If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/22/12

Last week, I was away for a family vacation in warm, sunny Florida, only to return to 21 degrees and snowing in Massachusetts. While there, we played a lot of mini-golf, and I quickly learned how both fun and stressful it can be hanging out with toddlers 24/7. 🙂 Now, I could use another week off just to catch up on all of last week’s new TV shows that are piled up on my TiVos! Plus, tonight there’s another full lineup of great new episodes to add to the pile! Check out what we think you should watch!

Kyle’s Choice

I have really been enjoying Angry Boys on HBO. Chris Lilley has put together a great new crop of characters for his latest show. Identical twins Daniel and Nathan Sims were my favorite characters from Lilley’s previous series, We Can Be Heroes, so it is great to see them return in this series. The new character of their grandmother, Ruth “Gran” Sims, a guard at a juvenile detention facility, is also hilarious and a great addition to the family. However, my favorite new character has to be Jen Okazaki, the over-zealous and controlling mother of skateboarding superstar Tim, who takes the whole stage mother/manager to absurd levels. This show is is so funny—I love how completely insane and inappropriate it is! We are halfway through and get another double-bill of episodes tonight.

In tonight’s first episode, S.mouse’s disappointing community service at an elementary school creates a desire to get back in the public eye; Daniel’s mom makes him socialize with a gay classmate when she’s fed up with his homophobic slurs; Tim’s relationship with his mom sours as his 16th birthday approaches.

Then, in the second episode, Nathan’s success with girls irks Daniel to no end; Blake gets a visit from an old friend fresh out of jail, but Kareena is less than thrilled when he lends the ex-con his van; Gran gets the boys ready for Family Day at Garingal, and shares a secret with one of the inmates.

See both episodes tonight on HBO at 10/9c & 10:30/9:30c. Learn where to find episodes online of Angry Boys @ Clicker.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/1/12

Happy New Year! It’s the first day of 2012, and I don’t know about you, but I hope this year is better than 2011 was! Between job issues, school issues, and family drama, 2011 was a LONG year for my family! One thing that didn’t disappoint was all the great TV. Hopefully the new TV we get starting tonight will be as good or better. To see how the year will start out, check it out!

Jenny’s Choice

When I saw the first commercial for Food Network’s latest cooking competition, I actually squealed and bounced in my seat. I absolutely LOVE Guy Fieri, and I watch Rachael Ray all the damn time, so combine the two of them into Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off, and Jenny is a happy camper.

In this six-episode competition series, Rachael and Guy will each serve as coaches and mentors to eight multi-talented celebrities, all of whom are passionate about food and cooking. Divided into “Team Rachael” and “Team Guy,” each episode features celebrity contestants battling it out in a fun, fast-paced culinary fight-to-the-finish, with the two bottom-rated contestants from the losing team going head-to-head in a blind tasting elimination challenge. In the end, the last contestant standing is crowned king or queen of the Celebrity Cook-Off and wins $50,000 for the charity they are playing to support. Contestants include Alyssa Campanella (the current Miss USA), actors Cheech Marin and Lou Diamond Phillips, singers Aaron Carter, Coolio, Joey Fatone, and Taylor Dane, and Olympic gold medalist swimmer Summer Sanders.

I’m not sure yet who I’m rooting for, but I saw Joey Fatone and Lou Diamond Phillips on Rachael’s daytime show the other day, and they were both a lot of fun, so as of right now, they are my top two picks. Who do you think will be fun to watch? Comment below and let me know! Also, be sure and check out Iron Chef America tonight, where Iron Chef Bobby Flay pairs up with Marcela Valladolid, who appears on Food Network’s Mexican Made Easy, and Iron Chef Masuhara Morimoto is paired with Andrew Zimmern, of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods. Judges are Penn Jillette, Donatella Arpaia Stewart, and Simon Majumdar. That should be a FUN episode, too!

Check it out tonight on Food Network at 9/8c. Learn where to find episodes online of Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off @ Clicker.
