After the super long hiatus, Ash vs. Evil Dead is finally back, folks. And if chop ’em up slapstick gore-fests starring Bruce Campbell are your thing, then your fix is on Starz Network Sunday nights this spring!

At the end of last season, Ash had defeated the demon trying to take over earth with the Necronomicon. As such, season three opened with Ash happily opening a hardware/dildo store in his hometown of Elk Grove, where he was finally hailed as a hero. But even as the store was having its Grand Opening day, a girl was on an “Antique Evaluator” show asking for the worth of the book, bound in human skin, she found “in the mud.” The appraiser of course read from it, and wham bam thank you ma’am, the unholy powers of darkness had been reawakened. Almost immediately, (a freshly blonde) Ruby showed up to claim the magical Book of the Dead that she helped write eons ago.

Same time that this was going on, the runes that showed Pablo’s possession through season two had returned, and at the Elk Grove high school, the team mascot had seemingly been possessed and was harassing two girls with detention. At the celebration for his store’s opening, he was confronted by former stripper Candace “Candy” Barr, who claimed to be his wife “from that one night” years ago.

Ruby performed a blood ritual with the Necronomicon (which almost made me and her both puke) as Candice informed Ash that not only did they have a daughter together, but that she was at the high school under duress and they must save her at once. They found her and her friend Rachel in the music classroom. But sad thing was – Rachel had already become a Deadite, who launched into intense instrument warfare, attacking them with every musical implement in the room. In the midst of these attacks, Candice died. Finally, though, Ash stomped her face to pieces with the super sharp strings of a harp. The gore factor here was “over-the-top-sliced-to-jelly-face-9.9-outta-10.” This show is not for the weak of heart.

After they slayed Deadite Rachel, the mascot reappeared just in time to get killed by Kelly, who had tracked them down along with her new pal, and Ash devotee, ancient Sumerian: Dalton. The gang was all reunited, and Ash decided to light up the stashed doobie he’d been saving, which he promptly offered to his 16-year-old shell-shocked daughter Brandy Barr.

On tonight’s episode, “Booth Three,” Ruby dons a new disguise in order to bond with Brady after she gives birth to something evil; Kelly comes back with a friend who leads the search for The One; Ash comes to realize that his daughter is being targeted by evil forces.

To see what disguise Ruby takes on, tune in to Starz at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

Tonight, NBC kicks off the new dramedy Good Girls, which follows three suburban mothers who decide to fix their financial problems by robbing a grocery store. Beth Boland (Christina Hendricks, Mad Men) discovers that her husband, car dealership owner Dean (Matthew Lillard, Twin Peaks, Bosch), has been both cheating on her and has been lying about the family’s devastating financial situation for years. Her younger sister Annie’s (Mae Whitman, Parenthood) ex is demanding custody of their daughter Sadie (Izzy Stannard, Brad’s Status) and she needs money to hire a lawyer. And friend Ruby (Retta, Parks and Recreation) and her security guard husband Stan (Reno Wilson, Mike & Molly) are in desperate need of money to pay for their daughter’s kidney treatments. Fed up with their situations, the women break bad and rob the local grocery store where Annie works, hoping to get $30K to ease their money problems. However, their situation becomes a lot more complicated when they discover they got more than they bargained for and are now wrapped up in a dangerous situation involving the head of a local crime gang, Rio (Manny Montana, Graceland).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. The cast is great and really play well off one another, and the pilot does a good job of establishing the characters’ relationships and motivations. The series feels much like Big Little Lies meets Breaking Bad. You’ve got the dark secrets these suburban moms are dealing with that ultimately cause them to do really bad things in the name of helping out their families. The series has this nice blend of drama and humor. The women forced to do some unexpected things, and while they initially have good intentions, things quickly get out of hand and desperation takes over. I look forward to seeing what other twists and turns happen over the course of the season and if/how these women are about to get out of the situation they’ve managed to get themselves into. Will be see them go full-on Walter White by the end of the season, or will they find a way to still remain good people at heart?

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” a trio of desperate suburban moms decide that being good never got them anywhere and rob a supermarket in order to get a little cash to help them and their families out. Unfortunately, the supermarket is already the territory of a local gang, and the women soon find themselves in hot water.

Meet the three moms who take on more than they bargained for tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

Tonight, Cinemax’s over-the-top action/adventure spy drama Strike Back returns for its fifth season on the network, with an all-new cast. The series follows the exploits of Section 20, a top-secret branch of the British Defense Intelligence service that takes on risky missions around the globe. This isn’t the first time the series has changed things up. The protagonist of the first season – which Cinemax aired as Strike Back: Origins several years after the current series premiered – had a different protagonist, and he passed the torch to Sergeants Stonebridge and Scott in the first season of the Cinemax series. Now, with Strike Back: Retribution, it’s time for the torch to be passed once again to new cast of characters.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every iteration of this series thus far. When the series moved to Cinemax, they really amped up the action and also added some humor. I look forward to meeting the new team, seeing what threat Section 20 must take down, and what exciting missions await the soldiers this season. It looks as though the series will be keeping the same US/UK dynamic of the previous four Cinemax seasons – partnering up US Joint Special Operations Command Sergeant Samuel Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson, The Shannara Chronicles) with British Army/ex-United Kingdom Special Forces Sergeant Thomas “Mac” McAllister (Warren Brown, Luther) – while also expanding out the team a bit this season. The rest of the main characters include British Army Captain Natalie Reynolds (Roxanne McKee, Dominion); Lance Corporal Gracie Novin (Alin Sumarwata, Neighbours) of Australian Army Special Operations Command; British Army Colonel Adeena Donovan (Nina Sosanya, W1A, Marcella), the leader of the revived Section 20; and Lance Corporal Will Jensen (Phil Dunster, Murder on the Orient Express) of the British Army Intelligence Corps.

On tonight’s premiere, members of Section 20 are called back into action when a new threat puts the world in danger.

Check out the season premiere tonight on Cinemax at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Absentia, Altered Carbon, Child Support, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Graham Norton Show.

Last week, we finally saw the resolution to the winter finale on The Brave, when Jaz was captured by the bad guys at the hotel in Tehran. Of course the team didn’t abandon her. They figured out where she was being held, but because there was no way to get in to get her, they decided to have Patricia leak the fact that Jaz was indeed a US spy. Then when the bad guys moved her to where they would publicly execute her, the team stopped the van, killed the bad guys, and rescued Jaz. Unfortunately, when the border crossing they thought would be empty was actually heavily guarded, Hossein sacrificed himself, thereby letting the team cross safely.

Patricia is in big trouble… It’s quite illegal to give out the names of US operatives, and even though she did it to save Jaz, and it did exactly what they’d hoped, she’s still in trouble. I haven’t heard about Anne Heche leaving the show, though, so she can’t be out that long… Of course, the show has only been given 13 episodes, meaning tonight’s plus two more, so there isn’t much left for her to be in or out of unless they renew it for season two, which we’re still waiting to hear. This is such a great, fun show, and it needs all the eyeballs it can get, so please, please tune in tonight, and share the word!

On tonight’s episode, “Grounded,” with Patricia out of commission, Noah is at the helm of the D.I.A. when FARC revolutionaries take control of a flight in Colombia. When negotiations mean life or death for the passengers on board, Hannah must make her return to the field.

See how it goes with Noah in charge and Hannah back in the field tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Man With a Plan, Kids Baking Championship, Superior Donuts, 9JKL, & Scorpion.

Tonight, the third season of The Magicians kicks off on Syfy. As the second season came to a close, Penny learned that he had “cancer plus” and was dying and only had three weeks to live. Meanwhile, in Fillory, Eliot and Margo started to execute their plan to take back their kingdom. However, in exchange for helping her re-enter Fillory, the Queen of Fairies took Margo’s right eye. Eliot and Margo threw a party to lure brother gods Umber and Ember into their trap. After Ember killed his own brother, Quentin, with Julia’s help, used a sword to kill Ember. They believed they had saved magic, but when Alice heard the news, she was concerned that Ember and Umber’s parents, the creators of the universe, would send something to avenge the death of their children. Sure enough, the literal plumber of the gods cut off the supply of magic to Brakebills, the library, and Fillory.

In Fillory, the fairies used this lack of magic as their opportunity to forcibly seize and occupy the castle. At Brakebills, Dean Fogg resorted to teaching his students magical theory, in hopes that magic might still return. Meanwhile, Julia sneaked onto campus and showed Quentin that she could still create a small spark, which gave him hope. Finally, Joseph the monk appeared to Alice, warning her that The Lamprey was coming after her.

Will the group find a way to restore magic to Brakebills, Fillory, and the rest of the world? Can Julia’s spark of magical ability be harnessed into more? How long can Penny survive by staying in the library, immune from the passage of time? And will magic return in time to find a cure for his cancer? What is after Alice, what does it want, and can it be stopped? And how are Eliot and Margo going to take back Fillory from the Queen of Faries? I’ve already checked out tonight’s wonderful season premiere. I had forgotten how much I had missed this show’s great mix of humor, sarcasm, action, and drama. There is an especially fun scene between Eliot and Margo that made the TV fan in me so giddy. The premiere sets up several interesting quests for the characters that are sure to intersect over the next few weeks. It looks like we are in store for another thoroughly entertaining and magical season!

This past summer I got the opportunity to talk with some of the cast/creators of the series at San Diego Comic-Con. You can check out my press room Q&A videos at NoReruns.net. http://www.noreruns.net/2017/08/17/magicians-press-room-san-diego-comic-con-2017/

On tonight’s premiere, “The Tales of the Seven Keys,” Quentin tries to find someone who can bring magic back; Julia explores her small, but significant, gift; Eliot and Margo struggle under the hostile fairy occupation; Kady searches for a way to heal Penny.

See how the season starts tonight on Syfy at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching The Goldbergs, Modern Family, American Housewife, Match Game, The Amazing Race, The Blacklist, The X-Files, 9-1-1, Happy!, and The Librarians.
