If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/5/12

Happy Hump Day! It’s a big day for me because I just watched the Bones season premiere (what can I say but fantastic and amazing?) and I get to talk to executive producers Hart Hanson & Stephen Nathan. Yay me! 😉 I’d like to welcome JJ to the Remote posts. He’s going to even up the group at two guys & two girls, which will be helpful once the new season starts. 🙂 So let’s get to it. Check out what we think you should be watching tonight. 😀

I’m sad because tonight is the season finale of the last two summer shows on TV Land: The Soul Man & The Exes. It’s been a great season for both. On The Soul Man, we were introduced this season to ex-R&B singer Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine (played by Cedric the Entertainer), his wife Lolli (played by Niecy Nash), daughter Lyric, father Barton (played by Everwood’s John Beasley), and brother Stamps (played by What I Like About You’s Wesley Jonathan). The entire family is fantastic, and the chemistry is terrific. When Barton retired from preaching, Boyce retired from singing and took over as preacher at his father’s church. There’s been conflict between the two because Barton has been having a hard time letting go of the pulpit, but you can feel the love between not only them but the entire family. I’ve really enjoyed it and was thrilled when I learned it has been renewed for a second season.

In tonight’s episode, “Momma’s Home,” Barton’s ex-wife Della (played by the incomparable Loretta Devine) arrives in St. Louis while the town is experiencing a blackout; Boyce counsels Barton and Della, and things take an unexpected turn. Lolli begins to suspect that she is pregnant. Stamps realizes it is time for him to grow up.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/8/12

Less than a week ’til my kid starts high school. It doesn’t seem possible, I swear. What also doesn’t seem possible is that fall TV is right around the corner, but it is. I’m glad because, even though my DVR is full of stuff I need to watch, I’ve been missing some of the regular season shows something fierce! As for tonight, there’s plenty on to choose from, so to narrow it down, we’re going to give you our recommendations on what you should be watching. 🙂

There are lots of comedies on Wednesday nights this summer that make me laugh. One of them is TV Land’s The Exes. I really enjoy everything about it. One of my favorite episodes to date, though, had to be last week, when Holly realized after spending so much time with her pregnant assistant (who is so tiny, she looks like she swallowed a beach ball. lol) that she was ready to be a mother before it was too late. At first, the guys tried to find a donor for her, but when none of them worked out the way the guys had hoped, they each secretly (from each other…) volunteered their services. Of course, Holly realized in the end that she wasn’t ready to give up on love, so she froze some eggs, just in case, but watching the guys try to win her “uterus” was hysterical.

On tonight’s episode, “Lovers and Strangers,” Holly’s office crush, Paul, returns after recovering from a heart attack. Meanwhile, Stuart hires a cleaning lady to keep the apartment together, but she quickly turns Haskell’s life upside down. Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) & Paula Jai Parker (Let’s Stay Together) guest star.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/DVRing Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy, The Soul Man, Top Chef Masters, Retired at 35, Go On, Restaurant Impossible, and the 2012 Olympics.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/1/12

Happy hump day!! I know most of you who read this site are American, so congrats on the USA showing at the Olympics—but I’d like to shout out to the Canadian team. We may not be raking in the medals (4 at the time I type this), but we have had a few personal bests, and I am so incredibly proud of the girls gymnastics team—Amazing job, girls! Now that I’ve boasted about my home country, let’s see what you should be watching tonight.

I don’t usually enjoy real crime shows, but Final Witness has been keeping my attention from the very beginning. The way they tell the story from the perspective of the victim is amazing and often heartbreaking. The very first episode with the story about the girl who murdered her own family was incredibly well told, to the point that I was in tears. Okay, so that doesn’t sound like feel good television, but seeing the criminals come to justice always softens the drama of it all. It’s really worth your time.

On tonight’s episode, “A Mother’s Revenge,” the mother of a young man who was found dead in a field is the driving force behind the investigation that brings his killer to justice and reveals a hidden world of gang rivalries and ruined lives.

To see justice realized, tune in to ABC at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Final Witness @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/DVRing Baby Daddy, Top Chef Masters, and the 2012 Olympics.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/20/12

It’s halfway through the week and I am watching Hell’s Kitchen while I write this up. So fun to watch Chef Ramsay blow his top at these surprisingly inept chefs. On another topic, MightyText is cool. I can use my computer to send text messages to phones. Very handy when I need to text my kid. LOL Ok, enough about me. Read on to find out what we think you should be watching tonight. 😀

Tonight is the series premiere of The Soul Man, and I’m excited because it looks really fun. From the creators of Hot in Cleveland, The Soul Man revolves around Cedric’s character, Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine, an R&B superstar-turned-minister who takes over as preacher of his father’s church. Niecy Nash (Reno 911) stars as the reverend’s wife, Lolli. The pilot also features John Beasley (Everwood) as his father, Wesley Jonathan (What I Like About You) as his younger brother, and Jazz Raycole (My Wife and Kids) as his daughter. The character of Reverend Boyce originated on a second season episode of Hot in Cleveland, in which Cedric guest-starred.

The cast looks fantastic, the previews have been funny, and it’s on TV Land, which has had some big hits for me in terms of original comedies. I’m really looking forward to this one.

On tonight’s episode, “Lost in the Move,” an R&B singer gets a calling to become a minister, so he gives up his superstar lifestyle and moves to St. Louis to become a preacher in his father’s church. The family soon notices that some of their possessions were lost in the move.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/1/12

Happy February! Yesterday was a pretty slow night of TV for me. Tonight isn’t hugely full (I really miss all my dramas!), but there are still some great shows on. What do we think you should watch? Check out our picks below, and then let us know what you are planning to watch. 🙂

The new episodes of Royal Pains the last couple of weeks have been great. Hank and Divya took a while to get back to normal, and while things may not be perfect yet, they are better than they were after she first told him about being the one to screw up with their patient. And how freakin adorable are Paige and Evan?! I really love them together, and last week, when Evan was freaking out because he had hives, was hysterical. I’m so not digging Jill at the moment, though. If she’s going to go, then just go, dammit. but if she’s not really going, show more angst between her & Hank about her leaving, so when she DOESN’T leave, it’s a bigger payoff. And finally…how heartbreaking is the storyline with Ed—I mean, Jack (played by the adorable, fun, talented Tom Cavanagh, who is one of my biggest TV crushes)?

On tonight’s episode, “My Back to the Future,” when a back problem limits Hank’s ability to treat patients, Evan hires Dr. Van Dyke as a temporary replacement.

Don’t miss it tonight on USA Network at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Royal Pains @ Clicker.
