Tonight is the 1-hour series premiere of The Righteous Gemstones on HBO at 10/9c. Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals) returns to HBO with The Righteous Gemstones. This comedy series tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work. McBride will star as main character Jesse Gemstone, who sees himself as a maverick in the ministry game, taking what his father, Eli Gemstone, has built and expanded it for a more modern audience. Joining McBride in the cast is John Goodman (also seen on HBO in David Simon’s Treme) as Gemstone’s father Eli; Vice Principals’ alum Edi Patterson as Jesse’s sister Judy; Jesse’s younger brother Kelvin (Adam Devine of Pitch Perfect); Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) as Jesse’s wife Amber, a former journalist now devoted to the church; Tony Cavalero (School of Rock) as ex-Satanist Keefe Chambers, saved by Kelvin; Tim Baltz (Drunk History) as Judy’s fiance, BJ; and Greg Alan Williams as Martin Imari, a conservative Kenyan, and Eli’s right-hand man.

Tonight is the (sort of) series premiere of I Ship It on The CW at 9:30/8:30c. (Technically, this is season TWO. Both season one and season two first aired on The CW’s streaming site, CW Seed. They have now chosen to air season two on its own on The CW. I don’t believe you have to have watched season one to understand season two. I think it’s a bit like American Horror Story, in which each season is a different story with some of the same characters or actors or whatever. Also, this is a musical comedy, much like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.) Ella (Helen Highfield) is a fangirl and aspiring writer. While working at a boutique shipping agency, Ella writes fanfiction for her favorite TV show, Superstition, and dreams of one day making her fantasies a reality. She works with her boyfriend, the charming yet albeit-vanilla Tim (Riley Neldam), and lives next door to him with her best friend Winnie (guest star Jazz Raycole). One fateful day, Ella’s actress friend Sasha (Yasmine Al-Bustami) places a flower delivery order to the showrunner of “Superstition” and Ella seizes the opportunity to not only make the delivery but to visit the set of her favorite show resulting in Ella throwing caution to the wind and quitting her job to become a writer’s PA on Superstition. Her fangirl fantasies being to collide with reality in unexpected ways, in both her creative life and love life.
 
Tonight is also the series premiere of Family Restaurant Rivals on Food Network at 10/9c. Across America, family-run restaurants serve up some of the country’s best dishes, and they all think their recipes are better than the rest. Valerie Bertinelli hosts as families compete in challenges requiring them to overcome real-life restaurant curve balls to please the most intimidating judges in the food world. The teams prove that anything can happen when family pride and a $10,000 prize are on the line.

Overnight last night was the complete first season premiere of Hyperdrive on Netflix. Elite street racers from around the world test their limits in supercharged custom cars on the biggest, baddest autootive obstacle course ever built. The show is hosted by Lindsay Czarniak, Michael Bisping, Mike Hill, & Rutledge Wood.
 
Overnight last night was also the complete first season premiere of This Way Up on Hulu. From Britain’s Channel 4 comes This Way Up, a pin-sharp and poignant new six-part comedy written by and starring actor and comedian Aisling Bea (The Fall, The Comedy Lineup). Bea plays Aine, a whip smart English-as-a-foreign language (TEFL) teacher trying to pull her life back together after a “teeny little nervous breakdown,” as her sister Shona, played by Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Pulling), worries, not only about her younger sibling, but also about her own life choices. The TEFL school where Aine teaches brings together a room full of characters also trying to find their own hope, direction and happiness in this messy world. Joining Bea and Horgan are Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show, Halal in the Family) in the role of Shona’s boyfriend Vish, Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Outlander, Game of Thrones) as Richard, father to one of Aine’s students and Indira Varma (Patrick Melrose, Luther, Game of Thrones) playing Shona’s colleague and confidante Charlotte.

Overnight last night was the complete first season premiere of the Canadian Rust Valley Restorers on Netflix. Old-school auto collector Mike Hall, his pal Avery Shoaf, and son Connor Hall go the extra mile to restore retro cars — and hopefully turn a profit.
