Kyle’s Choice
Tonight, the new series Blood Drive premieres on Syfy. The show is set in the dystopian “future” of 1999 Los Angeles, where food is scare, water is rationed, and the cost of oil has skyrocketed. Folks have modified their vehicles to run on one commodity that isn’t in short supply…human blood. Each year there is an underground road race with a prize of $10 million dollars. However, only the winning team/individual gets the money – the participants who come in last place in each leg of the race are eliminated…permanently. As the series opens, loner Grace (Christina Ochoa, Animal Kingdom, Matador) and police officer Arthur Bailey (Alan Ritchson, Blue Mountain State) find themselves unwittingly forced into participating in the deadly contest, and their fates are bound to one another. In charge of the race is eccentric emcee Slink (Colin Cunningham, Falling Skies), who likes to have fun but takes his rules of the road seriously. Meanwhile, as Officer Christopher Carson (Thomas Dominique, Undercover) looks for his partner, he discovers something sinister going on in the city.
Blood Drive comes from Grindhouse and features their signature pulpy, exploitative, over-the-top style. Viewers will know within the first five minutes of tonight’s premiere if they are going to love or hate this show – there is no in-between. The violence, gore, and sex is excessive but done in a fun, campy way. There is also this ridiculous, almost random use of giant black censor bars throughout the episode. In the premiere, we meet the eclectic bunch of teams in the race – each with their own unique look, personality, vehicle, and weapon. The series seems like it is going to be this ridiculous (in a good way), over-the-top, deadly version of Cannonball Run. There is also this bigger mystery of what is going on in the city and who is really running things. If you’re a fan of the Grindhouse style, this series looks like it will be a fun ride and perfect summer entertainment. However, this show is most certainly not for folks who get easily offended by graphic sex and violence – even if it is done in comic/graphic novel like way (like Spartacus).
On tonight’s premiere, “The F-cking Cop,” in the dystopian future of 1999, Arthur Bailey is the last good cop among a horde of corrupt officials, living in desolate downtown Los Angeles. He’s about to get caught up in a race where the cars run on human blood and the last participant to arrive at each checkpoint has their head explode.
See if this new show is for you tonight on Syfy at 10/9c.
I’ll also be watching/recording Fargo, Kingdom, MasterChef, The F Word, and Big Star Little Star.
