My first pick tonight is the new single-camera comedy on ABC, Single Parents. Looking at the premise, I assumed that it would be one of those shows that I liked but that critics didn’t, but from almost everything I’ve read so far on TV sites/blogs, critics are really enjoying it. And I have to say that I’ve seen the pilot as well and I loved it too.

The show focuses on a group of single parents all raising their kids (mainly 7-year-olds) as…well…single parents. They’re sarcastic, funny, and don’t hesitate to say out loud what so many of us parents want to say but don’t. Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond among others) especially has a dry sense of humor and seems to have few boundaries – such as saying kids are the perfect size to wash cars as his twin daughters are outside washing his car. When the small group of single parents meets a new father/daughter (Will & Sophie) at school, they quickly learn he’s a single father as well, but there’s one big difference: Will has fully immersed himself into single parenthood. His life revolves around his daughter and nothing else, including who he himself is as a man. The group decides it’s up to them to bring him out of the parenting vortex and remind him he’s allowed to have a life while still being a loving and attentive father to his daughter.

The cast is great. Besides Brad Garrett, who is always exceptionally funny in everything he does, it includes “parents” Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Taran Killam (Saturday Night Live), Kimrie Lewis, & Jake Choi, as well as kids Marlow Barkley, Tyler Wladis, Devin Trey Campbell, & twins Mia and Ella Allan. (And a baby who plays Jake Choi’s character’s infant son. Choi is brilliant as a new dad. So funny.)

I urge you to give this one a chance. It’s really quite amusing!

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Will Cooper has been so focused on raising his daughter, Sophie, he’s lost sight of who he is as a man and has headed deep into the parental vortex. When the other single parents – Angie, Douglas, Poppy, and Jake – at his daughter’s school see just how far down the rabbit hole of PTA, parenting and princesses Will has gone, they band together to get him out in the world and make him realize that being a great parent doesn’t mean sacrificing everything about your own identity.

Check out the new fun tonight on ABC at 9:31/8:31c.

My pick tonight is one of the new shows I’m most looking forward to this season, for multiple reasons: FBI on CBS. First, it’s a procedural(ish?) drama on CBS, and you guys know how much I love me some procedurals on CBS. Second, it stars Missy Peregrym (from two of my all-time favorite shows, Rookie Blue & Reaper), Jeremy Sisto (who I love and think is adorable), and Sela Ward (who I’ve loved since Sisters, Once and Again, & CSI: NY). And third, it comes from Dick Wolf, who is the creative force behind all the Law & Order shows, etc. With all that combined, how could I go wrong?!

Missy P stars as Maggie Bell, an FBI Special Agent in the New York office. Her partner is Special Agent Omar Adom “OA” Zidan, a West Point graduate who spent two years undercover for the DEA before being recruited by the FBI. Sela Ward plays Special Agent in Charge Dana Mosier, and the rest of the team includes Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine (Sisto), and Kristen Chazel, a brilliant analyst recruited straight out of college.

I’ve seen the pilot and really enjoyed it. Missy P definitely didn’t let me down in her first major role since Rookie Blue. I enjoyed the case as well as the chemistry between all the players, so I’m definitely looking forward to more!

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” after a bomb explosion devastates a residential apartment building, Special Agents Maggie Bell and Omar Adom “OA” Zidan of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigate a possible war between rival gangs – that is, until their prime suspects are discovered brutally murdered.

Find out who planted the bomb tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing NCIS, Chopped, Lethal Weapon (Maybe? I quit watching last season, but with the new partner, I may tune back in at first to give it another chance…), Carter, NCIS: New Orleans, Sweet Home Sextuplets, & Mr Inbetween.

I loved whenever I got to see reruns of Magnum P.I. – Tom Selleck was such a hottie! (Still is, frankly! The man’s aged well.) So when I heard they were making a reboot of the series, I was so excited. In case you don’t know anything about the show, here’s the short of it: Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez, The Expanse, Six Degrees) is a private investigator in Oahu, Hawaii. Okay, here’s the longer version: Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. Juliet Higgins (who was male in the original series) is a beautiful, strong disavowed MI:6 agent who is the “majordomo” of the property and whose second job is to keep Magnum in line. Magnum’s friends and fellow POW survivors are Theodore “TC” Calvin, who runs a helicopter tour business, and Orville “Rick” Wright (Zachary Knighton, Happy Endings, Flash Forward), the most connected man on the island.

I’ve seen tonight pilot, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s got a very similar vibe to Hawaii Five-0, especially given the setting – and they ARE in the same “universe,” so we’ll get several crossovers, beginning with tonight’s premiere. It’s just a small one, but it’s there. If you’re a fan of Hawaii Five-0, you’ll know it when you see it! If you liked Scorpion and some of the crazy rescues they had to do, you’ll enjoy this show, so give it a chance!

On tonight’s episode, “I Saw the Sun Rise,” Jay Hernandez stars as Thomas Magnum in a modern take on the classic series about a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator in Hawaii.

Meet the 2018 version of Thomas Magnum tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Big Bang Theory, 9-1-1, Halloween Baking Championship, & Whose Line Is It Anyway?.

I love shows on HGTV, especially the competition shows. NBC has a new competition show that starts tonight, and while Making It isn’t exactly like the shows on HGTV, it’s a lot of fun. Eight craftspeople from across the country come together to compete in one-of-a-kind challenges – a “Faster Craft” shorter challenge and a “Master Craft” longer one – in order to avoid elimination and eventually be crowned “Master Maker.” Amy Poehler & Nick Offerman are the hosts, while Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom-Johnson and Barney’s Creative Ambassador Simon Doonan serve as judges.

I didn’t watch Parks and Recreation, but Amy Poehler is always funny when I see her in other things and usually with Tina Fey. But she and Nick are really good friends in real life and Nick is a woodworker and craftsman himself – a really good one, apparently. I’ve seen a handful of episodes of Making It, and they are both funny, and their chemistry and friendship is undeniable. It makes for a very fun show!

On tonight’s episode, “Meet Your Makers,” the eight craftspeople participate in a “Secret Beast” faster craft and a “Modern Heirloom” master craft challenge.

Check out this fun new show tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Got Talent & Chopped.

It has been a very slow summer for television, so I haven’t been around much, but I thought I’d drop in this week to give a couple recommendations. For today I would like to draw your attention to World of Dance and the amazing talent that we have been seeing so far. The judges are incredibly knowledgeable, and I love the chemistry between them. Last season I wasn’t sure if I liked Derek, but after a while he grew on me, and now he’s probably my favorite. I’m glad the qualifying rounds are coming to an end because the battle rounds are the most intense part of the show in my opinion.

Tonight in the final round of “The Qualifiers,” the world’s most elite dance acts from all ages and dance genres enter the World of Dance arena to face off in the challenge of a lifetime. The acts have one chance to showcase their artistry, precision, and athleticism in order to move forward in the competition and ultimately win a grand prize of $1 million.

To see how many more dancers will make it through to the next round, tune in to NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching The Amazing Race Canada, Beat Shazam, and America’s Got Talent.
