If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/25/14

Wow… Looking ahead to the schedule this week, it’s pretty darn empty compared to the last little while! I think we can all use a break from the heavy amount of shows. In fact, I think Kyle was going to pull his hair out when we realized how many screeners for some of the summer shows as well as the first go-round of pilots started showing up! Fortunately, even though it’s a fairly light week, there’s still some good stuff on, so check out what we’re recommending tonight. 🙂

americandreambuilderssmallI’ve really loved American Dream Builders this season. It’s not a completely new concept, but there’s enough different and enough interesting personalities to make it a lot of fun to watch. I was so glad last week when Elaine was sent home. Sure, she’s been a bit better in recent weeks than she was for the first half (at least) of the series, but she was still overconfident, pompous, and rather witchy. And while I didn’t hate the red room as much as the others, I did see that it didn’t match the rest of the house at all. Find another way to work in the bold pop of color, but do it in a way that fits in with the house and the rest of the rooms, ya know? But what do I know? I’m certainly no designer. Anyway, I’m thrilled to pieces that it’s Lukas and Jay in the final two. Jay is really beginning to grow as a designer, instead of being a builder who does some design on the side, and Lukas has a great way of taking his minimalist POV and making it fit with the design and flow of the house. It should be an excellent finale, and honestly, I’ll be happy with whoever wins.

On tonight’s episode, “Beach Home,” after nine weeks and 19 renovations, the final two designers meet their final challenge. In their biggest renovation to date, they must transform two dream beach homes in Ventura, Calif. Luckily, they won’t have to go at it alone. They are reunited with a few surprise guests to help them. One designer will win the grand prize of $250,000 and be crowned as the first American Dream Builder.

See how the final renovations go and who comes out the winner tonight on the 2-hour finale on NBC at 7/6c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Iron Chef America, Cutthroat Kitchen, Salem, & Kitchen Casino.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/27/14

Well, it’s been a big weekend in the Rarden household… Our 16yo son has his learner’s permit and is now driving. It’s such a scary thought. Luckily, the hubs is teaching him, so I don’t have to be in the car. LOL While I sit home chewing on my fingernails, check out our recommendations for what to watch.

americandreambuilderssmallI’m really digging American Dream Builders. I love design shows, and I love competition shows, so combining the two is a recipe for greatness for me. Last week was unfortunate because the judges would’ve chosen the opposite team that the neighborhood council did, but because the rules state that they must choose someone to go home from the losing team that the neighborhood council didn’t choose, they had an extra tough decision to make. They did make the right decision in sending Erinn home. They loved her kitchen, but one of their least-favorite rooms out of both houses was the son’s bedroom that Erinn did. It was much too old, boring, & kind of hotel-y for a young boy.

We’re down to the final six designers. While Elaine has been…better the last couple of weeks, she’s still much too cocky and much too…witchy for me. Other than that, it’s kind of hit or miss for me. Some weeks, I like one contestant. Some weeks, I like another and hate the one I liked the week before. So it’ll be interesting to see how it continues to play out.

On tonight’s episode, “Colonial Duplex,” for the first time in the competition, the designers must renovate a single project, a colonial-style duplex. Six designers remain, and the focus for this week’s challenge is to create a “Lowe’s fantasy bathroom.” Personalities clash as the teams are reshuffled. Jay Riordan serves as site manager of Team Blue, but he struggles to lead with team member Dann Foley trying to take control. On Team Red, Lukas Machnik and Elaine Griffin find difficulty in site manager Darren Moore’s casual work style. Ultimately, one designer is sent home.

Find out who goes home tonight on NBC at 7/6c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Funniest Home Videos, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, America’s Best Cook, Believe, Catch a Contractor, Cutthroat Kitchen, The Mentalist, & Salem.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/30/14

It’s the start of another week, which means we’re in for some more great TV. I’m so excited for some of the stuff that’s on, and that includes tonight, so check out our recommendations. 🙂

americandreambuilderssmallLast week was the premiere of American Dream Builders, and it was a lot of fun. Nate, Monica, & Eddie were great as the hosts/judges, with the surprising twist that the neighborhood council got to walk through each house and help judge who the winning team was. Some of the renovations the teams made were great, but there were some definite mistakes & stupid decisions. Trying to make space for the family, and they turn the master closet into a bedroom for the two kids (a boy and a girl who were already sharing a room), while turning the old room they shared into a new den for the family? Stupid. Nate put the kibosh on that real quick by giving his opinion that it was a mistake, and the team changed their mind, giving one child the new room and the other child in the old room, which they redesigned. And then there was the whole bathroom vanity… Not only was it ugly and horribly refinished, but it wasn’t even functional! A family of that many people who all share one bathroom HAVE to have storage that the team didn’t give them. Crazy.

On tonight’s episode, “Mid-Century Modern,” two teams of designers will tackle sweeping makeovers for two mid-century Modern-style homes that are just a few doors down from one another in Palm Springs, Calif. This week the focus is on bringing a “dream home” to reality. The contestants are challenged to create a stunning “outdoor oasis” and, in the midst of things, must deal with a massive rainstorm that causes delays and frustrations. In the end, one designer from the losing team will be sent home.

See who gets sent home tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Funniest Home Videos, Food Court Wars, Believe, Chopped, Resurrection, Catch a Contractor, Crisis, Cutthroat Kitchen, & The Mentalist.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/23/14

It’s the start of another week, the first full week of spring…except the weather is still much more like winter than not, so… Regardless, there’s some great TV on this week, and tonight’s no exception. JJ’s busy with school and Megan’s dad is visiting, so Kyle & I are to give you our recommendations. 🙂

americandreambuilderssmallIt’s no secret that I love design shows and competition shows. Put them together, and it’s a recipe for a fun show! Tonight, NBC is premiering their latest, American Dream Builders. Hosted by Nate Berkus, each weekly episode features two teams who will be asked to redesign and renovate a space from the inside out, all in a matter of days. Eddie George (former Heisman Trophy Winner and NFL All-Pro from the Tennessee Titans, who has now become a renowned landscape architect) and interior design expert Monica Pedersen are joining Nate as the judges.

This has all the makings of what could be another fun design competition show, and I love Nate Berkus, so I’m looking forward to seeing how NBC puts its spin on things. Also, be sure to check out our American Dream Builders giveaway, where you can win a $50 Lowe’s gift card!

On tonight’s episode, “The Tudors,” the teams tackle two Tudor-style homes across the street from one other. Team Red (headed by Tennessee-based builder Tarrick Love) attempts to build a bathroom vanity from a repurposed work bench and create a new dining room table out of the original kitchen’s beloved hardwood floors. Team Blue (headed by Chicago builder Jay Riordan) must decide what they should do with the master bedroom. In a surprise twist for the contestants, Berkus invites a “neighborhood council” to vote on which house they feel is the best makeover. In the end, one designer from the losing team will be sent home.

Meet the teams and see who goes home tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Funniest Home Videos, Food Court Wars, Believe, Chopped, Resurrection, Catch a Contractor, Crisis, Cutthroat Kitchen, & The Mentalist.
