Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, the fifth and final season of iZombie kicks off on The CW. Last season, the secret about zombies came out, and New Seattle was born – a sectioned off part of the city that kept the zombie population separate from the humans. A woman known as Renegade was smuggling terminally ill people across the border in order to save them by turning them into zombies. When she died, Liv took over the role. As the season came to a close, this was discovered, and Chase, the CEO of Fillmore Graves, called for her public execution. The rest of the gang – Clive, Ravi, Peyton, and Major – teamed up with the remaining crew of the Underground Railroad to help save Liv. As Peyton rallied protesters via TV, Major hulked out and stormed the warehouse where Liv was being held. In the commotion, Liv killed Chase, smashing his head with an anvil.

Meanwhile, Blaine and Brother Love decided to take advantage of the execution distraction and organized their followers to break out of New Seattle to spread the zombie virus. However, soldiers were waiting for them on the other side of the wall and killed Brother Love and his devotees. Fortunately for his son, Blaine had played it safe, watching his father’s attempt at an exodus from a distance. With Chase dead, Major took over the position as head of Fillmore Graves, telling Liv that the company would no longer block the Underground Railroad and their only enemy was the US Army. He also offered Blaine and Don-E a proposition – they could be the good guys for once and help smuggle brains into New Seattle now that the government had cut off their supply.

Finally, Ravi offered Liv a brain that would turn her human again. However, she turned it down, giving it to Dale, who had just married Clive in a surprise wedding at the police precinct. So things ended on a positive note, but will this continue with everyone working on the same side for once, or will Blaine find some scheme to benefit himself? Will Ravi finally find a cure for the zombies virus before the season is over? And will Liv and Major finally get their happy ending?

On tonight’s premiere, “Thug Death,” while investigating a murder case in which there is no body or brain to eat, the only evidence Liv and Clive have to work with is a grainy video and a little bit of blood found at the crime scene; Blaine is up to his old tricks.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/18/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, CBS’s family comedy Life in Pieces finally returns for its fourth season, with a double dose of new episodes. The series follows three generations of the Short family, with each episode comprised of four (fittingly) short stories. The third season ended with a big family party and some major announcements. First, Matt and Colleen announced that they were planning to adopt a baby. Then, Jen and Greg’s young daughter revealed that her parents were also expecting another child. Meanwhile, Heather and Tim already have their hands full with their own kids – Tyler announced that he and his young bride were going to get a divorce, while Samantha accidentally asked her boyfriend to be her first in front of the entire party. And Joan and John called off their travel plans to stick around for their kids and grandkids, especially since the family is about to get even bigger.

This show is always a lot of fun – it was disappointing to see the new season pushed out so late this year, but now I’m excited for another season of craziness with this extended family. I’m curious to see how the new children will affect the stories and family dynamic this season.

On tonight’s premiere, “Jungle Push Resort Anniversary,” the Shorts arrive at their vacation resort in the Yucatan, but their accommodations aren’t what they expected; Heather is ridiculously overprotective of Sophia; Jen and Greg discover that Matt and Colleen have been duping everyone. Nat Faxon guest stars.

Then, in “Demo Nosebreath Surgery Match,” when Colleen and Matt try to impress a potential birth mother, they have a hard time competing against another couple; Jen’s pregnancy takes a toll on Greg; Heather lets John take credit for her housekeeping; Joan recovers from knee surgery. Joey King guest stars.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/16/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight I’m looking forward to checking out the new ABC comedy Bless this Mess. When his great-aunt dies and leaves him a farmhouse, Mike (Dax Shepard, Parenthood) and his wife Rio (Lake Bell, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later) decide to leave the hustle and bustle of New York City for a quieter, simpler life in Nebraska. However, when they arrive, they discover that their new home is quite the fixer-upper, and things aren’t going to be as easy and laid-back as they had hoped.

I didn’t have a screener available to check out the show ahead of time, but based on the trailer it looks like it could be really fun – a fish-out-of-water comedy with some The Money Pit thrown into the mix. The cast playing the wacky new neighbors is also great – Ed Begley Jr. (Modern Family), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), David Koechner (The Goldbergs), Lennon Parham (Playing House), and JT Neal (Lab Rats).

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” newlyweds Rio and Mike drop everything to make the move from New York to rural Nebraska in search of a simpler life, but they quickly realize that becoming farmers isn’t as easy as they had hoped.

Don’t miss this new comedy tonight on ABC at 9:30/8:30c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/11/19

Kyle’s Choice

Early this morning, Netflix launched the 8-episode first season of the new Z Nation prequel series, Black Summer. The exciting and intense series is set during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. People are just starting to turn into zombies, and the military is trying to contain things by evacuating cities and towns and then bombing them. Everyone is panicked as they discover that in this new world, those who die wake up as fast-walking, blood-thirsty monsters.

As the series opens, we focus on one small town that is being evacuated. Everyone is pushing and shoving their way to get onto a military transport to the evacuation site. Order quickly breaks down, and the military abandons the remaining people, who now find themselves under attack from the zombies. Rose’s (Jaime King, Hart of Dixie) daughter made it onto one of the evacuation trucks without her, and so she is now on a desperate mission to get to the evacuation zone at the stadium to be reunited with her daughter. She finds herself joining up with some of the other survivors to make it there on foot – army solider Spears (Justin Chu Cary, We Are Fathers), a mute named Ryan (Mustafa Alabssi), and 20-something frat guy Lance (Kelsey Flower, My Imaginary Ex-Girlfriend). Meanwhile, another group of survivors is also trying to make their way to the stadium, but they have a mini-van – driver William Velez (Sal Velez Jr., Mayans M.C.), a young Korean woman named Sun who doesn’t speak English, and scared but trusting grandmother Barbara (Gwynyth Walsh, The Man in the High Castle).

The dangers they face aren’t just the zombies but each other as well. There is little trust between strangers in this new world, and just because you have supplies or a mode of transportation now, that doesn’t mean that someone else isn’t already watching you and plotting a way to obtain your resources. Over the course of the season, these survivors will find themselves face-to-face with new dangers, and not everyone will survive. And new folks will join these groups as others leave. These ordinary folks will need to do unimaginable things they didn’t know they were capable of if they are going to make it to the stadium alive. And even if they do make it to the stadium, what awaits them there? (We already know things aren’t going to get fixed anytime soon, based on Z Nation!)

While Black Summer is a prequel to Z Nation, set in the same world of freaky, fast-walking, and adaptive zombies, this series has a very different tone. The episodes are so tense, feeling more like a horror series and without the comedic tones the original series had. My heart was pounding during much of the first half of the season. The stakes feel more real in this series – no character feels truly safe. This is the kind of show I had hoped Fear the Walking Dead would be…exploring human nature and what it resorts to as civilization starts breaking down and everyone starts to panic in the wake of a cataclysmic event.

Much of the series is filmed using steady-cam, with the camera making long flowing shots that weave around the locations and in and out of the action, making you feel like you are right there in the thick of things. The show also makes nice use of the surround sound to creep you out with zombie roars or to make you feel the boom of the roaring jets as they fly overhead. Each episode is broken down into many short scenes, each with its own title card. This is used to break up the action, allow for time jumps, or to switch the focus of which characters we are following. The episodes also run the gambit of lengths, ranging anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes.

I really enjoyed this show – I received screeners of the first 7 episodes and couldn’t help but binge all the way through once I started. Each episode flows nicely right into the next, making the episodes feel more like a long film. I look forward to seeing how the season comes to an end now that the full season has gone live on Netflix!

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/9/19

Jenny’s Choice #1

Tonight is the series premiere of The Code on CBS. Half drama, half procedural, this new legal thriller is about the active-duty Marines who are also attorneys working out of the Judge Advocate General Headquarters in Quantico. They are trained as a prosecutor, a defense lawyer, and an investigator and choose to serve their country in pursuit of military justice at home and overseas. Luke Mitchell (Blindspot, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Tomorrow People) stars as Captain John “Abe” Abraham, a driven prosecutor who comes from a family of Marines. Anna Wood (Falling Water, Deception, Reckless) plays his colleague and friend, Captain Maya Dobbins, the lead defense attorney not afraid to go up against one of her own but also a team player if the situation calls for it. Ato Essandoh (Chicago Med, Altered Carbon, Blue Bloods, Copper) plays Major Trey Ferry, Abe’s superior officer and friend. One of my favorite actresses, Dana Delaney (Hand of God, Body of Proof, Desperate Housewives) stars as commanding officer Colonel Glenn Turnbull, one of the highest-ranking female officers in the Judge Advocate Corps. She’s tough but fair and demands an excellence in herself and her staff. And finally, assisting the team is Lt. Harper Li (played by Phillipa Soo, Smash), a highly capable lawyer who is eager to take on bigger cases, and tech-savvy, efficient Warrant Officer Rami Ahmadi (played by Raffi Barsoumian, The Vampire Diaries), the Marine equivalent of a paralegal.

I’ve seen the first episode quite enjoyed it. It’s a bit too much drama for me, but I love the cast so much (Besides the ever delightful Delany, I loved Mitchell on Blindspot, Wood on Reckless, & Essandoh on Chicago Med & Blue Bloods) and the military and procedural aspects of it that I’m in for at least a few more episodes.

On tonight’s episode, “Blowed Up,” when a soldier in Afghanistan murders his commanding officer, Capt. John “Abe” Abraham and Capt. Maya Dobbins, working out of the Judge Advocate General Headquarters in Quantico, Va., are assigned to the case as prosecution and defense lawyers.
