Kidding Season Finale Recap

Last week marked the end of a phenomenal first season run by Showtime Originals tragicomedy Kidding. I have seriously and consistently raved about this one since it premiered a few months ago. It stars Jim Carrey as Jeff Piccirillo, who is the star of a popular children’s TV program called Mr. Pickles’ Puppet Time. The show is overseen by Jeff’s dad, Sebastian Piccirillo, and also features the puppet design work of Jeff’s sister Deidre. Deidre has been dealing with a fractured relationship with her husband Scott. Early in the season, their daughter Maddy had seen her piano teacher jerking Scott off one afternoon. Jeff himself has been dealing with a personal life that has been spiraling into darkness for the past year since his son Phillip was killed in a car accident. Phillip was survived by his parents & his twin brother William. The main theme of the show is Jeff dealing with the pain of this loss. For us the audience, it has been all torturous and unexpected delight.

Central to most episodes are Sebastian, Deidre, William, Jeff, and his ex-wife, Jill. Jill is now seeing a new boyfriend, Peter, who works with her at the hospital where she works as a nurse. Jeff has secretly bought the house next to her house but has never really moved in. William has found a new group of friends in his middle school who have gotten him into doing weird pranks and smoking marijuana. The whole family has tried to intervene, but he’s adjusting to his brother’s death in his own way.

I recently stumbled across the best Friday night TV that 2018 has to offer, and it’s called Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus. Yes, that Mike Judge – the creator of King of the Hill plus Beavis & Butthead. He’s got a new documentary-type show in which he animates interviews he’s done with rock stars to make stylized historical episodes. The first season covered a variety of old timey folk and rock acts, but season two has a specific genre focus: Funk. The premiere episode covered George Clinton, and then last week they aired part 1 in a two-part pair of Rick James episodes.

As James is dead, most of the stories are told by members of his supporting band, though as Judge points out in the first moment of the episode “Rick James got Neil Young high on marijuana before he’d ever even met Crosby, Stills or Nash.” Before delving into his rise to stardom, they recount an evening in Arkansas where their tour bus faced a militant raid, with snipers on the roofs, that they refused on account of a lack of warrant. When the cops came for James at the concert venue, they had a Spartacus moment, where everyone was yelling “I’m Rick James” until the cops left them alone and the show could start. James was veryyyy pro-pot and also had some strange ideas about “pimping his crowds.”

After establishing what a wild showman he was, Judge rewound us to his childhood in Buffalo, where we learned that his mother worked for the local mob as a cog in their gambling operations. He was raised Catholic along with 7 brothers and sisters. When the draft was pulling men his age over to Vietnam in the army, James opted to join the Navy, which saw much less action in that war. While enlisted, he started to get into local music bands and was AWOL when he founded the core of his first band. After spending 30 days in holding, he was discharged, and he got to work on being a musician full-time. His aspiration was to be the black Bowie or the black Jagger. He felt the world was ready for a black man in as extravagant and famous a rock persona as those two, and sure enough within a year he was signed to Motown Records.

He got the other band members to go along with his flashy ideas on how they should dress on stage, with long braids and tight spandex suits covered in glitter. They didn’t like it initially, but James sold it to them as a macho thing, and they were sure getting laid plenty. They recounted how the inspiration for “Superfreak” came about after Berry Gordon flew the band out to L.A. to record an album. A set of attractive white girls were walking down Hollywood Boulevard dressed just as James does: as a cowboy in all white. James hollered out the limo window where the girls could find him, and sure enough later that day the girls were in his hotel room. The events of that evening inspired the song that would be the #1 smash hit off their album Street Songs.

The episode ended on a sad note though. Once MTV launched they were more accommodating to white artists like James’s old pal Neil Young and they hardly gave him any airplay at all, despite having a platinum record and several hits. Hopefully tonight in part II of this set of episodes, he’ll finally get his moment on MTV.

On tonight’s episode, “Rick James Pt. 2,” Funk star Rick James rides high on top of the music world in the mid-’80s, but between his rivalry with Prince, crusade against MTV and run-ins with the law, he falls further under the influence of cocaine.

Check it out tonight on Cinemax at 10/9c.

Today, YouTube released the new 10-episode futuristic sci-fi thriller Origin, from director Paul W.S. Anderson. The series follows a group of strangers who were on their way to recolonize a planet five light years away, when something happened and they woke up early. Now they find themselves in deep space, with no signs of the ship’s crew and only a small fraction of the passengers who were supposed to be on board. They begin to search the ship and discover strange and creepy things, which only brings up more questions. There is something mysterious and deadly on board, and the passengers start to question if they can really trust one another.

I checked out the first two episodes, and by the end of the premiere I was completely sold. I love this kind of tense thriller, and I can’t wait to learn more about these characters and see the mystery unfold. Things get incredibly freaky by the end of the first episode and continue to amp up even more in the second episode, becoming a consistent stream of jump scares. If I had to describe the show in one sentence, it would be The Thing in space. However, the series does take some breaks from the tension – each episode utilizes flashbacks to explore one of the character’s backstories, looking into who they were and why they ultimately jumped at the chance to erase their past and to start over with a blank slate and a new identity on a new planet.

The cast is great. It includes Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Natalia Tena (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones), Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder (Mozart in the Jungle, Zoo), Fraser James (Holby City), Philipp Christopher, Nina Wadia, Madalyn Horcher (Gracepoint), Siobahn Cullen, Adelayo Adedayo (Timewasters), and Wil Coban. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got a chance to participate in the press room for the series. Unfortunately, due to a tight schedule, I only got the chance to speak with one pair of actors – Tom Felton & Sen Mitsuji – before they were whisked off for their panel. You can find my video from the roundtable Q&A at NoReRuns.net.

Check out the complete first season of Origin now on YouTube.

I’ll also be watching/recording Survivor, Riverdale, and Stan Against Evil.

Among other things, one of South Park’s trademark moves over the last two decades has been really over-the-top holiday episodes, and last week’s Halloween episode completely delivered! There were two initial plot threads that they eventually sewed together wonderfully, and the whole thing was narrated by future Kenny, in a meta-irony move. For years Kenny’s gimmick (other than reincarnation) has been how he’s always wearing that orange hoodie and we can’t make out all the foul-mouthed stuff he says. So hearing him reminisce about the “last great Halloween” like he was Kevin Arnold on The Wonder Years was hilarious.

The one plot centered on how these free scooters that had popped up all over town terrorized and infuriated the usually calm guidance counselor Mr. Mackey. He dragged the thousands of free “leave ’em anywhere” scooters into the woods, but they all came back the next day. The only thing you needed to use the scooters was a smart phone, as they were powered by a phone app. Which was seriously impacting Kenny because he was too poor to have a smart phone. All of the other kids his age would be using the free scooters to expand their trick or treating range, and he’d be left in the proverbial dust.

When Kenny went to Mr. Mackey with his problem, they both realized the phone app was their biggest issue, so they set out to destroy the local cellphone tower. Another funny thing they did with Kenny for this episode, as I guess they had to, was make his voice a lot less muffled as he and Mr. Mackey “saved the day” so to speak. It was South Park in a very self-aware moment, to say the least. Once the tower was destroyed, Kenny rejoined his best friends, who could no longer use the scooters, and they went on to have the “last great Halloween” together. For costume selection, I vote that Cartman won for his rad rendition of Snake Plisken, main character in the Escape From… films. This was an instant classic that won’t be enough to stop them when they try to #CancelSouthPark; (That hashtag, btw, is a joke that they run on Twitter to send you extra South Park promo tweets!)

On tonight’s episode, “Time to Get Cereal,” when dead citizens start popping up all over town, the boys realize they need Al Gore’s help. The boys are willing to do almost anything to save the town and themselves but it may just be too late.

Don’t miss another fun episode tonight on Comedy Central at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, the season finale of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, American Horror Story, and Stan Against Evil (which I just discovered and am catching up on now).

Shameless Midseason Finale Recap

I don’t know if the UK version of Shameless, which inspired the American iteration is any good, but I do know that I love Showtime’s version like Gay Jesus loves LGBTQ rights. After the midseason finale in October, the show is on hiatus until January 20th. Recent announcements from Emmy Rossum (Fiona) & Cameron Monaghan (Ian) about each of them retiring from their roles on the show leave the fandom worried about the future. But season ten has already been contracted, and we will go on without them. Perhaps this will see Frank returning to the folds of the major family arcs more often, whereas the first half of this season he felt like a third-tier character. Also I expect Liam, who finally started talking last year at like age 8, to continue to emerge as a central character. He’s about the age that Karl was when the show first started. Notably, he’s also smarter already at age 9 than full-grown Karl will ever be.

One fun story that will still be in play when they return in January is Frank’s budding romance with clinically insane psychoanalyst Ingrid Jones (played by the always marvelous Katey Sagal!). The last few episodes, she had been off her meds and having a torrid love affair with Frank that led to a few knife attacks and lots of broken glass. In Ian’s last episode, he went back to prison for blowing up the van as a publicity stunt when leading the youth Gay Jesus movement. The switchback happy ending was that Mickey, who we presumed was in Mexico, was in the same facility and arranged to be Ian’s cellmate. Wow. Small world, I guess, but those two will be happy off-screen, we can presume. Lip has a new love interest and is a sponsor now for a younger AA member. He’s arguably the most “got their shit together” Gallagher of the season so far. Though, Debbie has also been fairly responsible, while raising Frannie, working as a welder, and testing the waters of a lesbian relationship. Karl has a militant new girlfriend who is working on helping him get into West Point, and poor Liam is back in public school after a year’s worth of a free ride at a fancy private school.

The biggest spectacle coming into the mid-season finale last month was watching Fiona crash and burn. For a year and a half, she had her life going so well. She’s a realtor on the rise who owns a diner & an apartment building. She’s also invested in a large retirement home development project, which was where things started to go awry. New inspections came up and she needed to throw an additional 25k at the project, but her investments were already overleveraged and she couldn’t get another loan. Finding out that her bf Ford was actually married was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and she wound up getting into a drunk driving accident and totaled her car.

Debbie helped her salvage some money for the vehicle and also put Ford in a giant metal pillory so that Fiona could blast his bare ass with paintballs as revenge for his deception. So Debbie is really on point lately. Her financial situation was balanced out by Max, her partner in the retirement home project, who offered to buy her other buildings in a way that let her stay in the investment. Because she lost the apartment building, she had to move back into the Gallagher house with the rest of the family. So her last seven episodes on the show have her back in the neighborhood. I can’t wait to see how crazy it all turns out. We miss Ian already and will value our last few months with Fi.

Don’t miss it when Shameless returns to Showtime on January 20.
