If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/3/14

It’s finally getting warmer, and pretty much all of the snow is gone here. Could it finally be…(gasp)…spring?! The mid-season TV programming is already in full swing—it seems like as soon as one show finishes, two more spring up to take its place. There is no rest for the weary for die-hard TV viewers, and to help you decide what to check out tonight, we’ve got some suggestions.

community43smallCommunity is always hit or miss for me—when it’s good, it’s really good and clever, but when it’s bad, it can be practically unwatchable, especially if it is a parody of something really obscure or just goes completely off-the-rails and crazy. The last few episodes have actually been quite entertaining. While I have never actually played Dungeons & Dragons, I was still able to enjoy the humor of last week’s episode, which found Professor Hickey reconnecting with his estranged son (guest-star David Cross) while competing in a game of D&D. The previous week’s episode also featured a fun game competition where Abed and Annie played a 1990s VCR game (starring Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan as a gold prospector) in order to determine who got to choose their new roommate.

However, even when the episodes don’t necessarily work for me, I like that this show never plays it safe and always stretches its creativity. So with the show currently on a roll (at least for me), I was really excited when I saw the ads for this week’s episode, which looks like the a parody of the 1980s G.I. Joe cartoon. I can’t wait to see where they go with this premise, but knowing the premise is only half the battle!

On tonight’s episode, “G.I. Jeff,” the study group embarks on an animated adventure inspired by “G.I. Joe.”

Check out the action tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Hollywood Game Night, Parenthood, Surviving Jack, Suits, and Sirens.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/13/14

Wow… Yesterday, it was announced that The Big Bang Theory has been picked up for another 3 seasons, so there’s a lot more of the show to look forward to! I just hope they don’t run out of ideas and maybe start moving along the Sheldon/Amy relationship a little faster! Fan or not, the first of many more new episodes airs tonight, and in addition, we’ve got some suggestions on what other shows you should check out.

kingofthenerds2smallTonight, a new nerd will sit atop the Throne of Games as the second season of King of the Nerds comes to a close. Last week, it was every nerd for him/herself. It was “gaming” week, and in the first challenge, the nerds had to race around a track in Tron-inspired go-carts. Zack somehow didn’t even have a driver’s license and failed miserably—and it was Kayla who took the win and was safe from elimination. In the Nerd Off, it was Zack versus Jack in a game of Angry Nerds, which had them shooting projectiles, trying to knock down one another’s structures. Jack just barely eked out a win, finally sending the evil Zack home.

While I thought Zack was irritating and annoying, at least he made a good villain. The person I really wanted to see go home last week was Kayla—I actually find her more annoying than Zack! Tonight, the final four becomes the final two, who will go head-to-head for the title. After last year’s disappointment with Celeste winning, it’s time for a guy to take over the throne, and I would be happy if any one of Xander, Jack, or Brian is crowned tonight.

On tonight’s episode, “One Nerd To Rule Them All,” the banished Nerds return as the final two battle for supremacy in a gauntlet of nerdy games. In the end, a new King of the Nerds will be crowned.

Find out who takes home the title and sits on the Throne of Games tonight on TBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, Parks and Recreation, Hollywood Game Night, Parenthood, Hell’s Kitchen, Chopped Canada, Suits, Sirens, Review, Portlandia, and The Red Road.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/30/14

Sadly, another of this year’s new series has been gobbled up by the Cancellation Bear—NBC has stopped production on Thursday comedy Sean Saves the World. While UK folks need to pay an annoying TV license, at least they don’t have to worry about the shows produced with that money being pulled, leaving unaired episodes! I find this practice by US networks incredibly frustrating and annoying—all shows have fans, people put their time and effort into making those episodes, and those fans should get to see them! How do shows like Betrayal and Dads get to air out their full seasons while far better shows get pulled early?! But enough of my ranting… Let’s get on to our list of shows (that are still on the air) that we suggest you check out tonight.

kingofthenerds2014smallLast week, TBS kicked off another King of the Nerds competition, with eleven new geeks from all walks of nerd-dom entering the hallowed halls of Nerdvana to duke it out to take a seat atop the Throne of Games. The season started off with captains Zachary and Chris selecting their teams. Since there was an odd number of players, Kelsey was left unselected. However, she was given the power to swap places with one of the others, and she chose Nicole. Nicole thought she was headed home, but in a twist of events, it was deemed that being kicked out by somebody who wasn’t even on a team was nerdier than not being picked at all, so she got to choose her team, and that team would be the winner. She chose for Kelsey to head to the losing team. In the Nerd-off, Kelsey and Chris competed in a fantasy trivia competition called “Nerdditch,” which ultimately sent Kelsey home. I can’t say I was sad to see Kelsey go—I found her pretty annoying…especially her constant speaking in other languages. I’m not sure who I’m rooting for yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing what other fun, nerdy competitions await these contestants.

On tonight’s episode, “Weird…Science?,” the nerds’ knowledge of science is tested. Appearing: Bill Nye, Mayim Bialik, and Blake Marggraff.

Find out which nerd goes home tonight on TBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Community, Parks and Recreation, and Rake.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/9/14

I took yesterday off from this column because my power went out from 6pm (Tues) until 2am (Wed)—I know exactly when it was restored, as I was awakened by every light in the house turning on and the sounds of electronics whirring back to life! Ironically, my pick for yesterday was going to be the midseason premiere of Revolution! But now the power is back on (knock on wood), and I’m ready for tonight’s packed primetime schedule! Check out our suggestions as to what you should be watching this evening.

spoilsofbabylonsmallTonight, IFC kicks off The Spoils of Babylon, a parody of those epic dramatic TV mini-series of the 70s and 80s, with a double-episode premiere. Author Eric Jonrosh wrote, directed, and financed the original 22-hour adaptation of his best-selling novel, and now, decades later, he has edited that down into tonight’s epic television mini-series that chronicles the relationships and lives of multiple generations of the Morehouse family through war and the oil business.

I remember watching those “event television” programs all the time growing up, so I’m really looking forward to seeing this comedic take on the genre—I love how they’ve even given the mini-series this whole fictitious backstory. Also, it has such an amazing cast, including Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig, Tim Robbins, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Sheen, and Will Ferrell!

On tonight’s first episode, “The Foundling,” an entrepreneur hopes to strike it rich in the oil fields, while his adopted son begins an affair with his daughter. Then, in “The War Within,” when war breaks out, Devon decides to enlist, leaving behind a distraught Cynthia, who learns that there might be another woman in the picture.

See this fantantic cast in a fun new mini-series tonight on IFC at 10/9c & 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, The Assets, Community, Parks and Recreation, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, and Parenthood.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/2/14

Did you have a good Christmas & New Year’s? Mine was really great, although I’m looking forward to my kiddo coming home on Saturday night! You might have noticed that the site went down Tuesday. We were hacked by some group from Turkey… Fun stuff. Not sure how they got in, but my husband worked till two in the morning to get it back up, and we’ve tightened up security even further, so hopefully we won’t have another problem. On a better note, there’s lots of great TV on tonight after the winter break. Now that temperatures have fallen again here, I’m looking forward to curling up under a blanket and watching new episodes of some fun shows. So check out our recommendations! 🙂

elementary12smallThe last few episodes of Elementary have been kind of sad… Sherlock had to go in front of the judge guy so the police commissioner could figure out if he should stay on as a consultant—and this was all prompted by the fact that Det. Bell was shot after Sherlock had antagonized a suspect to the point that he pulled a gun. In the end, it was Det. Bell’s words to the commissioner that kept Sherlock on the job…even though Bell isn’t feeling great toward Sherlock. I hope Bell gets full use of his hand back soon and doesn’t end up leaving the show. I’ll be very disappointed and sad if that happens.

On tonight’s episode, “The Diabolical Kind,” Holmes and Watson come face to face with Moriarty when their one-time adversary is brought in as a consultant on a kidnapping case. Meanwhile, Detective Bell continues his struggle on the road to recovery. Natalie Dormer guest stars.

See how Sherlock and Joan react to seeing Moriarty again tonight on CBS at 10:01/9:01c.
