some sort of psychic connection, is also shocked to see her sister, who hasn’t aged in 4 years. Other returnees include Simon (dead 10 years), who’s looking for his fiancee Adèle, and Madame Costa (dead 30 years), who returns to her overwhelmed husband who ties her up, sets the house ablaze, and then jumps to his own death. Finally, there’s the creepy young boy Victor, who doesn’t speak, seemingly has no family, and was the cause of Camille’s bus crash 4 years earlier.

The series is creepy (in a good way) and has a nice blend of drama and mystery. It’s not your typical zombie story with mindless brain-eating creatures rising from the dead. These “zombies” seem perfectly normal, like they just froze and thawed out in the present. All of these character’s lives seem inter-twined, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this whole mystery plays out. How and why have these people returned? How are they connected? And what’s up with creepy Victor—who is he, how long has he been dead, and why was he standing in the middle of the road?!

If you missed the first episode of The Returned, it had been available for free on iTunes and other digital platforms (not sure if it still is), so check for it online and On Demand.

On tonight’s episode, “Simon,” Simon approaches Adèle, but Thomas finds out about his “return”; Camille is unable to fit back in to her family.

Find out what happens tonight on Sundance Channel at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, Parenthood, Glee, Inside the Actors Studio, White Collar, Covert Affairs, and The Greatest Event in Television History.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/26/13

Wow, this has been a busy week for new TV—and there are eight more new and returning shows premiering tonight! This week, I’ve had the advantage of having seen screeners for most of the new series, but starting next week, I have no idea how I’m going to keep up with everything! We’ve got some suggestions to help you decide on what to check out tonight.

elementary926smallTonight, Elementary heads across the pond for the premiere of the show’s second season. I really enjoyed the first season—I was a little skeptical at first, with Sherlock already on airing on PBS, but I was immediately won over. Jonny Lee Miller makes a perfect Sherlock Holmes, and I really enjoy the dynamic Lucy Liu brings as a female Watson. The cases are always interesting, the chemistry between the leads is great, and I always enjoy watching them use their powers of deduction to solve the mystery. I’m looking forward to meeting more of the classic Sherlock characters in tonight’s season premiere.

On tonight’s episode, “Step Nine,” Holmes and Watson travel to London to help a former mentor investigate an unsolved mystery. Meanwhile, Sherlock’s estranged brother, Mycroft, reunites with him and reveals some secrets of his own. Rhys Ifans guest stars.

See Sherlock on his home turf tonight on CBS at 10:01/9:01c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/25/13

The weekend is almost upon us. While most of this week has been pretty light as far as new TV goes, May sweeps is almost here and things are ramping back up. Tonight, there’s loads to choose from, and to help you decide what to watch, we’ve got some suggestions.

Kyle’s Choice

givingyouthebusinesssmallTonight, Food Network is kicking off a new reality series called Giving You the Business. Each week, a CEO will pick four stand-out employees and put them to the ultimate test. While running the business, each employee will be given a series of outrageous challenges to overcome—all while the big boss watches on secretly via hidden cameras. At the end, the CEO will choose the strongest of these employees and award them the ultimate prize—the keys to their very own franchise worth up to half a million dollars!

The series kind of sounds like Undercover Boss meets Chef Wanted—I’m sure the candidates will all have some sort of emotional back-story and we’ll learn how the prize would change their lives forever. While I don’t really need yet another show added to my already-busy TV schedule, this one sounds interesting and I’m looking forward to checking it out tonight.

On tonight’s episode, “Pepperoni with a Side of Chaos,” four employees of Famous Famiglia are given a shot at running their own pizzeria franchise.

See the series premiere tonight on Food Network at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Giving You the Business @ TV.com.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Hannibal, Glee, Tabatha Takes Over, Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, Men at Work, The Graham Norton Show, and Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/31/13

I can’t believe it’s already Thursday—this week has been flying by! Although, it’s been a bit of a struggle keeping up with all this week’s boatload of new TV (when did Mondays and Tuesdays become the new Sundays?!). While tonight seems like an unusually lighter Thursday (at least for me), there’s still plenty of stuff to watch. So let’s get on to what we recommend you check out tonight.

Kyle’s Choice #1

donoharm131smallTonight, NBC kicks off its new Jekyll and Hyde series, Do No Harm. Dr. Jason Cole (Steven Pasquale) is a successful neurosurgeon with a secret—he has Dissociative Identity Disorder. At night, his evil alter ego, Ian Price, tries to come out and take over his body. Cole had been managing to use drugs to suppress his alternate identity, but Price is growing immune to their effects. Now Cole must to try to find another way to control Price and to keep the details of his own life a secret so that Price can’t hurt the ones he loves. The series also stars Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show), Alana De La Garza (CSI: Miami), Ruta Gedmintas (The Borgias), and Samm Levine (NCIS).

This show was a surprise hit for me. When I first saw the description for the series, I thought it was just going to be another boring, unoriginal show. However, when I watched the pilot, I immediately hooked and wanted to see more. It’s sort of like Dexter meets House meets mystery drama. I found it to be very creative and loved the tense twists and turns. And I think Steven Pasquale (who will always be “that guy from Recue Me” to me) does an excellent job at playing both roles.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” after five years of peace, Dr. Cole’s sinister alter ego is back with a vengeance.

Don’t miss the premiere tonight on NBC at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Do No Harm @ Clicker.
