If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/12/14

I’m thankful it’s Thursday… My in-laws are coming tomorrow, which is nice. I got lucky and really love my husband’s parents, so visits are always good. But that means tonight, in between watching the great TV, I’ll be helping clean the place up. *laugh* To take my mind off THAT part of the visit, here’s what we’re recommending for tonight.

Jenny’s Choice

lastcomicstanding2014smallI have to say that I was wary of the new season of Last Comic Standing for several reasons. One, it had been so long since the show was last on, and I hadn’t loved it as much then as in its beginning. And two, while I loved her sitcom, I’m not a huge fan of Roseanne. Her laugh is pretty grating, and I wasn’t sure how well she’d do as a judge. But honestly, the judges (Russell Peters and Keenan Ivory Wayans in addition to Roseanne) have been great. There’s been a lot of constructive criticism and not just platitudes (which is always good to see, especially since American Idol especially has gotten to be nothing but platitudes, IMO), and they’ve been funny without taking over from the auditioning comics. We’ve heard some incredibly funny jokes already, and I can’t wait to hear more.

On tonight’s episode, “Semi Final Day 1,” in the first of two semi-final episodes, the top comics who made it through the invitationals are mentored by Wanda Sykes and Amy Shumer (Inside Amy Schumer) before performing in front of their largest audience yet.

See how the comics do and who goes home tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Hell’s Kitchen, Hollywood Game Night, Chopped Canada, & Undateable.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/22/14

I am really enjoying this temporary lull in the TV season as fall shows wind down and just before the summer shows start up—I actually have a chance to clear up my TiVo backlog and catch up on some movies! But as the networks move to year-round programming, this lull is getting shorter and shorter, and tonight, we’ve got handful of series/season premieres. In addition to those we are going to mention below, I’d like to point out that tonight, The CW is also premiering a 2-night miniseries, Labyrinth, which aired a couple of years ago in Canada and some other countries. Here’s what else we recommend you check out tonight…

Kyle’s Choice

gangrelated522smallTonight, the new action-drama Gang Related joins FOX’s primetime lineup. The series follows the elite Los Angeles Gang Task Force as they try to take down the gangs that are corrupting the city. The task force is led by Sam Chapel (Terry O’Quinn), who is unaware that one of his team members, Detective Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), had sworn allegiance to the leader of the Latino gang Los Angelicos as a child. Lopez finds himself trying to balance his two worlds—attempting to do what is right, while also feeding information to Javier Acosta (Cliff Curtis), the gang’s leader. The cast also includes RZA, Rey Gallegos, Jay Hernandez, Sung Kang, Inbar Lavi, and Shantel VanSanten.

I thought this was an interesting premise, turning the usual undercover cop idea on its head. I’m interested to see how the story moves forward, how Lopez manages to keep his double-life a secret, and if we will see him choose one loyalty over the other.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Ryan teams up with a street-savvy veteran cop after his partner is killed by a well-known hoodlum.

See how the story begins tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Bad Teacher, Hollywood Game Night, & Labyrinth.

Our Thoughts on the FOX 2013-14 Pilot Trailers

Megan, Kyle, & I have been giving our opinions on the trailers for the new fall shows. You can check out the ones we’ve already posted: ABC, CBS, & NBC. Now, we’re here to give you our opinions on the FOX shows, starting with the dramas.

Almost Human

  • Jenny: I am already in love with J.J. Abrams’ new show. It’s a cop show mixed with sci-fi, and although the lead is definitely flawed, it doesn’t look like he’s a bad guy, really. So I absolutely can’t wait to watch the pilot. (In fact, I’m getting ready to watch it not long after I type this up. 😉 ) – Excited.
  • Megan: I am pretty interested in this one. It reminds me of the Will Smith movie, I, Robot. There are going to be a lot of hurdles to make this series worth watching, but if anyone can do it, J.J. Abrams can. – Excited.
  • Kyle: I would normally really enjoy this type of film, but not I’m sure if this will be that interesting as a weekly series. The whole robot that looks completely human seems like a bit of a cop-out to make it easier to produce. – Curious.

TV News – 9/10/2013

usandthemsmallLife is always so busy, but when I get a moment, there’s no where else I’d rather be than here, updating you on TV news. (Okay, maybe I’d rather be in Hawaii with Alex O’Loughlin, but this is definitely a close second). Let’s take a peek at what’s happening.

FOX has picked up five new comedies for the 2013-2014 season, a couple of which I am quite excited about. Jason Ritter (Parenthood) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) are teaming up in Us and Them (formerly known as Friends and Family). The romantic comedy is based on the British series, Gavin and Stacey. This could be the next big hit comedy for FOX, because the two of these actors are brilliant apart, but together, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
