Jenny’s Choice #1

Wednesday is probably my favorite night of TV as a whole, especially tonight, though, because my Chicago shows are back! We get the season premieres of Chicago Med, then Chicago Fire, and finally Chicago PD. Before I talk about the new season, let’s jump into a short recap about each show…cause you know those season finales were a LONG time ago! LOL

Last time on Med, Ethan was riding along with paramedics, really just to put some distance between him and April, who told him she’d finished moving her things out and gave him back his key. But when he rushed into a convenience store where a guy was holding hostages and was then held at gunpoint himself, April learned of the news and rushed to the scene. They hugged when he was released, and it looks like maybe something could happen between them again. Back at the hospital, Will had reason to doubt Hannah’s honesty about going to a meeting when her ex, a drug addict, shows up at the hospital, needing treatment, and Hannah tells Will he called her for help. Yet Will found Hannah’s cell phone in her apartment after she’d already left for her NA meeting. She explained that the ex had called a mutual friend at the meeting, who told her. He said he believed her, but was she telling the truth or was he just being naïve? Finally, two detectives from New Orleans showed up, and it came out that Crockett was a suspect in a murder that happened there three years before. Wanting more information about Crockett, Natalie cornered an old friend of his who was visiting, and he informed her that back then, Crockett was going through a lot because he had a daughter who died from leukemia after her first birthday. After some deducing and questions, Natalie figured out that Crockett had donated bone marrow, and the actual killer was the recipient, who apparently acquired Crockett’s DNA. Who knew?

On Fire, Capp was injured while on a call (but will be okay), and Severide took it hard because it shouldn’t have happened. He did some investigating into the scrapyard where the explosion occurred and found that they had a history of shady behavior. He was able to convince OSHA that fines like they had been giving just weren’t cutting it. He found out later that the place got shut down. Meanwhile, Foster reapplied for medical school and was accepted, so Annie Ilonzeh won’t be back this season. And poor Brett learned that her (now dead) birth mother’s husband was taking his daughter (Brett’s half sister) and moving back to Rockford because Chicago was too expensive on one salary. And Kidd’s first and most promising Girls On Fire participant suddenly went MIA, and Kidd is now worried.

Finally, on PD, Atwater was really the big story. He went undercover to do a gun deal with a bunch of…well, KKK-type guys and learned once he was in there that he had to work with Doyle, one of the (racist) uniformed officers (now a detective) who’d stopped him and treated him so poorly before. The guy was also undercover. It wasn’t going to be fun for Kevin. But the guy apologized, and they ended up working well together. He convinced Kevin to have a drink with him afterward. On the drive, he kept trying to apologize, but Kevin didn’t want to talk about it. Then they saw two guys on a street corner talking, one of whom was holding a duffel bag. Doyle stopped because he said he saw a drug deal. Kevin asked why, because he’s Black? Doyle asked what was in the bag, and the kid wouldn’t answer, instead just ran into the building. Doyle followed him in, and before Kevin could follow, he heard gunshots. He found an injured Doyle before getting into a shootout himself, and Doyle later died. Intelligence found that it was being used as a stash house, although the duffel bag only contained a pair of sneakers. Trudy advised Atwater to visit Doyle’s family’s house to give his condolences, and everyone there was hailing Doyle as a hero. But when Intelligence finally arrested the shooters, they claimed Doyle shot first, and Kevin told Voight they were right, that there was no probable cause for the stop, and he wanted to say something. Voight told him he and Intelligence would back him if that was what he wanted to do. In the end, he did that, and when he arrived home, Doyle’s partner was there, just waiting and watching. Then a bunch of patrol cars went by silently, their lights on, as if to tell him they were watching him. Dun dun dun…

Between COVID and the racial unrest happening across the country, #OneChicago has its hands full. I can’t wait to see how all three shows handle it all!

On tonight’s Chicago Med, “When Did We Begin to Change,” the entire staff at Chicago Med adjusts to the new normal of the pandemic. Dr. Choi, Dr. Lanik, and April fight on the front lines. Dr. Halstead and Hannah face a troubling reality. Dr. Charles tries to clear the air with his daughter following recent developments.

Then on Chicago Fire, “Rattle Second City,” Firehouse 51 welcomes a new member to the team, whose presence could provide some complications. Brett’s leadership shines during a scary call. Boden sees great potential in Kidd and proposes an idea that could have lasting repercussions.

And finally, on Chicago PD, “Fighting Ghosts,” the team responds to the shooting of a 5-year-old girl and they must work the case while facing new obstacles that come from the heightened attention on police reform. Atwater is targeted by a group of officers who want to hurt him for standing against the blue wall. Voight questions whether he’s cut out for a new form of policing as he manages oversight from the CPD’s deputy superintendent.
