Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, ABC kicks off the new 10-part legal thriller The Fix, from series creator/executive producer Marcia Clark (best known as the lead prosecutor for the O.J. Simpson trial). Eight years ago, LA district attorney Maya Travis (Robin Tunney, The Mentalist) suffered a devastating defeat in the courtroom when Hollywood star Sevvy Johnson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Lost, Oz) was acquitted for the double murder of his wife and her best friend, despite all the evidence seeming to prove otherwise. Afterwards, Maya abruptly left the public eye and headed to Washington to live a quieter life with cowboy Riv Allgood (Marc Blucas, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), but she is still haunted by the faces of the two women she was unable get justice for.

Sevvy is once again in the news when his latest girlfriend is found murdered. Maya’s former partner, Matthew Collier (Adam Rayner, Tyrant), lures Maya back to the DA’s office to consult on the case and hopefully get justice this time around. Also working on the case are District Attorney Alan Wiest (Breckin Meyer, Franklin & Bash), CJ Emerson (Merrin Dungey, Big Little Lies, Alias), and the ambitious young deputy district attorney Loni Kampoor (Mouzam Makkar, Champions, The Exorcist). Sevvy once again claims his innocence and even has the backing of his deceased wife’s son Gabriel (Alex Saxon, The Fosters). However, that doesn’t stop him from re-hiring hot-shot defense attorney Ezra Wolf (Scott Cohen, The Americans), the man who got him acquitted the last time.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. One can’t help but make comparisons to the O.J. trial and wonder if this is a way for Marcia Clark to get a little justice. Tonight’s episode does a great job of introducing all of the characters and their back stories and showing how both sides are starting to prepare their cases. It’s very interesting to see the manipulations and tricks being plotted by both sides. I expect that this one investigation/trial will play out over the course of the 10-episode season, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be other twists and personal drama along the way – tonight’s premiere features some unexpected turn of events. I am definitely on board to see how this all plays out and to see if Sevvy is actually innocent this time around or not.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” District Attorney Maya Travis returns to Los Angeles for another chance at justice after movie star Sevvy Johnson is suspected for another murder eight years later.

Meet all the players of this very public trial tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Resident, 9-1-1, and Arrow.

Jenny’s Choice

Oh my gravy. It’s been too long since we last saw a new episode of 9-1-1. At Christmas, in fact. When we last left off, lots of big things were happening. Besides the actual cases, which were fun. (Neighbors competing to see who could put up the best Christmas lights/display which led to one getting into a troublesome situation, a guy who worked at a shipping company accidentally getting boxed up and shipped – Hah – and a mistletoe stunt with a drone leading to a woman getting her nose chopped off. Ouch!)

But let’s see… On the personal front, there was a lot. Eddie finally decided to give his son what he really wanted: his mom back. When Athena asked Bobby to move in with him, he hesitated, which caused her to think he didn’t want it, but then he actually asked her to marry him, and she said yes! And finally, Chimney tried to lift Maddie’s spirits by getting her a Christmas tree…and while at the lot, he met a nice guy who helped him pick out a tree. He then ran into the same guy at the store while he was buying her a DVD…and while WE know the guy who is now stalking Chim is Maddie’s estranged, abusive husband, Chimney doesn’t. Not good, people. Not good. But it does lead into some great drama starting with tonight’s spring premiere!

On tonight’s episode, “New Beginnings,” Bobby meets Athena’s parents for the first time and Maddie attempts to end her marriage for good, causing Doug (guest star Brian Hallisay) to insinuate himself even deeper into Chimney’s life. Meanwhile, a tanker carrying a tiger shark crashes on the freeway and a gas leak in a plastic surgeon’s office happens mid-surgery.

To see how it goes for Bobby, Chimney, and the others, tune in to FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Man with a Plan, Spring Baking Championship, The Enemy Within, The Fix, & Winner Cake All.
