Kyle’s Choice

I always enjoy when sitcoms do holiday-themed episodes, but the Halloween ones are always my favorites. TV characters always seem to have the most creative costumes – way more creative than anything you typically see from your local trick-or-treaters or at an adult costume party. Plus, the writers usually have a lot of fun mixing in some spooky and supernatural storylines into these normally pretty-grounded shows. Tonight, the entire ABC Wednesday night comedy lineup is Halloween-themed. as it goes from the 80s to the 90s and the present day.

In The Goldbergs, “A 100% True Ghost Story,” Beverly scores a bargain on four paintings, but something supernatural is causing them to be destroyed; Barry decides to throw a huge Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed party against Erica’s wishes. Barry Bostwick, Steve Guttenberg, & Stephnie Weir guest star.

Then, in Schooled, “Run, Rick, Run,” Coach Mellor is excited to celebrate Halloween in a couple’s costume with Julie, but his plan might be derailed by Principal Glascott; CB tries to scare the students into not tormenting each other during the school’s annual Halloween parade.

In Modern Family, “The Last Halloween.” Phil is determined to scare Claire on Halloween; Gloria feels self-conscious about her age when someone correctly assumes she is Jay’s wife; Mitch and Cam go to the WeHo Halloween Carnival after Lily decides to go to her first Halloween party alone.

And finally, in Single Parents, “Welcome to Hell, Sickos!” the kids head to the school for a spooky Halloween celebration with Douglas; Will has a stressful night trying to do too much; Poppy and Angie throw a Halloween party at Douglas’s house to try to prove to themselves that they are cool moms.

Check out the Halloween fun tonight on ABC starting at 8/7c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/29/19

Jenny’s Choice

On the last new episode of The Conners, Darlene’s secret relationship with David finally came to light, and it spelled bad news for her relationship with Ben. After Darlene got a flat tire, she texted pretty much everyone, and the first two to show up were Ben and then David. She got out of that awkward spot with neither man the wiser (or so she thought), but when chatting with Jackie (who’s kind of been an annoying witch about the whole thing, actually) about it later, Darlene realized that her decision about the two men was already made – her text to Ben had been long, sweet, talking about needing to cuddle, while her text to David had been short and to the point about needing a ride. Nothing sweet or romantic about it. She decided to go with David to his therapy appointment (which he’d been after her to do for a while) and break up with him there so he had the therapist’s support right away. But before she could tell him, he actually broke up with her, stating that she never “heard” him, that she hadn’t since they were 15 (and what an emotional flashback to the OG series!) and he needed and deserved more. Good for David. Darlene actually got emotional and realized it hurt, even though it was needed, because it closed the door on their long-standing relationship for good. She then decided to confess to Ben, but Ben figured it out at the tire standoff, and he was just finishing up a breakup letter to Darlene when she got to work to tell him. He broke up with her but didn’t fire her…which can only lead to some interesting times ahead at the office! (And I do hope they eventually get back together. He’s a good guy and is good for her.)

As for the others in the family… Harris has a new friend, Odessa, and they were headed out to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This was before Darlene’s lie blew up in her face, and Harris blackmailed her into letting her go out in a skimpy outfit. Odessa is not exactly an ideal friend for Harris – tattoos, smelling like pot…and indeed, though Darlene told Harris she better not smell it on her later that night, Darlene and Odessa smoked pot that night in Harris’s room. Becky walked in, reminded Harris they had an addiction problem in the family, and took away their bong (or whatever. I don’t do it, so I don’t know if that’s what it was or not. LOL).

Speaking of Becky… She told Louise that she wanted the open bartender position, but Dan secretly told Louise not to give it to her. Becky noticed and got upset. Dan said he was worried about her because of her problem with alcohol, and she reminded him she hadn’t had a drop since finding out she was pregnant with the baby. Things got heated again between them later, when he arrived home to find that Becky had gathered all of his beer and was in the process of throwing it all away. They found peace, and Dan realized he had to trust Becky. It’s really nice seeing them grow closer this season.

On tonight’s episode, “Nightmare on Lunch Box Street,” Jackie learns that the Chinese restaurant is going out of business and sees an opportunity to reopen the Lunch Box, but she’s caught by surprise when she uncovers a secret. Meanwhile, Mary gets upset when a woman assumes she is adopted, and Darlene continues to deal with her complicated love life.

See how the Conner family celebrates their first Halloween without Roseanne tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

Phoebe’s Choice

Last week, the new HBO show, Watchmen, started off tense and kept the mood up through most of the episode. It began in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921 during the Tulsa Race Riots. That’s a totally real historical event – in response to black people standing up with weapons to stop an African American boy from being lynched, the white people massacred and air bombed the burgeoning, segregated Greenwood neighborhood. That really happened. The show followed one young boy’s escape as many adults around him got slaughtered by white rage. Then we FFWD about 90 years. I got it wrong in my last blog about this show. It’s not 2019 there; it’s about 2008 when we picked things up at a traffic stop in rural Oklahoma outside Tulsa.

The cops all wore yellow masks on their faces to protect their identities and required approval from HQ to access the gun that stayed locked in their center console. When this officer believed he had stopped a member of the rebellious Seventh Kavalry (because he saw a Rorschach mask in the glove), he requested his gun. It took several questions to get the gun authorized however, and then the system glitched, giving the Kav member enough time to get his assault rifle out and riddle the cop’s car and chest with bullets.

Strong open.

Next we met our central protagonist for this series, bakery manager Angela Abar. She used to be a cop in the United State of Vietnam (Because of course…) but was injured in an incident referred to as the White Night. On that night, many cops were attacked by the Seventh Kavalry, who opposed the government and Redfordations, or reparations for victims of the Tulsa Race Riots in 1921. On the ride home from school, Angela and her son had to park while a shower of tiny squid splattered all over the road and car. Despite this front as a baker, Angela was in fact a masked vigilante named Sister Night, whose outfit sorta looks like Captain Marvel meets Sister Act. It looks badder than that descrip, but you know I’m right. #FightMe #YouWont

Once she learned about the shooting, she grabbed a guy that she was certain was a Kavalry soldier. A precinct-wide meeting decided to enact a 24-hour release of all firearms to the cops. After Looking Glass determined that the guy Sister Night nabbed was for sure a 7th Kav member, she brutally beat info out of him. They learned that the recent shooter was holed up in a local cattle ranch. What ensued was a bloody great beef splatter battle set to what could only be described as Knight Rider muzak. The Chief of Police used Night Owl’s flying machine to stop the last escaping criminals but sacrificed the vehicle to do it.

After dinner with the Abar family, the chief was later ambushed on a dark country road. Angela got a threatening call and a location. When she showed up, it was an old black man in a wheelchair. He was the boy who escaped the riots in the opening scene!!! Also though. Sad face. The chief was hanging from the tree, dead as doornails. Outro with: more Knight Rider music.

This show is sick AF, and I can’t wait to see how it pans out. Oh yeah, also in there? Ozymandias is still obsessed with Dr. Manhattan, though John has yet to make an appearance.

On tonight’s episode, “Martial Feats of Comanche Horsemanship,” as Angela relives haunting memories of an attack on her family, she detains a mysterious man (Lou Gossett Jr.) who claims responsibility for Tulsa’s most recent murder. Elsewhere, an original play is performed for an audience of one.

Don’t miss the sick fun tonight on HBO at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/24/19

Phoebe’s Choice

I’m not sure how great the rest of the content is, but Shudder’s 2019 iteration of Creepshow has been a rock-solid rendition of the franchise. The 1982 movie was both Stephen King’s first original screenplay and an homage to Golden Age horror comic books like Tales from the Crypt & The Vault of Horror. In the stead of the legendary Crypt Keeper, this show has the Creep. The Creep is similar to the Keeper, in that he is a skeletal undead being in tattered robes prone to cackling maniacally, but the Creep never has any dialogue, so copyright intact, I guess? Each episode features two horror stories bookended by an appearance by the Creep that is somehow tangent to the tales.

Last week featured “The Companion” & “Lydia Layne’s Better Half.” In the first tale, a young boy named Harry was on the run from his bully of an older brother, Billy. Billy was determined to kick Harry’s ass once again, but the younger brother ducked into an abandoned property at night while being pursued. He pulled a cane out of a gruesome scarecrow, and the beast came to life. Double trouble! Deeper in the house, Harry found a corpse with a note by it. It was the former owner of the farm. After his wife died, he built the giant monster out of bones and a Valentine’s heart his wife had knit. At first he appreciated the company the Companion brought, after a Girl Scout was killed by the monster. The man knew they both must die. After impaling the scarecrow with his cane, he went inside to shoot himself. When Harry used the cane to defend himself, the beast relented, surrendering to whomever wielded it. Harry returned to his home then and sewed Billy to his bed. Lastly, he unleashed the Companion on Billy.

Next we watched as Lydia Lane gave away the big promotion to some other guy, not Celia her secret lover who had cultivated her position in the industry for years. Celia freaked out on Lydia, and a minor scuffle ensued. Celia fell over the couch backwards and impaled her skull on a crystal statue on the table. Dead. Pouring blood everywhere, dead. Lydia decided to try to sneak the body out of the building since everyone else had gone home for the night. Celia’s eyes kept opening, freaking Lydia out as she got her onto the elevator. Then an earthquake hit, stranding the couple in the elevator. The tension in the suspended metal box was like being in an emotional pressure cooker, with Celia’s corpse often opening eyes and eventually hissing Lydia’s name. We had a Tower of Terror freefall moment, but the cables didn’t totally snap yet. Firefighters were in the building and coming to rescue Lydia now. We saw that the crystal stabbed in Celia’s head was a “Woman of the Year” award. Getting the door partially open, Lydia tried to climb out. Celia came to life then and grabbed her hair while her head was still in the box. The cables snapped and Lydia was decapitated. The firemen found Celia in the bloody elevator car holding Lydia’s head in her hands. This show is so sick! Don’t sleep on it, especially this holiday season.

On tonight’s episodes, “Night of the Paw; Times Is Tough in Musky Holler,” a killer gets stranded in a funeral home with a mortician and his monkey paw; a former mayor and his followers who controlled a town through fear and intimidation get a taste of their own medicine.

Don’t miss the creep factor tonight on Shudder’s streaming network at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/23/19

Jenny’s Choice

I’m enjoying the new season of S.W.A.T.. Last week was a good one… The new Lt. Lynch really fumbled the ball when she spoke signed SWAT up for an undercover operation and went to the team with it first before even speaking with Hicks. Not only that, but she talked with and gave the mayor all the details as well, which is a no-no for Hicks. Fortunately, when Chris and Street went undercover in a counterfeit money op to take down (again) a local gang, things went as good as can be expected. No one was hurt, although it looked shaky for a minute, and they were able to nab all the bad guys and get all the counterfeit money before it could be distributed. But the whole thing left a bad taste in Hicks’s and Hondo’s mouths about Lt. Lynch.

On the personal side of things, Hondo’s parents were still at odds (no surprise, really), but Hondo convinced his mom to come out to the car show for both Daryl and Hondo himself, not for his dad. She did, and I could tell it meant a lot to Daryl to have her there, since he’d worked hard helping Hondo’s dad with his car. We’re still wondering what Senior’s health issue is, since he coughed up blood a couple of episodes ago. When will we (and more importantly, Hondo) find out? Gotta be something serious, I’m guessing… As for the not-so-serious, Chris helped smooth the way for Street and Molly Hicks, even though she didn’t look entirely happy about it. She’s trying so hard to be happy with Kira and Ty, but obviously she has some feelings for Street. I want her to be happy with them. I love that odd relationship. I don’t want her with Street, simply because on this show, they won’t keep them together (I mean, look at how it went with Hondo & Jessica…). Guess we’ll see…

On tonight’s episode, “Immunity,” Deacon’s family gets caught in the crosshairs of a drug cartel when he and the SWAT team aim to bring down its leader, a former foreign rebel force leader running drugs in plain sight via a local flower market. Also, Hondo receives troubling news regarding his father, and Tan is forced to go before an internal review board due to his girlfriend’s indiscretion.

See if Deacon can protect his family tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Limetown, Chicago Med, The Goldbergs, Schooled, Chicago Fire, Guy’s Grocery Games, Nancy Drew, SEAL Team, Single Parents, & Chicago PD.
