Kyle’s Choice
Tonight, the Disney Channel is airing an all-new animated special set in the world of The Lion King. The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar is the one-hour preview for a new animated series coming to Disney in January. Simba (Rob Lowe The Grinder) and Nala’s (Gabrielle Union, Being Mary Jane) cub Kion (Max Charles, The Strain) is growing up and wants to prove that he’s ready to follow in his father’s footsteps. The Lion Guard has been protecting the Pride Lands for ages and has always been comprised solely of lions. However, now that he is the leader of the group, Kion wants to assemble a more diverse group of animal friends, each with his or her own talents, to protect their home land from hyena Janja (Andrew Kishino) and his sidekicks, Cheezi (Vargus Mason) and Chungu (Kevin Schon).
The new Lion Guard consists of cheetah Fuli (Diamond White, Haunted Hathaways) who brings her speed, hippopotamus Beshte (Dusan Brown, About a Boy) who brings his strength, cattle egret Ono (Atticus Shaffer, The Middle) who brings his excellent sight, and honey badger Bunga (Joshua Rush) who brings his bravery. Some other familiar faces will also return – Kion’s sister Kiara (Eden Riegel, Youthful Daze), wisecracking meercat Timon (Kevin Schon) & warthog Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), baboon Rafiki (Khary Payton, Teen Titans Go!), red-billed hornbill Zazu (Jeff Bennett), and the ghost of Mufasa (James Earl Jones). The cast of characters also includes Kiara’s lioness cub friends Tiifu (Sarah Hyland, Modern Family) and Zuri (Madison Pettis, The Fosters), and Janja’s minion vulture Mzingo (Jonny Rees, Hawaii Five-0).
While I never watched Disney’s previous Timon and Pumbaa animated spin-off series, I am really looking forward to checking out this new spin-off. I was a big fan of the original Lion King movie, and watching the trailer for tonight’s special, I was quickly reminded of why. It looks like this new show recaptures the humor, drama, and action that made that film franchise so great.
See if this new show will take you back to your childhood tonight on Disney Channel at 7/6c.
