I’m excited because we just got a “Save the Date” for this year’s Syfy Digital Press Tour event in October. Last year was the first time I was invited, and I had a great time. This year, we’ll be headed to Montreal to see the sets of Being Human and the new series Helix. It looks like I’ll be making the road trip along with two other bloggers, so it should be a fun time, with lots of great info to report back. But let’s get to the reason you read this column—our suggestions on what you should check out on TV tonight.
Kyle’s Choice
One new series I’ve really been enjoying is Supermarket Superstar. Each week, three contestants try to get their food product onto supermarket shelves. In the first round, a panel of judges (including Debbi—aka Mrs.—Fields and Chef Michael Chiarello) tastes the contestants’ products and provide some feedback. The contestants then refine their recipes in high-tech test kitchens, while taking into account cost and nutrition. The new products are then given to a focus group, and based on their feedback, the judges eliminate one of the products. Finally, the remaining two contestants work with a marketing expert to design the packaging and branding for their product. They present these to a supermarket buyer, who decides which of the products will move forward to the later rounds of the competition.
I find it fascinating to see how the contestants go about altering their recipes to lower the cost, and then how they go about fixing their branding in order to appeal to more customers. However, the one thing that always bugs me is that there is always some stubborn contestant who refuses to take the advice of the experts, and sure enough, they are usually the one to go home. The exception was last week, where a younger contestant who was too eager to please the judges was eliminated early, while the most stubborn contestant yet managed to win!
On tonight’s episode, “Sauces,” sauces are prepared by a small business owner, a single mom, and a vegan pin-up model.
Find out which home cook goes forward tonight on Lifetime at 10:30/9:30c.
I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Rookie Blue, Hollywood Game Night, Wilfred, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.
