Phoebe’s Choice
Last year, I commented that the big reveal at the end of season three of Mr. Robot was that Esmail did not expect to have to write a third season. That the genius of seasons one and two were self-contained and these additional attempts to finish the tale in a logical and satisfactory way were an exercise in futility. Like adding rooms onto a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece just ’cause you got contracted for a sunroom and a back deck.
This season has been fun because we love Robot, Elliot, and Darlene. Because we want to see White Rose’s plans, whatever they may be. But the in-depth hacker/Infosec elements have taken a back seat as they struggle to tie it all up before the finale. Last week in a scene that feels like it belonged in season 2, Tyrell whacked Elliott’s Dark Army surveillance guy with a hammer in his van parked outside. They took the body upstate, intent on burning him and the van. Darlene was caught breaking into a car by drunk Santa, but she offered to drive him home for leniency. At a gas station, Tyrell & Elliot lost the van because the Dark Army guy was not dead yet.
The guys walked through the woods to get to town for a phone signal. Darlene had a dark heart to heartless with Drunk Santa as she chaperoned. FBI agent Dom got attacked by her online date, who was a Dark Army soldier. Or no, was it all just a dream? Arriving at Drunk Santa’s house, he realized he didn’t drive today, so yeah, Darlene did steal a car. In the woods, Tyrell saw certain doom, but Elliot pressed on in hopes to warn his sister. In a twist of fate, the guy in the van was only a mile down the road, in a crash. After shooting at them, he killed himself, but Tyrell was hit. He urged Elliot to defeat White Rose and then sat down in the snowy woods to die. It’s not what it once was, but it’s pushing toward resolution.
On tonight’s episode, “405 Method Not Allowed,†Dom has no fun on Christmas; Darlene and Elliot give a run-around; Krista plays hooky.
Find out why Dom has no fun tonight on USA Network at 10/9c.
I’ll also be watching, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Batwoman, Supergirl, Get Shorty, and Watchmen.
