A couple months ago, HBO and director Stephen Soderbergh teamed up to produce the Mosaic app, which provides a unique interactive story experience on iOS and Android devices. The mobile app allows users to interact with the cinematic murder mystery by selecting which character’s perspective to follow at various points in the story. Soderbergh has now taken the footage that was shot for this joint venture and has edited it into a more traditional, linear TV format. The 6-part Mosaic limited series will air on HBO across the next five nights.

The psychological thriller tells a story of love and murder in a small town, where each character has his or her own version of the events to tell. As the series opens, popular children’s book author/illustrator Olivia Lake (Sharon Stone, Agent X, Basic Instinct) crosses paths with potential suitor Eric (Frederick Weller, Banshee, In Plain Sight) and handyman/aspiring artist Joel (Garrett Hedlund, TRON: Legacy). The series also stars Jennifer Ferrin (Time After Time, Falling Water), Beau Bridges (Bloodline), Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman), Devin Ratray (The Tick), James Ransone (Bosch), Jeremy Bobb (Godless, The Knick), Michael Cerveris (Gotham, Fringe), and Maya Kazan (Sleepy Hollow, The Knick).

I was a huge fan of Soderbergh’s previous cable series, The Knick, and so I’m really looking forward to seeing his latest work. Mosaic has a stellar cast, and I’m always down for a good murder mystery! I have already set my season pass to check out this limited series.

On tonight’s premiere, “Meet Olivia Lake,” children’s author Olivia Lake attends a lavish party, during which she notices handsome bartender Joel and offers him a place to live; wealthy financier Michael O’Connor enlists a con man to convince Olivia to sell her picturesque property.

Catch the series premiere tonight on HBO at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Good Doctor, Better Late Than Never, The Resident, Supergirl, and The Alienist.

Tonight, FOX airs the first half of the two-night premiere of the new medical series The Resident, which takes a look at the darker drama happening behind-the-scenes at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. The series follows recent Harvard Medical School graduate, the wide-eyed young Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal, Halt and Catch Fire), as he embarks on his new internship at the hospital. As he arrives on the first day, Dr. Pravesh learns that his supervisor will be hot shot third-year resident Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry, Gilmore Girls), who has a reputation for being a bit of a jerk. As Dr. Hawkins uses tough love to teach his new intern the ropes, Dr. Pravesh quickly discovers that for these doctors, the ethical lines for treating patients are blurred.

Meanwhile, Dr. Conrad constantly finds himself dealing with problems caused by the Chief of Surgery, Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson). The aging chief refuses to acknowledge that he’s no longer the sharp surgeon he once was. He often puts patients at unnecessary (and sometimes fatal) risk and then uses his power to intimidate the other doctors into covering up his mistakes. Other staff members include Dr. Conrad’s former flame, nurse Nicolette “Nic” Nevin (Emily VanCamp, Everwood), and intelligent, gifted surgeon Dr. Mina Okafor (Shaunette Renée Wilson, Billions), who has no bedside manner and little patience for the chief. The series cast also includes Moran Atias (24: Legacy, Tyrant), Merrin Dungey (Big Little Lies, Alias), and Melina Kanakaredes (CSI: NY).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. The series is fast-paced and mixes interesting medical cases with some really engaging character drama. It doesn’t seem like this series will be a simple case-of-the-week type medical procedural. A lot of the focus is on the drama going on behind the scenes at this hospital as the doctors struggle to fix the broken system, starting with how to deal with this chief who is putting lives in danger while hiding behind his notoriety, fame, and power. The series looks beautiful and has a very cinematic feel to it, making use of some creative camera angles, including a scene shot from the POV of the patient. The cast is great, and I really look forward to seeing what happens next, when the series moves to its regular time slot tomorrow night!

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” on his first day as an intern, an idealistic Dr. Devon Pravesh faces the harsh realities of medical care; resident Conrad Hawkins teaches him unconventional methods for treating patients; Conrad goes head-to-head with Dr. Solomon Bell.

To meet the new doctors and nurses, tune in to FOX at 10/9c.

Note: Tonight’s premiere will follow the football game, so be sure to pad your DVR recording for the inevitable sports run-over.

I’ll also be watching/recording Worst Cooks in America, The Alienist, Crashing, and Counterpart.

Tonight, FX kicks off the second installment of its award-winning American Crime Story series, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. This time, the limited series is based on Maureen Orth’s book “Vulgar Favors” and follows the events of the brutal 1997 murder of international fashion icon Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez, Bright, Carlos) in front of his Miami Beach mansion, at the hands of deranged psychopath Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss, Glee). The series takes a look at the manhunt for Cunanan – which actually started long before he claimed his fifth victim – and the cultural biases that allowed his killing spree to go on for so long. The series also stars Penélope Cruz as Gianni’s sister Donatella and Ricky Martin as Gianni’s longtime boyfriend Antonio D’Amico, as well Judith Light (Transparent), Mike Farrell (M*A*S*H), Dascha Polanco, Max Greenfield (New Girl), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story: Freak Show), Cody Fern, and Jon Jon Briones.

While I was extremely familiar with the details of the O.J. Simpson case portrayed in the show’s first season, I don’t really know anything about the Versace murder, so I look forward to some unexpected twists and turns this season. Tonight’s premiere is really well done, opening with operatic-like recreation of the murder before jumping back to 1990, where we see Cunanan first meet Gianni, followed by the first glimpse into investigation of the murder. I expect that over the course of the season, we will learn more about what led Cunanan to go on his killing spree, while also seeing how he was ultimately apprehended. I was extremely impressed by Darren Criss’s portrayal of this psychopath. Cunanan is a poor con-man who is constantly making up stories about himself, his family, and his wealth. While he comes off as a pompous ass at times, he somehow still manages to win people over and weasels his way into exclusive invite-only situations. There is one moment in tonight’s premiere where I was really blown away by Darren Criss’s performance – he manages to convey Cunanan’s complete lack of emotion, empathy, and any guilt for what he has done, with one simple gesture. I am really looking forward to seeing more of Criss’s performance, learning more about Cunanan’s motives, and seeing how the manhunt plays out.

On tonight’s premiere, “The Man Who Would Be Vogue,” the eyes of the world turn to Miami Beach, Fla., following the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace.

Follow the investigation into Versace’s murder starting tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Modern Family, American Housewife, Match Game, The Amazing Race, The Blacklist, The X-Files, 9-1-1, Riverdale, Corporate, The Magicians, Happy!, and The Librarians.

I am thoroughly enjoying FOX’s new airline comedy LA to Vegas. The writers have come up with some fun, creative scenarios in the first couple episodes, and the cast is hilarious, often making me laugh out loud. I’m mainly recommending tonight’s episode because of the guest star…Dermot Mulroney. He instantly feels like a natural part of this world as Captain Dave’s rival, Captain Steve. It’s a very fun episode. Plus, since I constantly mix up the names of Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney (and apparently I’m not the only one, because SNL did a sketch about it a few years back), it’s great to finally see these two together on screen for the first time…even if I did mix up their names once again while typing up this column!

On tonight’s episode, “Two and a Half Pilots,” in Captain Dave’s absence, a rival is assigned to cover the flight’s route; Artem and Nichole help Colin plan his son’s birthday party.

Meet Captain Dave’s rival tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, Fresh Off the Boat, black-ish, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, This Is Us, The Mick, The Flash, and Black Lightning.

Last week on NCIS: LA, the team had to investigate a dead man when napalm was found at the crime scene. Yes, napalm. Not something the team had to deal with every day! That led them to a young woman – in high school – at a coffee shop, after security cameras caught her speaking to the guy multiple times. At first they thought he was going to use napalm to blow up the high school, since the girl was being severely bullied. In the end, it turned out he was in cahoots with another guy and the guy’s father to blow up an underground natural gas storage that had a leak. They wanted to blow up LA’s natural gas supply so they have to convert to wind and solar power. Thankfully the team stopped them just in time. (The team minus Deeks, who had to go back to LAPD for mandatory active shooter course.)

This is going to be a big week for the team. After being gone the whole season (minus some time we’ve spent in her POV overseas), Hetty is back this week when the team finds a clue and go after her. Thank goodness. I like Mosley, but I’m tired of the Hetty being gone and being held hostage story line. Either bring her back for good or let her retire. But dang, let’s move on and let the characters move on!

On tonight’s episode, “Cac Tu Nhan,” while Hetty is being tortured by her captors in Vietnam, Eric and Nell find a clue to her whereabouts, prompting the team to organize a rescue mission with very little information. Carl Lumbly & John M. Jackson guest star.

See if the team can find and rescue Hetty tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games & Worst Cooks in America.
