Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, FOX kicks off the fun new reality competition series LEGO Masters. Ten teams of two compete for a grand prize of $100K and the title of “LEGO Masters.” Each week the teams are given some huge new challenge and must utilize their LEGO-building skills to win over the judges, who will eliminate the team that fails to impress them. The teams are an eclectic bunch of folks from around the country, including bearded buddies from Portland, a cop and a technical cell phone consultant from the East Coast, cosplayers from Texas, a Puerto Rican father/son team, brothers from New Jersey, artists building together for the first time, married thespians, office managers with big hair, newlyweds from Florida, and 20-something buddies who resemble Superman and Clark Kent, one a soldier and the other a LEGO educator.

Hosting the competition is the hilarious voice of LEGO Batman, Will Arnett, who takes on a persona similar to that of his animated character – self-obsessed, sarcastic, and overly confident. And deciding who stays and goes each week are certified LEGO BrickMasters and professional LEGO designers Amy Corbett and Jamie Berard. I was quite impressed with what these builders were able to come up with.

In tonight’s premiere, the contestants are given 15 hours to build a theme park that includes some motorized element to it. Even if I was given twice that, I don’t think I could come up with anything close to their amazing creations. The show is so much fun, especially the banter and antics of Will Arnett as he talks with the contestants and judges. And when it’s time to show off the builds for the judges, the show brings them to life in an entertaining way via LEGO Movie-like animation. I am really looking forward to seeing more of this series, especially since in future episodes, Will will be joined by some great celebrity guests.

On tonight’s premiere, “Dream Park Theme Park,” the pairs of contestants are introduced; each duo must craft one section of a theme park, and when the sections are combined, they create an impressive theme park world.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/3/20

I’m like most people… I love love love Girl Scout cookies. I also love Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother), so when I heard there was a new show on Food Network called Girl Scout Cookie Championship, hosted by Alyson and judged by another fave of mine, Katie Lee, as well as Nacho Aguirre (from Spring Baking Championship) and a rotating panel of guest judges (like Carla Hall, yay!), I jumped on it. During each episode, five bakers transform Girl Scout cookies into show-stopping edibles pieces of art. The results include a giant double barrel toasted marshmallow cake made with Girl Scout S’mores, a ten-layer Do-si-do/Peanut Butter Sandwich red velvet globe cake complete with peanut butter buttercream, and Thin Mints transformed into a three-tiered blueberry mint glacier cake.

On tonight’s episode, “Galactic Transformations,” five professional bakers transform iconic Girl Scout Cookies into dozens of cookie pops inspired by outer space.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/2/20

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, immediately following the Super Bowl, FOX kicks off the third season of The Masked Singer. This season of the whosungit compeition series is the biggest yet, with 18 celebrities donning costumes and taking the stage to show off their pipes while the judges and viewers try to guess who is under those masks. Since there are so many competitors this season, they’ve been split into three groups. Tonight, the six members of Group A take the stage – White Tiger, Turtle, Miss Monster, Llama, Robot, and Kangaroo – and one of them will be unmasked. Later this week, during the show’s regular Wednesday night time slot, the remaining members of Group A will return to battle it out.

I checked out tonight’s premiere – though they bleeped and blurred out the identity of the unmasked singer, so I’m really looking forward to seeing who it is! There’s a good mix of obviously seasoned singers as well as first-timers and lots of clues to help viewers try to identify who is under those elaborate costumes. Nick Cannon returns as host, along with the judging panel of Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke. For tonight’s episode, special guest Jamie Foxx joins the panel. In the coming weeks, we’ll meet the rest of the contestants – Group B: Banana, Elephant, Frog, Mouse, Taco, & Kitty, and Group C: T Rex, Astronaut, Swan, Bear, Night Angel, & Rhino.

It’s still very much the same familiar show this season. Though one new thing I noticed is that instead of just displaying photos of the judges’ guesses on the screen, they are superimposing the celebrity head over the masked contestant’s body for a fun visual. I look forward to seeing the new season play out and learning who these celebrities are!

I’ll also be watching/recording Doctor Who, The EE British Academy Film Awards 2020, Worst Cooks in America, The Outsider, Avenue 5, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/31/20

Jenny’s Choice

I have really enjoyed the new Lincoln Rhyme series so far. The cast is really phenomenal, on their own and together. Last week, they were on the trail of what turned out to be two killers who had teamed up to kill using mythology as their inspiration. One of their victims was a wannabe social media influencer who spent more time enthralled with her own face than not, and they came close to killing the girlfriend of a young man who was the son of one of their earlier victims (when he was a kid). Lincoln (who has again lost the ability to wiggle his toes, maybe due to stress from starting back to work? Such thinks Claire, his nurse/caregiver…), Amelia, and the rest of their team figured out who the killers were and tracked down the girlfriend just before she could be killed. Amelia got into a tussling match with the man who was there to kill the young woman, but fortunately Amelia got the better of him and tossed him over the edge of the church balcony, where he landed below on an iron/metal spire. Ouch. Also, throughout the episode, we watched THE “bone collector” killer working with some long human bones, and at the end, we saw that he’d sent one to Lincoln and another to Amelia. It seemed to me like he did something to the bones – like drilled into the bones and injected something, maybe? – but all we saw was Amelia and Claire unbox the “gifts.” Dun dun dun!

Again, I’m really enjoying this. If you’re a fan of procedurals or crime shows, etc, I urge you to give it a shot.

On tonight’s episode, “Russian Roulette,” when a young woman from an insular Russian community who witnesses a murder comes to Lincoln and Amelia for help, the case takes a shocking turn when the mysterious murder is linked to a cold case – the tragic disappearance of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, the Bone Collector’s “secret” is discovered.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/30/20

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, after just four short-but-delightful seasons, NBC’s The Good Place finally comes to an end. Last week, the gang finally made it to the Good Place. Michael was worried he wouldn’t be welcome, being a demon and all, but the committee members whisked him off to give him a job. Meanwhile, the four humans walked into their welcome celebration arm-in-arm, which caused the party space to be an eclectic mix of elements from all four of their ideal celebrations. There was also a green Holodeck-like door that they could go through to see or experience anything their hearts and minds desired.

After Michael signed his contract, the committee members quit, leaving him as the sole person in charge of the Good Place – and things weren’t really as good there as they seemed. At the party, Chidi and Eleanor were also about to learn this fact. Chidi was excited to meet philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria (Lisa Kudrow), but it quickly became clear that something was off with her. It turns out that having an eternity to do and see whatever you want is still an eternity, and eventually you become exhausted. And knowing there was no end to this boredom caused malaise and their brains to just slowly turn to mush.

So Michael and the gang had to come up with a way to fix the Good Place and make things better for all of these folks who had already been there for thousands of years. After thinking for a while, the team came up with a plan– they would create another door. When folks in the Good Place felt that they had had their fill of eternity, they could just enter it and move on. This idea that they weren’t stuck there instantly improved the moral of the residents. It seems like a simple fix, but is that all that is needed?

Tonight, the series comes to an end with a special 90-minute event, including a series discussion with the cast/creators. How will it all come to an end? Will we see how our four humans choose to spend their time in the Good Place? Will they eventually tire of it and want to move on? Will there be yet another twist to this story? I can’t wait to see how this ends, but I am going to really miss this show. It is easily one of my all-time favorites.

On tonight’s series finale, “Whenever You’re Ready,” various conversations occur, between various groups of people. (Such a descriptive and spoilery episode description!)
