I’m enjoying the new season of S.W.A.T.. Last week was a good one… The new Lt. Lynch really fumbled the ball when she spoke signed SWAT up for an undercover operation and went to the team with it first before even speaking with Hicks. Not only that, but she talked with and gave the mayor all the details as well, which is a no-no for Hicks. Fortunately, when Chris and Street went undercover in a counterfeit money op to take down (again) a local gang, things went as good as can be expected. No one was hurt, although it looked shaky for a minute, and they were able to nab all the bad guys and get all the counterfeit money before it could be distributed. But the whole thing left a bad taste in Hicks’s and Hondo’s mouths about Lt. Lynch.

On the personal side of things, Hondo’s parents were still at odds (no surprise, really), but Hondo convinced his mom to come out to the car show for both Daryl and Hondo himself, not for his dad. She did, and I could tell it meant a lot to Daryl to have her there, since he’d worked hard helping Hondo’s dad with his car. We’re still wondering what Senior’s health issue is, since he coughed up blood a couple of episodes ago. When will we (and more importantly, Hondo) find out? Gotta be something serious, I’m guessing… As for the not-so-serious, Chris helped smooth the way for Street and Molly Hicks, even though she didn’t look entirely happy about it. She’s trying so hard to be happy with Kira and Ty, but obviously she has some feelings for Street. I want her to be happy with them. I love that odd relationship. I don’t want her with Street, simply because on this show, they won’t keep them together (I mean, look at how it went with Hondo & Jessica…). Guess we’ll see…

On tonight’s episode, “Immunity,” Deacon’s family gets caught in the crosshairs of a drug cartel when he and the SWAT team aim to bring down its leader, a former foreign rebel force leader running drugs in plain sight via a local flower market. Also, Hondo receives troubling news regarding his father, and Tan is forced to go before an internal review board due to his girlfriend’s indiscretion.

See if Deacon can protect his family tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Limetown, Chicago Med, The Goldbergs, Schooled, Chicago Fire, Guy’s Grocery Games, Nancy Drew, SEAL Team, Single Parents, & Chicago PD.

Earlier today, Amazon released all eight episodes of the new original series Modern Love from writer/director/producer John Carney (Once, Sing Street). The romantic anthology series is based on a New York Times column of the same name, with each star-studded episode telling a different romantic tale about someone finding love in New York City. However, not all of these stories are the typical boy-meets-girl type of tale. The idea of “love” varies from tale to tale. The first season’s all-star cast includes Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Dev Patel, John Slattery, Brandon Victor Dixon, Catherine Keener, Julia Garner, Andy García, Cristin Milioti, Olivia Cooke, Andrew Scott, Shea Whigham, Gary Carr, Sofia Boutella, and John Gallagher Jr.

I checked out the first two episodes and was pleasantly surprised by how incredibly well-done this series is. The first episode finds a single young woman (Cristin Milioti, How I Met Your Mother) dating under the watchful eye of her doorman, who is like a father figure to her. While the second episode finds a reporter (Catherine Keener) and a successful dating site owner (Dev Patel) each reflecting on second chances with their lost loves, but their stories take very different paths. Each episode feels fresh and different but with the same general tone that provides a nice blend of drama, romance, and humor. While each episode is only 30 minutes long, they are so densely packed and detailed that afterwards you feel like you’ve just watched a feature film. The characters are well-defined and developed, and each episode tells a complete story. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve seen of the show so far and look forward to checking out the remaining six episodes, especially given the amazing cast list!

Check it out now on Amazon!

I’ll also be watching/recording Looking for Alaska, Living with Yourself, American Housewife, Fresh Off the Boat, The Blacklist, and Van Helsing.

On last week’s episode of Superstore, Mateo’s lawyer was at Cloud 9 collecting testimonials for Mateo’s bond hearing, but most of the statements about how wild and fun he could be would probably do him more harm than good. So Amy tried to get the co-workers to embellish, making Mateo sound more kind and generous, but this also backfired. Eventually, she and Cheyenne tracked down Jeff and used an old photo to manipulate his emotions and get him to agree to making a statement about how he heard the company execs illegally ordering the ICE raid. Meanwhile, Sandra was convinced that Dina was throwing her a bachelorette party, despite the fact that she kept adamantly denying it, since it wasn’t part of her official Maid of Honor job responsibilities as defined on the internet. Jonah felt bad and enlisted Garrett’s help in throwing a party. However, once Dina found out, she was upset, accused them of trying to make her look bad, and reluctantly agreed to throw the party…but having Sandra be responsible for most of her own party. At the same time, Jerry awkwardly asked Garrett to be his Best Man, even though the two hardly knew one another. When it came time for the party, Sandra was once again overshadowed – her party had been re-purposed into a celebration of the fact that Mateo had been released on bond.

Last week, there were once again stirrings of unionization, and with Jeff preparing a statement about the ICE raid, it looks like we are gearing up for an employee mutiny this season. The show does a great job of mixing in these more serious topics while also keeping things funny. I have my doubts that Sandra will ever actually get her wedding day, but I’m hoping that something finally works out for her!

On tonight’s episode, “Forced Hire,” when Amy hires Dina’s nemesis Colleen, Dina blackmails Garrett into making Colleen’s life a living hell; Jonah is forced to befriend Marcus to unionize the warehouse guys.

See how Dina blackmails Garrett tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Young Sheldon, The Unicorn, Carol’s Second Act, Evil, Perfect Harmony, The Good Place, and Chrisley Knows Best.

Magnum P.I. returned last week, and there are still loose ends to tie up – Higgins still hasn’t given Magnum an answer about becoming a partner. Higgins did leave to go to England to see her old boss from MI6, so I’m hoping she’s just taking care of old business, because she and Magnum make a perfect team. In fact, they make a little bit too good of a team for the liking of the woman Magnum is seeing… She was not pleased with the moment that Magnum and Higgins shared before she left. I’m okay with that because I would love it if Higgins and Magnum got together as a couple. They are perfect for each other.

On tonight’s episode, “Honor Among Thieves,” an incorrigible pickpocket, Jin, asks Magnum for help when a cell phone he recently lifted receives a very suspicious text message. Also, Magnum is frustrated when Higgins still won’t give him an answer to whether or not she will become his partner, and when Rick decides to make a bold career move, T.C. comes to the rescue.

Find out if Higgins finally gives an answer tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods.

Last week, CBS kicked off the new hospital comedy Carol’s Second Act. Carol Kenney (Patricia Heaton, The Middle) was a high school science teacher, but after her marriage fell apart, she decided to change careers and become a doctor. In last week’s premiere, it was Carol’s first day as an internal medicine intern. Carol is significantly older than her fellow new interns – Daniel (Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Baby Daddy), Lexie (Sabrina Jalees, Search Party), and Caleb (Lucas Neff, Raising Hope) – and soon found herself taking on the mothering role, even though she was just as fresh and clueless as the others. She made a few mistakes her first day on the job, particularly disobeying the orders of her tough new boss, chief resident Dr. Maya Jacobs (Ito Aghayere). But for Carol, the needs of the patient always comes first, and her genuine care and concern for others shined through. On her first day, Carol also met senior attending physician Dr. Stephen Frost (Kyle MacLachlan, Twin Peaks), who is much closer to her own age, and the two really hit it off. (I wouldn’t be surprised if these two get together over the course of the series.) Carol’s adult daughter, pharmaceutical rep Jenny (Ashley Tisdale, Young and Hungry), also showed up at the hospital.

I really enjoyed last week’s premiere, and I generally don’t care for sitcoms with laugh tracks. I found the series to be quite funny, and I liked how Carol is able to apply her teaching experience to her medical work. The dynamic between Carol and the other interns is a lot of fun – I love this cast, but I am a bit concerned that Lucas Neff isn’t listed on the cast page on CBS’s website, so I hope he sticks around. I look forward to seeing more of these wacky interns as they learn to be full-fledged doctors. It’s nice to have a fun hospital comedy back on my TV lineup – it seems like it’s been a long time since we’ve had one!

On tonight’s episode, “You Give Me Fever,” when Carol treats an elderly patient whose tests are inconclusive, Carol must find a way to work around hospital policy to take extra time to observe her; Daniel is embarrassed when his fellow interns find out that he doesn’t know how to draw blood.

Catch up with Carol at work tonight on CBS at 9:30/8:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Young Sheldon, The Unicorn, Evil, Superstore, Perfect Harmony, The Good Place, Sunnyside, and Chrisley Knows Best.
