If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/24/16

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

thexfiles124smallOnce again proving nothing is ever truly dead, tonight, The X-Files returns to FOX for the start of 6-episode event series. For 9 seasons and 2 feature films, FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny, Aquarius) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson, Hannibal, The Fall) investigated cases involving the strange and unexplained. It’s been 7 years since these two last appeared on the big screen and almost 14 years since the original series ended. The world is a much different place these days – if Mulder and Scully had had cell phones and the Internet in those early days, their cases would have been solved a lot faster! This new series picks up in modern times, after the events of the second film, with the agents’ former boss Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi, Sons of Anarchy) trying to get the team back together.

I was a huge fan of the original The X-Files when it first started, and I always preferred the standalone monster-of-the-week episodes to the ongoing mythology. While I really wanted to enjoy tonight tonight’s premiere, I think only the most diehard fans will appreciate it. The episode is extremely focused on the alien-abduction mythology the original series was centered around. I had seen the first five seasons and the first film way back when they first aired but kind of lost touch with the series after that. Not having seen the later seasons and second film, I found myself a bit lost and confused while watching tonight’s premiere.

I think casual or new viewers could probably skip tonight’s episode, but if you do watch and find it less than stellar, fear not, as there are some great episodes ahead! The good news is that the next episodes get back to that monster-of-the-week style of story that I loved about the original series. I found the second episode (which airs tomorrow night) a lot more enjoyable than tonight’s episode. And the third episode, which airs next week, is a hilarious treat – it was written and directed by Darin Morgan, who wrote/directed some of the series’ more comedic and meta episodes.

On tonight’s premiere, “My Struggle,” Agents Mulder and Scully return after 13 years to investigate a government conspiracy at the behest of a popular web-TV-show host (Joel McHale, Community), who introduces them to a woman who claims she’s an alien abductee and shares startling news with them.

Warning, tonight’s episode airs at a special time after the football game, so be sure to pad your DVR recording! Also, check your local listings for the The X-Files: Re-Opened special, which features interviews with the cast/creators of the series.

Don’t miss the premiere at a special night and time tonight on FOX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Galavant, Worst Cooks in America, Shameless, and Billions.

Saturday on TV – 1/23/16

Saturday is the series premiere of Beowulf on Esquire at 10/9c. Based on the legendary English poem over a thousand years old, Beowulf tells the story of a disillusioned and damaged hero. The 13-episode, one hour drama will chronicle Beowulf’s return to his home Herot, to make peace with his past. Unwittingly in search of a cause to believe in and a community to fight for, Beowulf finds himself wrongly accused of murder and hunts down the true perpetrator to avenge the death of his fellow kinsmen. Beowulf becomes Herot’s tough but unconventional hero, responsible for upholding the law and protecting the town from danger. The last of a dying breed, Beowulf is a man capable of shaping the world around him by his actions and force of will. While this may seem like a familiar tale, Beowulf unearths the full story of the complicated, driven man behind the lore. The show stars Kieran Bew as Beowulf, William Hurt at Hrothgar, David Ajala as Rate, Ed Speleers as Slean, Joanne Whalley as Rheda, & Laura Donnelly as Elvina.

Tonight is also the season premiere of Black Sails on Starz at 9/8c and a new episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC at 11:29/10:29c, with host Ronda Rousey & musical guest Selena Gomez.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/22/16

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice

unforgettable2016smallI was so glad that A&E brought Unforgettable when I was sure it was going to be canceled after the last season ended. And this season has been great, even with the cast changes. I miss Eliot (Dallas Roberts) and Joanne (Jane Curtin) especially, but Alani “La La” Anthony as Delina the M.E., Kathy Najimy as Sandra the boss, and E.J. Bonilla as cutie Denny have been great additions. In the latest episode, the body of a young woman was found buried on the beach, and Carrie and Al found and arrested her killer and his accountant (or so they thought). Unfortunately, they were shot at and had to take cover from the bad guys and the coming hurricane in Precinct 51, which was closed for renovation with only an administrative assistant and a green cop (on the job literally four days) on the premises. The bad guys found them, but Denny and Jay drove through the storm to back them up, and they were able to take all the bad guys down, including the accountant…who turned out to be the actual big bad boss. I loved at the end when they met at the boardwalk and Carrie gave out shots to everyone, toasting to Al and to the others for coming to their assistance.

Tonight was supposed to be the two episodes leading up to next week’s final two of the season, but A&E decided to air four episodes tonight, which includes the season finale. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean that it’s the final episode of the SERIES, although since we haven’t heard any renewal news yet and they’re airing four episodes in one night, I have a feeling that news won’t be good. I really hope we get some resolution tonight on a few things. One, Carrie and Al. They’ve been hinting off and on all season that there’s something going on, although they’re either not exclusive or not serious or something, what with her (now ex) husband showing up a few times and their kiss. I WANT to see Carrie and Al kiss and become official, darn it! Also, I would love to get some resolution to Carrie’s sister’s murder. That story line has been a big part of her history since episode one.

On tonight’s first episode, “Game On,” when a young man turns up dead inside a popular haunted-house attraction, Carrie and Al are called in to investigate and soon find themselves in a world of high-stakes video games and hi-tech corporate espionage. Then on the second episode, “About Face,” when a hot lead turns up in a cold case of a missing surgeon, Carrie and Al find themselves on the trail of two con artists. But unmasking the truth may have explosive consequences.

On the third episode, “Bad Company,” when Captain Russo is suspected in the murder of an informant, Carrie and Al enter into a cat-and-mouse game with a crooked former cop. And finally, on the season finale, “Paranoid Android,” when a shooter on the loose triggers a flashback that doesn’t add up with Carrie’s perfect memory, the team at Major Crimes discovers that a nefarious conspiracy is at play and trained killers are among them.

Enjoy the mini-marathon and see how the season (possibly series?) ends tonight on A&E starting at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing MasterChef: Junior, American Diner Revival, Hawaii Five-0, Hell’s Kitchen, Blue Bloods, & Burgers, Brew & ‘Que.
