Phoebe’s Choice
I just recently discovered Stan Against Evil, in time to catch the first three weeks of the third season. Which brings us to tonight’s season finale because they drop two episodes a week! Fortunately for me I haven’t watched any of the first two seasons, so I have some episodes to go back and binge. In many ways this is a watered-down version of Ash Vs. Evil Dead, with more episodic pacing and considerably less gore, but it’s fairly funny and features John C. McGinley (Scrubs) as former Sheriff Stanley Miller. Stan is apparently destined to die at the hands of the demonic forces that haunt his tiny hometown.
Last week’s episode opened with Stan’s daughter Denise hanging out with the new Sheriff Evie, watching the satirical horror-romance TV show Vampire’s Creek, which mashes up Dawson’s Creek & the Twilight series. The show also stars a vampire played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Kickass) named Zach. On the same night the gals watched the latest episode of their fictional vampire show, a mysterious package showed up for Denise.
When she later opened the package, she learned she had won a fanfic contest for writing about the Creek and had been rewarded with a mirror that featured as a prop on the show. The mirror was cursed, though, and it pulled her into a pocket dimension in which the show is recreated. Stan noticed Denise was missing and tried to track her down. Inside the “show,†Zach tried to talk Denise into submitting to his vampire bite. The next day, the mirror called Evie in as well. She arrived in time to stop Denise from killing a hobo, but she was promptly bitten and became a vampire.
Stan went in after girls and soon suffered the same fate – but they just sort of blended in with the other vampires socializing at Vampire Creek’s prom. The guy who had a crush on Denise irl, the grave digger Kevin, also came into the mirror and got bitten. Zach told Denise that only by killing them can they go back to the real world, so she stabbed all three through the heart with a chair leg. Then she stabbed Zach and the curse was lifted. It’s a very, very silly show. But I am enjoying it, and I recommend it for you too!
On tonight’s first episode, “Intensive Scare Unit,†Stan goes for a prostate exam but must escape when the hospital turns demonic. Then on the season finale, “Stan Against Evie,†Haurus demands Stan kill Evie in return for killing Constable Eccles and ending the curse on Willard’s Mill; another demon tells Stan how to defeat Haurus, but the cost could be high.
