From Silver Screens to Small Ones: Is the Film to TV Series Still King?

When a film hits the big screen, there is always a TV producer looking on with interest. They will be analysing about whether there is the potential for a successful TV spin-off that will gain high ratings, often off the back of the successful film or film franchise.

It is surprising how many television shows start out in life as a movie and then later are adapted for television. Some of the better-known examples include Shaft, which was a successful film of 1971 that was later adapted for TV and produced a number of TV movies that ran on the new CBS channel in America. In all, there were seven Shaft episodes shown on TV during 1973 and 1974.

Another successful crossover was that of the movie Stargate, which hit the big screens in 1994 and had star names like Kurt Russell and James Spader playing the key roles. This was then adapted for TV in the form of the series Stargate SG-1, which hit television screens in 1997 and ran for 214 episodes. It was the longest-running sci-fi series on TV until it was surpassed by Smallville in 2011, which itself was adapted from the Superman movie franchise.

This theme has continued and will likely carry on for the foreseeable future. Even the BBC are producing series such as Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch that originally were films adapted from the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The TV series has been one of the BBC’s flagship programmes over the last few years and has already produced four series each containing three episodes. At its peak, the show had around 11.6 million views per episode and has received a number of accolades.

So where can the next big TV hit come from? There is a lot of potential and certainly plenty of different themes and genres that can still be explored and adapted from the current stock of successful movies.

limitless426smallTonight, the first season of Limitless comes to an end on CBS. It had been a month since the FBI had arrested Sands, but some of his friends (who Brian dubbed “The Legion of Whom”) still had Piper locked away somewhere. Brian no longer had access to the immunity shot, so the FBI was no longer giving him NZT pills, which meant he was now living back home with his parents and working at an electronics store. Rebecca discovered the word “Apocryphon” on some old notes and requested Brian’s help on figuring out who or what it was. Meanwhile, NZT had started to flood the streets of New York, so Brian found a black-market source and used the pill to help Rebecca and the DEA track down the source of the drugs, or so they thought. DEA Agent Brewster had the FBI round up a bunch of powerful people and former agents who had supposedly been involved with Sands. However, it turned out that this was all a setup by Brewster, who broke Sands out of jail and set an explosion to kill those he had just set up – who turned out to be Morra’s people and not Sands’.

What is Sands planning, and can Rebecca and her team stop him? Can they find a way to prevent NZT from becoming a national epidemic? Will Brian find Piper and/or a cure for the NZT side effects before it’s too late? It should be a fun and exciting finale, and I sure hope CBS announces a second season pickup soon!

On tonight’s episode, “Finale: Part Two!!,” season 1 concludes with Brian dealing with a stunning betrayal as he and the FBI race to stop an NZT-enabled Sands and his associates from orchestrating an international incident of evil. Meanwhile, Brian also experiences devastating side effects when his NZT immunity begins to wear off.

To see if they can stop Sands, tune in to CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Fresh Off the Boat, The Real O’Neals, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., New Girl, Grandfathered, The Flash, and Containment.

limitless922smallPremiere week continues, and another drama that I’m definitely checking out is CBS’s Limitless. I haven’t seen the movie this is based on, but I’ve heard good things. Brian Finch (Jake McDorman, Manhattan Love Story, Greek) discovers NZT, a drug which boosts brain power by a huge percentage, giving the user extraordinary cognitive abilities. He is found out by FBI Special Agent Rebecca Harris (Jennifer Carpenter, Dexter) and is coerced into helping the FBI solve some of their most complex cases. Working with them is Special Agent Boyle (Hill Harper, CSI: NY), and their boss at the FBI is Nasreen “Naz” Pouran (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Grimm, Hostages). Brian also has a secret relationship with Senator Edward Mora (Bradley Cooper, Alias and the Limitless movie), who is a presidential hopeful and regular user of NZT himself.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Brian Finch’s life takes an extraordinary turn when he uses a mysterious drug, NZT, that allows him to access his full brain capacity. However, when an NZT-related murder lands Brian on the FBI’s radar, he uses the drug in an attempt to stay ahead of the authorities long enough to clear his name.

Check out this new fast-paced drama tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing NCIS, The Muppets, NCIS: NOLA, Chopped, & Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris.
