If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/7/12

Wow, what a really light night of TV tonight, especially for scripted shows! Most of the networks are either airing reruns or some sort of reality shows. But it’s just the calm before next week’s new TV storm of season and series premieres and finales. So if you’re not watching the Olympics, tonight’s a great night to work on emptying that DVR for fall! Or if you’re looking for something new to watch, here’s our suggestions.

Kyle’s Choice

We are down to the final 5 contestants on The Glee Project. Last week, the theme was Romanticality. (Is that even a word?!) The six contestants paired themselves into couples for the homework task—Shanna and Michael, Aylin and Lily, and Blake and Ali. Guest judge Darren Criss wasn’t impressed by the girls’ full-on make-out and instead chose Blake and Ali as the top team, with Blake being the winner. This was the first time Blake had won something and the first time Shanna had received any negative feedback (which she blamed on her partner and perennial bottom three, Michael). For the video shoot, Blake chose to keep Ali as his partner, but Lily was paired with Michael, and Aylin was paired with Shanna. Shanna and Aylin hardly connected romantically and seemed to just be having fun dancing, while Blake failed to harmonize, making them the bottom three. In the end, Shanna wasn’t called back.

I think Shanna’s downfall was that she was never in the bottom three, and this was the first time she had to sing for Ryan. While she sang great, she had no connection with Ryan, whereas the others had sung for him so many times that he had more of a sense of their personalities. While it’s interesting seeing this Glee casting process, there are a couple things that bug me with the way this show is run. First, Ryan Murphy seems to be more concerned with finding a pre-packaged character than finding a talented singer/dancer/actor. This past week, I even heard the phrase “this isn’t a talent competition”—that’s exactly what this is! And if they are really looking for characters, I don’t understand why the two guys are still in the competition—there is nothing unique about them. Also, why does it need to be only one person who gets a part on Glee? In the first season, they gave four of the contestants roles. I would be perfectly fine seeing as many of these contestants as they want get roles—I had no problems with the “cop-out” ending to the first season.

In tonight’s episode, “Actability,” acting ability is appraised in a test that includes a performance of the Pink song “Perfect.”
