Tonight is the series premiere of Hood Adjacent with James Davis on Comedy Central at 9/8c. Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, one block away from where “shit goes down,” James Davis shares his perspective on the world he grew up in and the world he grew up next to. This show explores contemporary urban topics through a unique, hybrid style of comedy that bridges the gap between urban and mainstream comedy.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Hair Goddess on TLC at 10/9c. The show follows Christina Oliva, the epitome of a self-made woman as she opens her first salon in Manhattan. At 18-years-old, this born and bred Staten Islander launched her own hair extension company from her parents’ garage. After only three years, Christina had fostered enough clientele to open a salon of her own on Staten Island, eventually hiring her sisters and cousin as employees. With her family behind her one hundred percent, she has built a world-renowned hair empire and now she’s ready for the next level – a salon in the heart of Manhattan. She quickly learns that Manhattan is a cut-throat world, vastly different from her tight-knit community at home on the island. Viewers follow Christina and her close-knit Italian-American family as they face the many challenges of running a salon, including the delicate balance between business and personal life, financial worries, and difficult employees.

Tonight is the series premiere of Battle of the Network Stars on ABC at 9/8c. The ’70s and ’80s television pop-culture classic is revived when it returns to television this summer. This is a nostalgic throwback to the original series where TV celebrities blended athleticism with hilarious antics. The 10-episode summer event will pit teams of current and classic TV stars from multiple eras and different genres against one another in a variety of athletic games. Viewers can look forward to seeing a fresh take at some of the classic show’s sporting “events” like Tug o’ War, the Obstacle Course and the Dunk Tank. In the original series, TV stars representing the three major networks at that time — ABC, CBS and NBC — teamed up to compete in physical challenges that were originally broadcast on ABC starting in 1976 and continuing for 13 years. Legendary sports broadcaster Howard Cosell hosted all but one of those 19 episodes, commenting on the action with a semi-serious version of the style for which he was famous. On the new version, 100 TV stars from 14 different network and cable companies will take their athleticism to a new level. The summer event will pit teams of current and classic TV stars from multiple eras and different genres against one another in a variety of athletic games. Viewers can look forward to seeing a fresh take at some of the classic show’s sporting events like Tug of War, Archery, Kayak Relay, Obstacle Course and Dunk Tank, all from the site of the original series, the beautiful campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. The hosts for this new series are Mike Greenberg and Joe Tessitore of ESPN; Cassidy Hubbarth and Cari Champion of ESPN will be the sideline reporters; plus Super Bowl 50 winner DeMarcus Ware and MMA fighter/Olympian Ronda Rousey will be the team captains.

Tonight is also the complete first season premiere of Gypsy on Netflix at 3:01AM/2:01AMc. The series profiles Jean Halloway (Naomi Watts), a well-to-do Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life and bustling therapy practice. Over the course of 10 episodes, she begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people closely connected to the patient’s that walk through her door every day. As the borders of her professional life and personal fantasies become blurred, she descends into a world where the forces of desire and reality are disastrously at odds for her and those around her. In addition to Watts, Gypsy also stars Billy Crudup as Jean’s husband Michael Halloway, Sophie Cookson as Sydney, Lucy Boynton as Jean’s patient Allison, Poorna Jagannathan as Jean’s coworker, and Karl Glusman as Jean’s patient Sam.
